Ginban Kaleidoscope continues to deliver in the price/performance category, and keeps the laughs rolling in despite its shrimpy budget. Where else can you get your fill of figure skating, tomato binging, and bowel movement in 20 minutes or less?
As Tazusa becomes accustomed to having Peet shadow her all the time, we learn a bit more about her situation as one of Japan’s top skater. Apparently, in the previous year she was one of two skaters representing Japan in the Olympic quals, but since the other skater (the beloved Shitou Kyoko) was unable to compete due to injuries, Tazusa alone was responsible for securing Japan’s spots in the Olympics. Unfortunately, she flubbed up dramatically, and Japan lost two of its three spots due to her poor performance. Of course, now the entire country seems to blame her and have been hounding her steps ever since. With the Olympic trials coming up soon, she’s going to have to prove herself better than Shitou Kyoko to secure her position as Japan’s representative.
There’s this whole plot thing about a sneaky reporter dude who is trying to advance the cause of Japanese figure skating by arranging a meeting between the supposed “bitter rivals” Kyoko and Tazusa. But really, who cares? The important thing is that Tazusa hasn’t emptied her intestines yet because of Peet’s presence…but how much longer can she hold it? Peet’s getting pretty cramped up too, since he can feel everything she does. Tazusa has also discovered that Peet hates tomatoes with a passion, and eats them as punishment whenever possible (going so far as to keep a stash of tomatoes handy in every situation). Perhaps she doesn’t realize that this is hastening her inevitable trip to the can.
Ginban Kaleidoscope’s plot will most likely be a rehash of ever other sports anime plot out there (work hard, powah up, win the championships), but all the extra filler material in between make it enjoyable to watch. Tazusa is also unlike most sports anime heroines in that she’s kind of an ass, and has a massive ego to boot (what else can you say about someone who constantly refers to herself as a ‘person of exceptional beauty and talent’?). I only hope that prolonged exposure to the constantly upbeat Peet will not mellow her out.
Last note: there was an actual intro this time! Nothing special, but it’s better than nothing. Also, the ending animation is of…<gasp>…a kaleidoscope view! Shocking, isn’t it?
