That’s quite a mouthful, for sure. It’s also my latest addiction! For those who have never heard of the game or its predecessors, the Versus series of Gundam games are quite possiblly the only good ones in the franchise, and feature arcade style battles. The latest entry, RvZ II, is the best rendition of anime-style mech battling I’ve seen thus far. The feeling of extreme mobility and effortless boosting is captured extremely well, and the point system actually makes playing grunt mechs worthwhile. The promo video is on YouTube, as are countless gameplay videos. Apparently the game is pretty popular in the eastern Asia arcade circuits!!
Just recently I was able to get my hands on the PS2 port, which adds several more playable mechs that the arcade version doesn’t have, along with a story-driven “Plus” mode. I must say, there’s nothing quite like kicking Stellar’s dog in person or giving Shinn a well deserved thrashing. Hearing his emo death cry never gets old!
A couple thoughts on the game:
Though I’m far from being a real pro at the game, I’m currently having loads of fun abusing Strike Noir’s dual pistols. That mech is seriously overpowered for its point cost, methinks. Not to mention it looks sweet as hell.
I’d like to see someone beat arcade mode using only the super wimpy mobile armors. I imagine it could be done, but would take a painfully long time….
What I really want to know is how I can get Meer’s dancing Pink Zaku. I hear it is playable in the PS2 version?
Anyone else play this game?
Edit: I finally unlocked Stargazer! Unfortunately, I find it a bit hard to use, since its main weapon is a remote detonated nuclear bomb that tends to disintegrate my AI teammate more often than the enemy. It’s like using the Redeemer in Unreal Tournament when friendly fire is on. The omnidirectional melee attack is neat, but the range seems to be extremely limited. I know that Stargazer isn’t meant to be an uber combat mech, but since it’s the last unlockable Gundam, I was expecting something at least halfway decent. Am I missing something here?
Also, I started monkeying around the early PLUS mode stages. I really wish I could understand all the dialogue! So far, I think I’m working my way through Shinn/Luna/Rey’s noobie training days when they had to use super crappy Zakus. I imagine the Armory One incident (from Destiny episode 1) will be coming up in a bit. There’s quite a bit of original voice acting, which is a nice plus (har har).
