I’m a little bit late with this month’s list, but it’s been hard staying interested in some of the stale series out there. And as poor as this season was, I don’t see a whole lotta hope for next season; if anything January/February’s premieres look worse. Anyone have any suggestions on what new stuff to watch until Spring? At this point, I am seriously considering blogging the Ikkitousen sequel just for giggles…
Top Five This Month:
Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru: Great open-ended finish that kept things reasonably light, but gave just enough resolution to make the series seem worthwhile. Sad to see it go, but Mizuho, Maria, and Takako all gave strong performances. Also, we finally learned the secret behind Mizuho’s fake breasts.
CODE Geass: OH NOES, feel the melodrama! I felt like I was watching Men in Black after Shirley got her memory partially erased. I’m willing to bet the process is reversible, though. The Geass on Geass action reminded me of Sharingan on Sharingan. I am 90% certain now that Lelouch must kill his best friend Suzaku, in order to unlock the Mangekyo Geass.
Sumomomo Momomo: Still chugging along as usual, and watching all those girls who wanted to be Koushi’s bodyguard reminded me of the story of all the animals trying to win a place in the zodiac. Think of how many anime series would have been changed if Turtle had somehow placed!
Rozen Maiden: Overture: I’m really not much of a Suigin Tou fan, so this latest offering of Rozen Maiden didn’t really do much for me. Also, I kinda like Jun and where the story is going, so I wasn’t that interested in getting all this flashback. However, I laughed when that bizatch Sousei Seki stuck it to Suigin Tou’s belly, because I am a bad person. Was she aiming for the belly… or the spine?!
Soukou no Strain: Hell, might as well have stuck Sedi in an orange mecha the moment he started getting close to Sara. Ender agreed that Sedi was toast from the beginning. Oh wait, did I say Sedi? I meant Carrisford. The Sara-Lotti unholy alliance for revenge is rather silly, and Emily was so much better when she rarely spoke.
Rising:
Hana Yori Dango 2: The intense engrish was almost too much for me to handle in the beginning of episode 1. And yet, from the stereotyping of African-Americans to the heroics of Rui (who is so delightfully cheesy in any fight scene), I couldn’t have been more pleased. Only bad parts were how over-the-top Tsukushi was and having to see Tsukasa’s mom trying to be all slinky.
Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: I can’t help but worry about the fact that this series is based on a series of Playstation games, and yet the first episode was so entertaining. I hope I’m proven wrong and this ends up being some hardcore zombie action ownage.
Falling:
Strike Witches: Unbelievably, this was actually worse than I anticipated, but at least the artwork was pretty nice. I swear these series are made just so that there is a basis for pretty wallpapers, calendars, and figurines.
