So I was cleaning out the closet and getting rid of a bunch of anime CDs that I never watch anymore when I came across my beloved bundle of Hunter X Hunter episodes. Next thing y’know, it’s marathon time and my eyes are burning. Ahhh, I’m amazed at how well this series holds up even today; I’d probably rate it as my favorite shounen fighting series. The fight scenes are still as creative and dynamic as ever, and don’t suffer from the scene reuse or cheap still frames found in most modern fighting series. I suppose the same could be said could be said about many older series, but that’s a whole ‘nother Jeff Lawson-esque journey into nostalgia.
A couple odds and ends I thought about while watching:
1. I never realized that Killua was watching X-rated channels at the cheap hotel in New York.
2. So, just who are the strongest characters? Supposedly Jin is up there, but where do Silva, Zeno, Kuroro, and Hisoka fit in? Hisoka never seems to get a chance to really use more than a fraction of his powers. I always wondered what would happen if he didn’t calm himself when those odd bodily contortions began. And he was fairly low key in Greed Island.
3. Gon’s fight against Hisoka in the Celestial Tower still gets me on the edge of my seat.
4. The mafia elite nen-users (Injyuu) were an extreme let-down in terms of character design. I swear, they were conceived during a hangover. Especially that little lumpy marshmallow man in the running outfit. I was fairly disappointed that the fight between the remanents of the Ryodan and the Injyuu (after the Ryodan car was miniaturized) was left to the imagination.
5. Nobunaga’s predicament in the Ryodan car illustrates why nobody wants to sit bitch-in-the-middle.
6. I never noticed before how goofy the 200th floor desk attendant was in the Celestial Tower. Her efforts to convince Gon and Killua of the tower’s greatness were quite amusing.
7. I suppose it was inevitable, but this was up for auction on Hong Kong eBay. I wonder what the battery is for…
