So I was reading some of the articles in the WP Dashboard Feed (you know, the sucky ones that cause the Dashboard to take about 5 minutes to load), and I came across a great article about some general tips for successful blogging. I understand that this may be excruciatingly boring to some, so the rest of the post comes after the jump!
Now if you’re like me (or Jason), then you love you some juicy blogging tippery. However, while Jason offers some more specific suggestions to leveling up your blog, Kent’s article covers some more general tips:
1) Know Your Topics and Add Original Content
For the anime blogging community, this is pretty much a given. There are two major components to most anime blog posts, and those are summary and opinion. Both are equally valid forms of content, and it’s up to the author to find what mix works best for him/her.
2) Don’t Be too Narrow or too Broad
This one also tends to apply more to non-anime blogs, but I do prefer to read anime blogs that focus mostly on anime and less on the personal lives of the author(s).
3) Don’t Act Like a Rock Star, Because You Aren’t
I’ve mentioned it before, but I dream of one day overhearing some strangers talk about Sea Slugs! without realizing I am one of the authors. Ender and I have tried seeding such discussions in various MMORPGs, but never with any success! But, as much as my ego consumes me, I do try to be accessible and friendly. All 3 of us know we’re just a small part of what makes the anime blogging community so much fun, and that there is no reason to act high and mighty. Of course the day my dream comes true, all bets are off and mighty Kabitzin will start referring to himself in the third person!
4) Lead Me to Other Good Places; Be an Equal Opportunity Linker
I gotta admit, I’m probably not as good about this as I should be… Linking and commenting are the lifeblood of a blog, because while content is king, it’s the discussion that fuels the fire to provide content. Since getting involved with Sea Slugs!, I’ve definitely found some truly wonderful sites, and today’s little site might be tomorrow’s hub of anime awesomeness.
5) Be a Person, Not a Website
I like this tip the most. Many of my favorite authors have a very distinct style, and it’s this style that drives me to read a post right after I’ve watched an episode or a series. It would be a fun experiment to take 10 snippets of various posts and see who could identify the author of each post. Obviously, some would probably be easier than others (for instance if the post had bold red text with the word kawaii in it, you’d probably be able to guess who wrote that post). I like to think that if you read my posts often enough, then you know me pretty well as a person, too. Believe it or not, I really do use puns in regular conversation…

I really wouldn’t mind if you destroyed your furniture or post articles whilst being drunk. This could even be considered as
