I was reading Darkshaunz’s truly epic post about Evangelion today, and it really brought back some great memories. In my starting days as a fan of anime, Evangelion just absolutely blew my mind, and I eagerly bought into all the obscure references and symbolism. I’ve since become a much calmer anime fan, but in those days I was drawing fanart, writing fanfics (ZOMG!!!), buying all the CDs, memorizing the lyrics to the OP, playing that NGE computer board game, and joining mailing lists (WTF?!?!?!). I mean, to all the haters whining about how overhyped The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If you want to talk hyped, you need to reference NGE.
When I first heard about the remakes, I wasn’t that excited, since the hype machine had been churning for so long and I’ve since become such a jaded anime fan. However, reading Darkshaunz’s very fair analysis of the series brought back some strong feelings I thought I’d left behind. Of course the potential for snarky commentary is also immeasurable…
So I can’t wait to see what happens with this reported 2007 remake. Evangelion’s base story is really a strong one that can be spun any number of ways, so how will a few years of analysis and a great budget affect this latest iteration? If you’ve got a lot of time and you felt strongly about Neon Genesis Evangelion, you really owe it to yourself to read Darkshaunz’s post.
Edit: Apparently, Google is a hater. I tried to look up information about the remake, and got this page. The message told me that only spyware and virus applications look up information about Evangelion =(.
