Not too much plot development in this episode, but a whole buttload of action. Dullindal has united the Earth factions against Blue Cosmos, and brings a massive army to Heaven’s Base, the Cosmos headquarters, to demand their surrender. Jibril and his old fogies are quivering in their boots deep within the confines of the base, but still have some pretty nasty tricks to pull. Instead of sending an official reply, the BC forces simply attack without warning. After recovering from the initial shock, Dullindal orders the counterattack, but is confronted with another surprise in the form of five new Destroy Gundams that proceed to lay waste to the ZAFT forces. If that wasn’t enough, Heaven’s Base activates its Nibelung mass-destruction weapon, which disintegrates all the ZAFT forces in the aerial space surrounding the base.
Fortunately, Dullindal has just what the doctor ordered: Destiny and Legend, with Lunamaria joining them in Shinn’s hand-me-down, the Impulse. Of great importance is that Luna and Shinn shared a pre-slaughter smooch after a short monologue about how she blames Orb for turning Athrun and Meyrin into bastardly rebel scum. I figure she’s pretty much the reincarnation of Frey at this point, though with less crazy-juice in her blood.
As expected, the new Gundams perform admirably against the Destroys. The El Cheapo energy shielding protects them from beam weapons, and their superior mobility allows them to evade missile weapons. Shinn pulls a Kenshin and slices one in half (which is followed by the classic “two-halves sliding apart” animation), and Lunamaria takes down another with the aid of Rey. One of the units is piloted by Sting (who, in typical Gundam fashion, survived the plunge into a body of water), but is pierced by Shinn’s sword after first being slammed with a Destiny-style chidori/rasengan. In the midst of the chaos, Jibril realizes that he’s lost, and leaves his compatriots behind as he escapes in a shuttle.
Meanwhile, back on the Archangel, Athrun wakes up in the sickbay, injured but alive. Apparently Meyrin made it too, and is reportedly in better condition that he is. Strangely enough though, we’re never shown her as being conscious, whereas Athrun has enough energy to resume his angsty posing. They better not have Meyrin die of unexpected complications!
I did like that fact that Impulse’s modular design came in handy during the battle to supply both Luna and Rey with swords. Now that she has a decent unit, Lunamaria has been doing pretty well lately! Her track record with the Zaku was pretty shabby, but I guess we can chalk that up to the limitations of the suit. Also, does anyone else here think that the new opening song is a bit…lame? It sounds too darn relaxed and light-rockish for the what’s going to be the most carnage-filled arc in GSD. At least they brought back Yuki Kajiura and See-Saw for the ending song…
