Louise Francoise le Bran de la Valiel wakes up and prepares for her first day as a second year student at the Tristein School of Magic. However, the year starts off badly, as Chevreuse the Clay invites Louise to try her hand at some simple alchemy, and Louise blows up the entire classroom. None of the other students are the least bit surprised. It seems that although Louise is the 3rd daughter in the famed Valiel family, she is nicknamed Louise the Zero, because she has had zero successful spells thus far, and she has yet to earn a true second name. While Kirche Ziperstone, the Ardent summons a sweet salamander at the Holy Ceremonial Familiar Summoning, Louise ends up getting a commoner: Hiraga Saito. Louise is deeply embarrassed, and even has to pactio-kiss her new familiar to seal the deal. However, teacher Mr. Colbert notices something rather odd about the runes that are etched onto Saito’s hand…
Later that night, Saito has a “silence” spell cast on him, but Louise messes up and ends up casting a translation spell on him. Now that Saito no longer has to wait for fansubs of Tristein anime, he wants to escape home and download some raws. Unfortunately, Guiche D. Gramon, the Bronze catches him, and as Saito stares at the two moons, he is forced to concede that this is not a dream.
I didn’t have super-high expectations going into it, but now I’m totally pumped about this series. I’m sure the plot will end up being rather flimsy, but the characters all seem really lovable, if slightly cliche. I especially dig Louise, and I really felt bad for her when she was being laughed at by her classmates; damnit, one day she’ll be Hokage, you sniveling bastards!
While Tabitha did her best Yuki (of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) impression, and Guiche tried to be like Tamaki (of Ouran Host Club), I was struck by what playas the nobles are. On the one hand we have Principal Osman smoking and fondling his secretary (why was Ms. Longueville wearing a G-string anyway?), and on the other hand we have Kirche dating every male in the school. Speaking of hands, why is Louise upset about summoning a shounen-series swordsman? Shounen-series swordsmen always start out fairly weak, but possess three important advantages over most creatures: 1) they have opposable thumbs, 2) they power up like crazy as the series progresses, and 3) they never ever die. You know in 10 episodes, Kirche is going to be staring at her gimped salamander that does 0 damage to fire-resistant foes and wishing she had summoned Kurosawa Ichigo. And then there’s that blushing boy with the fugly bug-bear…
