The chairman presents Shinn and Athrun with their new superpowered gundams (just like in the first GS…sigh…), the titular Destiny and the Providence-look-alike Legend. Dullindal totally sweet talks Shinn, praising him for his recent accomplishments, and Shinn totally eats it up, like the military dog that he is. He’s starting to get this glowing happy puppy-dog look on his face whenever he’s around the chairman…kind of like Rey. Athrun, on the other hand, is still incensed about the orders to destroy the Archangel, and isn’t nearly as elated. The chairman senses this and spams more rhetoric about how he is working toward world peace, etc. Athrun still isn’t totally convinced, but lets it be.
Later, the chairman and Rey secretly have a meeting about how pesky Athrun is becoming, and decide to move against him. Meer (poking around with abandon, as usual) overhears this, and also picks up a dropped photo of Athrun’s clandestine meeting with Kira and company. She goes to Athrun’s room and lets him know, not out of a sense of loyalty or friendship, but because her own status will be endangered if he doesn’t correct his behavior. Also, I partially think that she’s doing this because she really believes she is Lacus, and is acting through Lacus’s sense of loyalty. She tries to convince Athrun to mend his ways and act less “traitorous”, but he won’t brook any of that nonsense. At that moment, armed soldiers rap on the door, intending to arrest him. Athrun busts out the window into the nighttime rain, and ambushes the guards when they try to follow. He grabs Meer and tries to bring her with him, insisting that Dullindal is just using them both like puppets. Unfortunately, Meer doesn’t want to leave. As Lacus, she has everything she never had before, and is happy the way she is. Of course, her ensuing miserable expression indicates that she’s unhappy about one thing- losing Athrun.
Meyrin is doing some late night computing when Athrun rushes into her room and closes the door before realizing someone was there. Damn, doesn’t that girl lock her door? Anyways, soldiers come round looking for Athrun, and Meyrin decides to help the poor sap out. She strips down to her undies, douses herself with water, and wraps a towel around herself before going out to meet the guards. Lunamaria happens to be there and throws a fit when she sees the guards ogling her sister, which gets them off her back. After they leave, Meyrin hacks the computer system and starts an alarm on the other side of the base, and the two make their escape to the hangars. On their way there though, Rey spots Meyrin driving in the middle of the night, and instantly suspects something. After trading gunfire with Athrun (and getting pwned), he makes a strategic retreat for more firepower, but upon his return finds Athrun and Meyrin boarding a pastel blue Gouf that Martha Stewart would probably approve of. The two jet out, pursued by Shinn and Rey in Destiny and Legend. Their chase causes an uproar among the visiting Earth nations that wish to ally with ZAFT, and the chairman gives orders to try to keep this fiasco under wraps.
I don’t know exactly why, but I love the scenes where Athrun is forced to pilot a grunt suit in order to survive. Part of it is probably because we never really get to see the full abilities of those generic mooks since they get killed off so quickly, and to finally see one putting up a good fight is pretty entertaining. I like cheering for the underdog, you might say. I always did wonder though, how many axes do those Zakus have stored in their shield? In an early episode, I could have sworn Athrun threw like 3 of them, and always was able to pull another one out of his shield to fend off melee attacks. Maybe it was just a recap…
On a side note, it was interesting to see what Meer used to look like. Goodness, she must have undergone some major plastic surgery. Kabitzin theorizes that she is the Michael Jackson of the Seed world. Also, does Meyrin have a major crush on Athrun or what? That quickie flashback montage seemed to indicate she was always watching him.

Yeah, I like Athrun piloting grunt units too - better shows his mettle as a pilot. ZAKU Warrior carries one beam axe. I guess the retrieval of the axe isn’t shown after it’s been thrown.
Meyrin’s crush on Athrun hasn’t been as overt as Lunamaria’s but it’s there. Most clearly seen in GSD 19 when she ‘accidentally’ glomped him. Right in front of Lunamaria too!
Yeah now that I look back at earlier episodes, Meyrin always gets this sad puppy dog look whenever Luna starts macking on Athrun in public. Awww, poor Meyrin! Although she did one-up Luna in the glomping incident…and Shinn was so clueless as to the little games they were playing!
>> and Shinn was so clueless as to the little games they were playing!
Wait a second, that doesn’t sound like Shinn at all!
Well, Meyrin *really* does one-up Lunamaria in this ep by eloping with Athrun. Now he is in debt to her, wonder how she’ll cash that IOU! And after this ep, I just had to go: Awww, poor Lunamaria!
nice move for meyrin! she really did one-up luna. her crush with athrun is so obvious! but athrun’s kinda dumb though……. you know…. for him not to notice that…. hehe joke…..
dammit i hate both of those girls!!!! CAgalli is sooooo better
