Shallow Thoughts

I’ve heard all the hype and squeals over the Kanon remake, and some even suggest that Kanon is one of those GOAT-type series. However, for the life of me I can’t seem to get past the art style. Even with Kyoto Animation doing the animation, I don’t feel any desire sit through any scenes with these characters. I felt the exact same thing with Air.

However, lately I have been slightly intrigued by Kanon. Something about the constant “sad girl in snow” comments has perked my interest. Is “sad girl in snow” really that sad/good?

    Ditto on the art style.

I actually never even thought of the “sad girl in snow” meme until Kanon 2006 came out. I’ve lived in California my whole life and only see snow when I’m shooting down it on my snowboard with a huge grin on my face. Now, “sad girl in rain” is more appealing to me, but maybe that’s because snow is associated with happy memories and thoughts.

I didn’t like the chara designs for AIR either.. but I don’t mind these Kanon ones for some reason.. guess it grows on you like cancer.

Dunno about the current one, but the old one didn’t have any sad girls in snow. I would not abandon it if it did. It may be a question of the frame of mind.

Well, I think the art style from the second picture would be much worse than this.

Well, if you are referring to Kanon’s storyline, it is very bittersweet. Most are betting that KyoAni will mainly follow the Ayu-path, but it is still up in the air on whether they will go for a more tragic ending, or a happier ending.

The name ‘Piro’ in MegaTokyo was named after a character in Kanon( we have already seen this character, but the character has not been properly introduced yet), and the meme ‘Sad Girl in Snow’, while popularised by MegaTokyo, was inspired by Kanon.

I don’t have the rant on hand, but Fred( the artist behind MegaTokyo) himself stated that Kanon influenced him a lot.

So yes, ‘Sad Girl in Snow’ is sad. Not ‘Graveyard of the Fireflies’ sad, but still sad.

    Cheers.

Kanon tastes like a “nothingburger with cheese” to me. Tried it a couple of times… I was bored to death, to be honest. Not even the artwork (which is level “A”) gets any grip on me. This show (and it’s a high quality show) is not for me.

    Just my 0.02 € (^_^;)

Well, you obviously don’t know the original – good for you ;)
About the “sad girls” part – back in the days of the _first_ Kanon, I’ll only say this much: When KimiNozo broke, the anime it was compared with most was Kanon. Not because of the setup, but because of the emotional impact in the show’s end.

Without wanting to ruin the story by spoiling, let me say this much: Kanon is a collection of short stories about the 5 main girls which are loosely intertwined with each other. It’s not like they’d be sad and moping all the time – the opposite in fact, they’re usually pretty lively – but in the ends of their respective stories, have some hankys ready. The gloves will come off, and it will hurt. I couldn’t finish the Toei version with dry eyes, and I feel that in the KyoAni version, it will be even worse.

So, if you’re a sucker for drama, stick with the show. Otherwise, jump off.

Errrrggg, so conflicted! Although I don’t like boring shows and the melodrama of Megatokyo is too much for me sometimes, I am a sucker for drama in general. And I did love KimiNozo… I might have to give Kanon a chance =__=.

Well… KGNE was happy for 2 episodes and was a 13-eppy( IIRC). I predict Kanon2006( 24-eppy) will be happy for 4-5 episodes before they enter the meat of the dramas. For your drama-fix in the early episodes, pay close attention to the flashbacks and dreams. There are a lot of visual clues in them.

    Cheers.

After reading Mentar’s post, I’ll give Kanon another (last) try this evening with the first three eps….
After all, I definitely AM a sucker for drama … ^_^

*high fives everyone who can’t stand the character designs*

Personally I’m all for drama, but when it’s based around a bunch of freaks that look like their faces got cut off about half way down, well, that’s where I draw the line. I mean anime takes liberty with proportions on a regular basis, but Kanon (and Air) just take it too far IMO.
