Random Thoughts on Hunter X Hunter

So I was cleaning out the closet and getting rid of a bunch of anime CDs that I never watch anymore when I came across my beloved bundle of Hunter X Hunter episodes. Next thing y’know, it’s marathon time and my eyes are burning. Ahhh, I’m amazed at how well this series holds up even today; I’d probably rate it as my favorite shounen fighting series. The fight scenes are still as creative and dynamic as ever, and don’t suffer from the scene reuse or cheap still frames found in most modern fighting series. I suppose the same could be said could be said about many older series, but that’s a whole ‘nother Jeff Lawson-esque journey into nostalgia.

A couple odds and ends I thought about while watching:

1. I never realized that Killua was watching X-rated channels at the cheap hotel in New York.

2. So, just who are the strongest characters? Supposedly Jin is up there, but where do Silva, Zeno, Kuroro, and Hisoka fit in? Hisoka never seems to get a chance to really use more than a fraction of his powers. I always wondered what would happen if he didn’t calm himself when those odd bodily contortions began. And he was fairly low key in Greed Island.

3. Gon’s fight against Hisoka in the Celestial Tower still gets me on the edge of my seat.

4. The mafia elite nen-users (Injyuu) were an extreme let-down in terms of character design. I swear, they were conceived during a hangover. Especially that little lumpy marshmallow man in the running outfit. I was fairly disappointed that the fight between the remanents of the Ryodan and the Injyuu (after the Ryodan car was miniaturized) was left to the imagination.

5. Nobunaga’s predicament in the Ryodan car illustrates why nobody wants to sit bitch-in-the-middle.

6. I never noticed before how goofy the 200th floor desk attendant was in the Celestial Tower. Her efforts to convince Gon and Killua of the tower’s greatness were quite amusing.

7. I suppose it was inevitable, but this was up for auction on Hong Kong eBay. I wonder what the battery is for…

You’re a cool dude, Ender. You’re cool because you like Hunter x Hunter.

Yep, HxH happens to be my favorite shounen series as well (with One Piece and DragonBall close behind). It’s barely even about the fighting, either. Togashi had some many unique and interesting ideas thrown into the series and it added so much to it. Nen is probably the most interesting type of power I’ve seen in shounen anime. It’s so complex and can be used in many different ways. It made for some great moments. I still get shivers during Gon’s fight with Hisoka in the Celestial Tower arc. When he hands him the number plate…that’s just so great! I could go on and on about Hunter x Hunter. York Shin is one of the best arcs ever! I really wish that the anime could continue. The nGL arc gets a lot of flack from fans but the more the story moves along, the more I like it and some pretty messed up stuff happens in it. And, of course, it has the typical Togashi touch on it. Everything is just so imaginative. It’s a shame he’s having problems with whatever illness he has. He keeps holding up the manga because of it (though I wish him well in his health before anything else). Hopefully when the arc is done, Nippon Animation will produce another OVA to cover it. They’ve done a damn good job with the anime adaptation.

The Nen system definitely adds a lot of complexity and depth to the fighting system, allowing for lots of imaginative tricks and strategies that fit within a logical framework. I too hope that Togashi recovers from cancer or whatever he has. Kabitzin told me that his wife (creator of Sailor Moon) may take over if he bites the dust. Noooooooes!

The York Shin arc was intense, but it was so much darker than the first half of the series. In some ways I liked the lighter-hearted exploratory feel of the Hunter Exam episodes, along with all the unique quandaries the hunters had to adapt to. Once they got into the real world, it was all blood and guts, which was definitely a shocking change of pace. I’m still mixed about Greed Island - it had the feeling of the early episodes, but the episodes weren’t nearly as focused or well paced. Here’s hoping that Gon eventually finds his deadbeat dad!

Well, the Wiki says it’s a rumor that Naoko Takeuchi has laughed off, so who knows.

More random things to note about HxH:

The 4 main characters (Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leo) are rip-offs of YuYu Hakusho’s 4 main characters (Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara, respectively). Clearly Togashi is an environmentalist.

That’s it. I need to go and read through the manga again.

The battery is there for size comparison.

Hisoka, Kuroro etc are weak shit.

The strongest guy is the President of the Hunter’s Association, and he’s twice as power as the 2nd and 3rd ranked hunters, even though he claims he lost more than half his power due to old age.

Do you read the manga? The battles are getting even more technical, it’s Deathnote STYLE!

  7. Ender (422)
    Posted 7/3/2006 at 12:07 pm | Permalink

So the Prez is top dog, huh? Which makes me wonder - how old is he? Wing told Gon that nen users age slower, and seeing how Bisuke is super old and doesn’t look her age (even in fugly mode), the decrepit-looking president must be positively ancient.

