The Bittersweet Taste of Life

ZOMG, just saw this HORRIBLE candy based on the candy that the dead sister in Grave of the Fireflies loved so much. My mind is boggled!

Speaking of mind-boggling, check out this video of sweet engrish rebuttals. “Don’t make fun of me!”

Anyway, just stay safe out there, and watch out for those thieving Americans.

I swear, nothing is sacred to Japan any more.

I say we go over there and kick some scrawny Japanese ass.

It’s high time those Japanese people needed to get some morals pounded into their heads.

Omg, I’d be terrified if I went to Japan and someone came up to me and said a whole Engrish sentence paired up with aerobics! >_<

It is at times like this that I feel very, very much sane. Normal even.

I knew that there were those canned candy things, but I didn’t think they would go and use Grave of the Fireflies as an advertising tool. That’s just mean.

I would totally do the same thing. This coming from someone who would sell canned human meat if she could, as well as soy sauce with human.

I’ve had that candy, pre… Setsuko packaging. Um, it’s actually pretty good, given its type of candy (I mean, there are only so many variations you can make on the jolly-rancher like sugar crystal).

I met a guy once who said he had watched and disliked Grave of the Fireflies. I was considerably shocked – I mean, it’s GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES – so I asked why.

Guy: I don’t like children. They’re annoying.. so it was just a relief when they died.

Well, at least the candy’s good.

That’s the most distasteful thing I’ve seen in a long time. Think it would top the list of what NOT to take to an anime screening to try and make new friends. “Want some japanese candy?” *Screams*. Especially the joint screening of ‘Grave Of The Fireflies’, that UCL (University College London) are hosting later this year!

Giggles, at the videos. They don’t cover the important scenario: “Squirrels stole my mobile phone!”

If I were to get robbed, the last thing I would want to do is break out into aerobics and spout English.

Hilarious as it may be, that’s grammartically-correct English.

Hell, at least Disney has a wee bit of credibility for doing what they do(They haev a stake in teh porn industry OMG). Walt was one sick sick man. I blame his past failures for warpinng his mind. The Great War, too.

Gandalf, thanks I thought I’m the only one who thought so. It’s certainly a bit morbid if you think about it but after all it’s a cute design. People often get politically correct about stuff that doesn’t concern them. For example, if you haven’t bought the DVD but rather watched a free fansub, then please don’t complain about anyone “ripping it off”. I’d think they’re even paying license fees so the makers of the anime gave their OK and get payment for it.

I think Ahnuld was a consultant for Zuikin Gals, good grief what self resepecting Ameican would use a pcoket knife to rob people with rags over their heads too. My frigging multi tool has three knives that are bigger, where’s the 9mm?

As for the Candy wow…I wonder who the genius that came up with that campaign. I generally feel Japan should have conceded after the disasters at Leyte Gulf, and most certianly after LeMay stopped pulling punches. Operation Starvation should have been an indication that it was quitting time, just goes to show how people who only give a damn about their own personal safety can never be free, the poor bastards.

I wonder whether I’m the only one who is slowly getting pissed by two guys who always talk about guns and violence in almost every anime blog I come across.

fyi this type of candy existed way way BEFORE they made grave of fireflies. So it’s no different from say….an anime character drinking coca cola as it is eating this candy.

The candy predates the movie by about 80 years. It is classic and that is the only reason why it appeared in the story/ life of the writer. The story of the film is based on a true story and the cans of these candies would often be reused to hold other things, so the thing about the ashes is reasonable and believable.
I do find it disturbing, but maybe the candy company didn’t watch the movie before making this decision.

NOTE: Traditionally the tin would be brightly colored, but the GOTFF edition has a big black line across the middle, perhaps to indicate mourning?
