Next month I’m making a commitment to try all those odd series that have been accumulating on my hard drive. Except for Ergo Proxy, which I plan to marathon once it finishes. Saiunkoku looks fairly ripe for examination, as does The Third.
Top Five This Month:
Jyu Oh Sei (Planet of the Beast King): I’ve been reading a lot of quality Sci-Fi lately, and this has amped my craving for some SF anime. Jyu Oh Sei mini-marathon to the rescue! I’m still amazed at how Jyu Oh Sei manages to pack as much story into 10 episodes (thus far) as other series do in 50. One nitpick though – I wish the “young years” arc was longer, as I would have liked to learn more about the world through little Thor’s eyes. Still not convinced that it only takes 2 years to grow from twerp to bishounen.
Utawarerumono: Woo, finally getting around to discovering who Hakuoro really is! The addition of trenchcoat samurai Touka is also a big plus. Kind of bummed that it didn’t win the 4k fanart poll, though.
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi: Learned that Haruhi is at her scariest when she is being abnormally nice.
Black Jack: Less flash, more substance. The combination of old-school sensibilities with modern animation makes this series a joy to behold.
Nana: Though Kabitzin tells me the series is headed towards the boreder, I’m still hooked at this point – perhaps because I haven’t spoiled myself with the live-action movie.
Questionable:
Simoun: Kabitzin is trying to convince me that yuri + CD repair kits is actually a winning combination. Will look into it next month.
Falling:
Ray the Animation: I thought that getting into the main arc would make this show even better, but sadly enough the plot is draggin and the production values have plummeted faster than a dying patient’s pulse.
Already at the Bottom:
Strawberry Panic: Quite a few other bloggers were enjoying this, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. Turns out it didn’t hurt at all, since I was deep in slumber after a few episodes. I guess the moe factor isn’t enough to keep me interested.
