Suzuka 14

We finally learn the motivation behind Miki’s camouflage fetish, as she overhears Yamato suggesting that he and Honoka go out. While Honoka cries tears of joy, Miki is now stuck with the thankless task of telling Suzuka about what she just saw. This leads to a series of awkward situations where Miki finally has to stop Suzuka from buying a shirt for Yamato, and tell her what the deal is. Suzuka suddenly realizes that fate hates her.

After practice, Honoka slips away with Yamato to have a little chat. She confesses that she’s been lusting after him since the shrine incident, and that she joined the track team to be with him. Yasunobu picks up on the Honoka-Yamato vibes, and is able to stick up for his friend when Miki wonders why Yasunobu doesn’t try to break the lovebirds up. However, it’s clear that the foundations of love are pretty shaky when Suzuka confronts Yamato about his new girlfriend; instead of being like “Yeah, I’m off the market, ice-princess,” he mumbles, “Ah, no, I… Yeah we’re going out.” Wow, nice vote of confidence. Suzuka pretends to be ok with all this, but now she can’t sleep and she’s clearly shaken up by the sudden development. Naturally this leads to a strange turn of events where Yamato and her get left off the last train back to Tokyo (Yamato wanted to go get juices for everyone…), and Honoka starts to feel the stirrings of the jealousy-bug.

While Yamato does manage to avoid many of the standard harem-male pitfalls, he definitely lost a lot of points with me in this episode. Ok, so we all know that he’s totally taking Honoka as a consolation prize, and kicking himself now that Suzuka’s showing interest again, but why hasn’t he even told his best friend? Plus, we all know that he sooooo badly wanted to lie about his new girlfriend to Suzuka, so he could bag the double play. Yasunobu is braving an empty playing field and constant taunts from the track team to back up Yamato, and he can’t even get an update? I bet Yasunobu feels like Miki now, what with his wing commander not even telling him what’s up. Still, Yasunobu does get an awesome quote, telling Miki that “There are no rights or wrongs in love. Outsiders should just watch.” I’m rooting for Yasunobu to find someone, but I’m starting to think he wouldn’t be a good match for Miki; they would spend all their time trying to help their best friends instead of being with each other! Somewhere, Kobayakawa is crying hot tears of frustration and anger.

This is not to say I disliked the episode, as I really did like how everything worked out. The running gag of Yamato never being able to find a restaurant is ok with me, and I am loving this new Honoka jealousy. Right now they are being accurately portrayed in that annoying/awkward initial phase in their relationship. You know, the phase that makes everyone around you want to puke as you get all lovey-dovey. If Honoka’s mad that Yamato didn’t take his cell phone, wait till she finds out he’s spending the night alone with Suzuka! Speaking of Suzuka (BTW, Suzuka is still my favorite character in the series, even though I rag on her all the time), what’s with her change in attitude with Yamato? I know she’s trying to pretend, but is it easier to pretend now that the pressure’s off? Mabye it’s easier on Suzuka to pull the strings with someone else’s man, knowing there is a decreased chance of a relationship. Damn, I love complicated women!

Mad props to Miki for immediately assuming Suzuka fell asleep on the toilet when she didn’t return right away. Is this something that happens a lot?

You probably solved the mystery why women need a winggirl on the toilet: They keep each other awake. That’s certainly more comfortable than mumbling I “MUST NOT FALL ASLEEP, I MUST NOT FALL ASLEEP” *poop*. That said I wonder whether Suzuka walks through the door or whether she prefers to jump over it.