Speaking of which, I wonder about how Bisuke ranks in terms of skill. She is always screwing around or trying to be cute, so it’s hard to tell. And what about Wing, who was trained by the president? It’s a fairly common cliche to have those laid-back easygoing shirt-untucked guys harbor insane powers.

deathnote style ? with such poor graphics ? i bet even i could make better draw then this .
but…but…the author is sick…so…we all forgive him .
but i want him to Fu’n end the Chimeras ant arc ! >_<

  9. Ender (422)
    Posted 7/3/2006 at 5:56 pm | Permalink

Oh man, I read a bit of the Chimera Ant arc, and the art is sooo rough. That must be some serious illness! It almost looks like the author was just doodling. The story is a bit iffy as well, but I did get a kick out of the dark humor:

    SCENE 1:
**Little boy and girl are walking in the woods. Giant chimera ant pops out.
    Girl: “Onii-chan, I’m scared!”
Boy: “Don’t worry, onii chan will protect you with his life–arghhhhh!!”
Chimera Ant: MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH. “Yum yum, that was tasty!”

    THE END.

It’s like a romantic comedy gone wrong. The number of brother-lovin’ girls has just decreased by one, Stripey.

Hunter x Hunter is really a great series. I had the chance to watch the TV series and first OVA when it aired on Animax here and just love it. The Spiders arc was great, but the Celestial Tower arc is probably my favorite. The fights are awesome and I really enjoy this ‘master teaching new abilities’ stuff. I’ll probably watch the third OVA soon. I took I look at it, the drawing seens a bit strange, but I guess it’ll work fine.
There is word that the manga will be released soon around here, I’m looking foward to it. The art may be poor at many times but the story will probably keep me going.
I really didn’t expect to see a post on Hunter x Hunter anywhere anytime soon, what a good surprise.

Mayor HxH fan over here :). Bummed about the fact that I didn’t hear from HxH for over 2 years now. Some sites noted that a new ova would have been launged by august 2005. But it’s almost a year after and still nothing has been publish or aired.

So I wondered if any of you guys knew what is going on. What is keeping the anime? I miss HxH, Naruto and Bleach keep me bussy now a days, but they can’t compare to HxH.

If this blog is still being used and recent… Let me know, I really really want to know what happens to Gon, Killua and Bisuke (she is mighty strong). Although I didn’t like the Yoyo idea on Killua bit lame if you ask me. Liked the elec. thingy better.

    Cheers

I just watched the tv-series, and the three OVA’s in the course of two weeks *grins* I reallly really like Hunter x Hunter, especially the light bits, although the character development in the dark bits are awesome!

I wonder if they will continue it, since after the final song of the last episode of Greed Island Final Gon and Killua stand before a fishing figure that’s probably Ging. That could be the end… Although there are so many loose ends!

What will happen with Kurapica and his search for the eyes of his comrades? Especially when he realises his nen on Kuroro has been released. (Hisoka did find and pursuade the person who was able to do that on greed island)

Who will win in the fight between Hisoka and Kuroro when that happens? (I hope Hisoka, I think he’s more interesting, especially after he cooperated with Gon and Killua on Greed Island)

Why did Killua’s sister join the spiders? (She was the one replacing Hisoka, right?)

What kind of type of nen user is Leorio and how will he use nen for medicinal purposes? (at least, it’s my guess he will do that, being a doctor by then and all)

Will Killua ever really be tempted to betray Gon? Or why else did his father make him swear to never betray his friends?

What will Gon want to do after he finally met his dad? (Maybe there will be some character development for him too :P)

Oh, and a question/inconsistency. Wing said he was trained by the president of the Hunter oorginization, right? But Bisku said she was his trainer. Although I could answer my own question: I guess he could have had two trainers, like Gon and Killue now have had two.

Anyway, I’m glad to find such a recent “random-thought” thingy about this series, as it definatly ranks high in my favourite anime list at the moment!

    (Let’s make this a conversation!)

Dungar: I think the yoyo idea for Killua is not so bad. Especially in combination with the electricity thing :) it’s a pretty damaging combination!

I’m also curious about what’s going to happen next and when a new OVA is coming. But I guess I know even less then you, since I’m such a recent fan. (I only heard about and watched the first episode about a month ago :P)

Tamara, you might want to check out the scanslations of the Hunter x hunter manga (Stoptazmo link on front page). The story after Greed Island isn’t as good as the previous arcs though. You do, however, get to see Killua’s little brother (yes, it’s a boy, not a girl) in action with the Spiders at one point.

