Utawarerumono 21

Kuuya is such a naive emperor, and while Genjimaru is out and about, her advisors Hien and Hauenkua keep suggesting she unite all the lands under her rule. Hien is idealistic, and Hauenkua just wants to pwn n00bs, but eventually Kuuya relents. Her misguided rage at being attacked (as everyone fears her power) leads her to declare war on everyone. Kuuya’s forces easily plow through all the creep countries, and even the Onkami Yamukai fall. Too bad Dii (who mutters something about “Koroaika”) returns from the dead to interrupt Oruyankuru’s sweet On Riyaaku gravity spell, because Oruyankuru was this close to destroying all of Kuuya’s hero units with one spell.

Hakuoro is not happy about this development, especially since he just had a heart-to-heart with Kuuya. Touka and Kurou kite the Kunnekamun forces from the eastern border, and Hakuoro and the civilians evacuate. Hakuoro and Benawi wisely decide to abandon the capitol while Benawi and the girls (and Oboro) will buy Hakuoro time to escape.

Awesome episode! I am starting to warm up to the Avu Kamuu since they just seem to be strong, tough, melee units without any laser beams on their head. I like how Kuuya and Hakuoro have been pitted against each other, but Kuuya is so dumb like Oboro that I cannot fathom Hakuoro losing. However, the intrigue that has Hauenkua (probably) coercing other countries to attack Kunnekamun to force Kuuya to retaliate is truly delicious.

It’s impressive how far Hakuoro has come based on a basic understanding of tactics. OK, the Kunnekamun have about 10 Avu Kamuu units, and they are very strong and nearly invincible. However, they are slow as hell, and there are not that many of them. Also, they can be immobilized. Kite those suckers around and use some fast units to raze the Kunnekamun resources! Attack their mines or something! Tie up their legs! C’mon even Ewoks can do this kinda stuff.

I was hoping that they would do something “tactical” in the further episodes. But alas, as with all other anime, the only way to defeat the endgame enemies is to unleash your “ultimate power…”

Three guesses, and the first two don’t count.

Well, to be fair. They did try more conventional methods to combat the Avu Kamuu, but the technology difference was just too great.

Yes… I am well aware of the similar difference between the Ewoks and the Empire. Hakuoro himself was doing just fine until an unaccounted for element appeared, then things just got messy.

    Cheers.

Many people are badmouthing these last episodes of Utawarerumono because the presence of mechas, but so far i’m liking a lot. :)
Hakuoro and his powerful harem just defeated everybody else, even an army 10x the size of them! There’s no way they could lose to a pack of bunnies, unless they had something like the equivalent of gigantic tanks. So that’s okay to me.

And anyway, that’s not the first time we see mechas appearing in the last episodes of in a would-be fantasy series… someone remember MAGIC KNIGHTS RAYEARTH?

My curiosity in MKR just rose, because in the irony of it, I thought MKR WAS a mecha-based series.

I was wondering how Hakuoro would fare against the Starcraft races. He would probably get the Protoss to join his side thanks to his massive charisma. The only problem is how he can win against innumerable Zerg who don’t care about the sanctity of life and who are too stupid to retreat.

Wouldn’t that describe the Kuccha Keccha forces? They even employ the hit and run tactics of the Zerg( burrow).

I can’t seriously believe that nobody in the three largest countries on the planet managed any kills against the things. Pits and burning oil weren’t exactly unknown in medieval warfare, and Kuuya’s piloting team seems to have below-average intelligence even for mech jockeys.

Hien: WE CAN CONQUER EVERYBODY WITHOUT GENOCIDE, LOL
    Hauenkua: LOL, EVERYBODY DIE, LOL

You seem to have a point, there–

A minor spoiler: by ep. 24 it seems that the scrub units of the world figured out how they could kill one of those things.
