Kabitzin’s February 2006 List

I’ve been taking it pretty easy again this month, and haven’t even gotten into the backlog as I had planned. Blame it on World of Warcraft and Battlefield 2.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Binchou-tan: This is such a bittersweet series! I can’t even handle the roller coaster of emotions I have when I watch this show, as I laugh at Binchou-tan’s misfortunes and then feel horrible pangs of guilt afterwards. I mean, if they displayed on the bottom of every episode a URL or phone number you could call to help Binchou-tan… wouldn’t you feel bad about not calling/surfing over?
  2. Fate/Stay Night: In spite of the mad slow pacing and complete lack of Saber-time, I’ve really been enjoying myself. The characters are being built up nicely, and each of them really seems to have a mysterious past and several layers of motivation. This is also one of those types of shows that lends itself to lots of parody and good-natured ribbing.
  3. Shakugan no Shana: Do you apply to be a Flame Haze Helper through a temp agency? How does this work? It seems like pretty good work if you can get it.
  4. Gun X Sword: Jason’s comments about this make me laugh (Shinn/Mai contortions are always good for a cheap laugh). I really need to get back to blogging Gun X Sword, as it’s been kicking up with the last few episodes. Every time I see Clawed Man, I want to dip him into a vat of moisturizer…
  5. Mai Otome: Eh, why not. It’s been a weak month, so Mai Otome sneaks in despite even reusing the Natsuki hitchhiking joke. If they would just start making blatant references to last season (a la Jubei-chan 2), I wouldn’t have such a problem with this series.

Rising:

  • Ergo Proxy: The pedigree, the art, the production quality… I’m pretty excited about this one. They certainly set a high standard with the first episode.

Falling:

  • Patience with Emiya Shirou: Or should I call him by his real name… Emiya MIAKA!!! *dun dun dun* Oops, forgot the spoiler tag.

Trap:

  • Magikano: Ender and several other bloggers seem to be admitting that they enjoy this harem fluff. I watched the first episode and was not terribly impressed, although the character designs were ok. Is this worth pursuing?

If you expect anything from Magikano you probably won’t be able to enjoy it. I only grabbed the two first episodes because of a certain screenshot even though I had condemned it before. Well it’s not really great but the lack of concurrency gives it a boost. Hmm, dunno maybe your karma level is too low for this show.

No, sir. Kashimashi is the only trap that’s currently airing.

Expecting something from Magikano is like expecting Bush to admit that there’s actually not WMD’s in Iraq in the first place.

Really, to enjoy Magikano, just shut down your brain and watch. It’s not taking itself seriously, so why should we ;).

I’m almost sure he could even show you the receipt. I guess it’s just more useful selling them further than actually using them.

Every episode in Magikano is absolutely ridiculous, with totally illogical plot devices (“everyone put these swimsuits on!”), but it’s fun if you don’t feel like thinking.

Kabitzin, it’s simple. Watch it like a Bond movie. You know what will happen. You know how the end will be. You know it’s not going to have brilliant ideas, you just turn off your brain and enjoy the explosions and pretty girls.

Magikano is just the same. Don’t expect deep stories. What you get are pretty girls and 12 chuckles and 3 laughs on average, per episode. Which is just what I need after some hard work, or if I just wanna relax.

Ahhh… Mai-Otome. Gawd, I wanna like it, but I’m no more than lukewarm on it.I’m crossing fingers. And if they don’t start to

    a) explain WTF is goin’ on

    b) show bouncy bouncy – [Copyright (C) Anime on My Mind]

    I’m gonna sue Sunrise… o_O

For the rest…I still have to take a peek at binchou-tan. but I’m a bit afraid of the emotional shokku.

I think that the thing about Magikano is how self aware the anime is. It’s generic, and it knows it, so why not just have fun being fluff?

Also, the mega-wimp Haruo hardly even qualifies as being a character in the anime. What’s left is a bunch of crazy interactions between all the witches and whatnot.

This “turn off your brain and enjoy it” attitude is a crock of bull. Cuz I can bet you people that say that are the same people who wanna burn down Sunrise for that “abomination” of G-Gundam (which is a badass show don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise, SCREW socio-political genetic conflict, me watch big robot smash other robot with rapid fire kicks and punches, hahahaha).

Magikano is as generic as generic can be. I’ll never be tricked like that again. What happened to breaking free of formulas? where are my cat brain in military android stories? My “little sister swiped my mecha” Moldiver stories. If you’re gonna do a harem show, make it different! Your male lead doesn’t have to be a super badass but FFS he doesn’t have to be a spineless wussy boy! AUGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

    A haiku about Magikano:

    They said you were dumb,
But you look good and are fun,
    Please go out with me.

I watched a few more episodes and it definitely gets… “better”… Some dogs are dumb and fluffy, but we still love them anyway. And by dogs I mean fanservicey series about witches.

If I was writing this list again, I’d probably put Magikano in slot 5, bumping out that imposter Mashiro. Maybe imposter. Maybe…

    Dear Kab,

Please start blogging GunXSword so I can be cool again and people stop ganging up on me, when I start hating on Magikano.

    Signed,

But seriously, I still love you guys anyway:)

I’m totally late, but after watching Magikano 10, sign me in as a magikano-hardcore-fanboy. This ep is probably the most hilarious anime I’ve ever watched, really. The guys who made it are tensai(s).