  17. Tamara (4)
    Posted 8/7/2006 at 4:27 pm | Permalink

Really, it’s a boy? I always get those confused in anime. I kept thinking Kurapica would turn out to be a girl at any moment in the series as well. And I can’t think of Senritsu (sp?) (the one with the good hearing) as a man either.

Anyway, I’ll check out the scanlations, as soon as I find the link ^^ Although it’s a bit of a shame if the story isn’t as good as before anymore… Is the writer/artist really sick?

  18. Tamara (4)
    Posted 8/8/2006 at 1:37 am | Permalink

    Okay, I found the link, but do you from which zip-file (chapter?) the story continues after the anime? I downloaded the first file with a date behind it, but that one starts with two characters I don’t even know (or recognise). So I’m guessing that’s the wrong one ^^;

i think it was around the 180’s chapters, though I’m not too certain. It took a bit of hunting before I found the right one.

Great to see a crowd of HxH fans here. I introduced HxH to my best friend and she enjoyed it all thoroughly. Just finished watching last episode of GI Final with her. I would like to get more info on the manga as well.

    Random thoughts:

In one episode, think it was the ep where Gon and Killua were listening to Gins nen recorded tape, and it shows Gin sitting on top of a birds head (indian style) and that bird sitting on top of an even larger bird. I cant help but wonder what location that was.

Also, about the gentleman in the first episode of HxH, who saved little Gon and reveals his last mission is to find Gin, I cant help wondering how strong he is a if he ever finds Gin. Bet he was on Whale Island looking for important clues eh?

This is an amazing anime. Hope the manga reveals more, if not now, then in the future of some of our questions…

    Posted 8/22/2006 at 12:25 am | Permalink

    >>I cant help but wonder what location that was.

Notice that in the shot after that, Gon looks up and sees the silhouette of a giant flying creature high in the sky, thus implying that Gin was right above him at the time!

As for the man in the beginning, he plays a major role in the chimera ant arc of the manga. Go read it and find out!

Woo-hoo! HxH fans! I’m a new fan myself, having just discovered it about two months ago (I followed Kurapika’s seiyuu from Prince of Tennis) but let me just say that I am absolutely and completely hooked! I agree that Togashi ripped off certain character designs from his previous work, YYH, but when you really think about it, nothing’s simple. They’re similar in some ways but still very different. Just wanted to say that. I do hope Togashi get’s well (Bless him!) I really want to know how all this ends.

Hi, very nice, to be here, there’s a lot of Hunter X Hunter Fanatic in this site, my comments on this animae series absolutely awesome their is a slight confuse with the story line, or maybe major error’s in the script, as one example for Wing is trained by Chairman, and then the GI episode was Besuke, but still, rare and quality of HXH in comparison to other animae, for me HXH is the most best of all, a one of a kind, in graphic design, interpretation of the story, *****very amusing*****, for more HXH, a rare Animae which combine a complete deal of package, Hoping for your fast recovery Togashi…

I just finished watching the entire series…wow. That is all I can say is “wow”. I loved it, Hisoka is definitely my favorite character, and I am now looking for the Chimera Arch…I just need to know what chapter it starts on…There was also another inconstancy…when they were with Battera, they gave him the memory card with Jin’s data on it. But how did they get the card with Jin’s data if Killua’s brother had it? Did they get it back and I just not notice? But anyway, yeah…I am definitely recommending this to my friends…They are skeptical right now, but I am gonna show them 1-16 (That is what I have been told is the number of episodes one would take to start to like it). I found it hilarious how Killua spent all of his Celestial Tower earnings on malted-milk balls… But at the very last scene of GI Final, something bothered me… Show ▼

    So yeah….

Yeah~! HxH is one of the best! In fact, it’s in my best 3 anime. It’s better than Naruto, which is overrated IMO….

The York Shin arc was so intense, loved that moment. What I really love from HxH is the high level of creativity…..really….many things were unexpected, such as Pakunoda’s good side and Killua’s night vision. I felt rather sad watching the ending of OVA 1. Anybody?

LMFAO. HxH characters ripped off of Togashi’s previous YYH? It’d be safe to say that the art style is similar (seeing as how it is the SAME mangaka), but-a… personality-wise, I think that HxH’s fantasmic four is vastly different from YYH’s bombastic four. If one were to compare the two, YYH is more mature… dark… even grim in a sense, seeing as how YYH B4 are near adulthood, while HxH F4 are more innocent in their perspective on adventure (at least in terms of Killua and Gon)… in any case, both shows are fanf*ckingtastic. Here’s to Togashi’s recovery (though its an interesting thought that his wife might complete HxH in the event of his croaking) but hopefully it won’t come to that. I need him around for my shounen fix… nobody does it like Togashi… XD
