Kabitzin’s January 2007 List

I’m a little bit late with this month’s list, but it’s been hard staying interested in some of the stale series out there. And as poor as this season was, I don’t see a whole lotta hope for next season; if anything January/February’s premieres look worse. Anyone have any suggestions on what new stuff to watch until Spring? At this point, I am seriously considering blogging the Ikkitousen sequel just for giggles…

Top Five This Month:

  1. Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru: Great open-ended finish that kept things reasonably light, but gave just enough resolution to make the series seem worthwhile. Sad to see it go, but Mizuho, Maria, and Takako all gave strong performances. Also, we finally learned the secret behind Mizuho’s fake breasts.
  2. CODE Geass: OH NOES, feel the melodrama! I felt like I was watching Men in Black after Shirley got her memory partially erased. I’m willing to bet the process is reversible, though. The Geass on Geass action reminded me of Sharingan on Sharingan. I am 90% certain now that Lelouch must kill his best friend Suzaku, in order to unlock the Mangekyo Geass.
  3. Sumomomo Momomo: Still chugging along as usual, and watching all those girls who wanted to be Koushi’s bodyguard reminded me of the story of all the animals trying to win a place in the zodiac. Think of how many anime series would have been changed if Turtle had somehow placed!
  4. Rozen Maiden: Overture: I’m really not much of a Suigin Tou fan, so this latest offering of Rozen Maiden didn’t really do much for me. Also, I kinda like Jun and where the story is going, so I wasn’t that interested in getting all this flashback. However, I laughed when that bizatch Sousei Seki stuck it to Suigin Tou’s belly, because I am a bad person. Was she aiming for the belly… or the spine?!
  5. Soukou no Strain: Hell, might as well have stuck Sedi in an orange mecha the moment he started getting close to Sara. Ender agreed that Sedi was toast from the beginning. Oh wait, did I say Sedi? I meant Carrisford. The Sara-Lotti unholy alliance for revenge is rather silly, and Emily was so much better when she rarely spoke.

Rising:

  • Hana Yori Dango 2: The intense engrish was almost too much for me to handle in the beginning of episode 1. And yet, from the stereotyping of African-Americans to the heroics of Rui (who is so delightfully cheesy in any fight scene), I couldn’t have been more pleased. Only bad parts were how over-the-top Tsukushi was and having to see Tsukasa’s mom trying to be all slinky.
  • Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: I can’t help but worry about the fact that this series is based on a series of Playstation games, and yet the first episode was so entertaining. I hope I’m proven wrong and this ends up being some hardcore zombie action ownage.

Only got two recommendations for this season.

    1) Nodame Cantible
    2) Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight

    Cheers.

Of all the shows you mentioned, only “Ghost Hunt” along with “Asatte no Houkou” are worth a watch. Otherwise, I agree that this season (and, in my opinion, the previous one as well) was rather weak, so I resorted to watching older shows which I hadn’t seen so far.

Death Note started interesting but I got rather tired of it, I don’t think I’m going to catch up with this one.

Was “Negima?!” this or last season? I just watched it recently and this was pretty good because it was like watching Pani Poni Negima, albeit it didn’t quite beat PPD.

The winter season has been a big “meh” for me as I’m only watching three of the new shows airing. Deltora Quest, Nodame Cantabile and Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou and even then I don’t know if I’ll keep watching them (Except for Nodame Cantabile, no way that’s going to fail me!)

I didn’t enjoy the Rozen Maiden OVA that much either for pretty much the same reasons. In fact it surprised me a little bit because I had pictured Suigintou’s past as something really tragic and that she would be more of a victim. Instead it turns out she’s actually pretty annoying and, you know, obsessive.. The way she just snapped on Shinku who had not done anything wrong just disgusted me. I mean here I’ve been having some kind of misplaced pity for Suigintou for the whole duration of the first and second season of the show!

Skane: I’m sure Ender will enjoy those series, but I’ve found that I am not a huge slice-of-life fan; at least not for my regular blogging schedule.

Chris: I got burned too badly on the last Negima and didn’t really have any desire to watch fillers that looked like PPD. As for Death Note, I felt the exact same way about reading the manga, and couldn’t fathom watching the anime after knowing most of the plot twists.

Matte: Yeah I can see myself starting some of the new season, and then quickly dumping it if something better comes along. I’m all around very not-excited about the series waiting in the wings.

    What a bunch of nonsense….

Even after Suigintou showed Shinku her Rosa Mystica, Shinku refused to accept her as a Rozen Maiden. That’s like telling a disabled person that she doesn’t qualify as a human being, and should just accept a life as someone’s little pet. If you don’t think that’s wrong, I don’t know what to say except that I have zero respect for you.

I’m not saying that it’s all Shinku’s fault, but to say that she did nothing wrong is utterly ridiculous.

You know, all this bitching between the Shinku/Suigintou camps is like a quaint reflection of the rivalry between the dolls. :P

    “It’s not her fault!”
    “Is to!”
    “Is not!”
    “Is to!”
    “Is not!”
    Etc…

    Cheers.

I’ve watched the first episode of the new Ikkitousen series. The best part was the ending animation. If the whole show was animated that way, you could watch just for the eye candy – albeit the tits are ridiculously overdone. It wasn’t as bad as I expected – I’ve never seen the first series – but if you don’t listen to music or some audio book whilst watching teh hawt f3m4l0rz, you might get somewhat bored. I don’t assume it’s really meant for anything but mas.. eh meditation, is it?
