Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan 01-02

When we first meet Sakura, he seems like just a normal boy, crushing on classmate Shizuki. After this opening scene, however, all normalcy goes out the window, and we find that Sakura is living with a cute angel named Dokuro. Unfortunately, the awesome OP quickly makes it clear that Dokuro is a bit violent, and has a nasty habit of… killing Sakura. In fact, she carries around this thorny bat, named Excalibolg, just so she will always have an instrument of death handy. The silver lining, is that she can bring him back and clean up the gory mess by using stock footage and chanting Pipiru piru piru pipiru pi.

After another day of harassment, Sakura learns that Dokuro is planning on going to school with him. He’s clearly upset about this, and makes Dokuro swear that she won’t use any of her angelic powers. Even though she agrees, it’s not long before she tells the teacher she has a halo because she is an angel, erases the existence of one of Sakura’s classmates, and changes the class representative into a monkey. Naturally, nobody even bats an eyelash at this. While in the bathroom, however, a little goblin tells Dokuro that Rurutie is sending another assassin after Sakura. Dokuro tracks down Sakura, but not before he is ambushed by the newest angelic assassin, Sabato. Sabato uses her charms to trick Sakura into confiscating Dokuro’s halo (which apparently gives angels bad… stomach pains…), and then gets ready to zap Sakura with her super electromagnetic stun gun rod, Durandal. It turns out that in the future, Sakura will accidentally invent a lolicon device that will grant eternal youth. The angelic organization Rurutie sent Dokuro to kill Sakura, but she instead decided to simply annoy him so much he would remain stupid. Just before Sabato can finish off Sakura, however, Dokuro attacks her and stalls her long enough for Sakura to gain the upper hand. He tosses Sabato’s halo out the window, and then returns Dokuro’s halo. Too bad she’s not exactly the forgiving type…

Wow, where to begin with this one? It certainly wasn’t what I expected to ever see in an anime series, but I suppose the title does hint at the strange amalgamation of service, gore, and cuteness. I thought the OP was especially catchy, and in spite of the constant Kill Bill-esque gore and the wacky, fugly faces, I enjoyed the first two episodes. Although some will be turned off by those aforementioned tendencies, the first two episodes had a nice fast pace and a lot of quirky humor as well. I really liked the strange news report at the beginning (GW was wearing an eraser???), and Dokuro’s use of manga as a justification for her actions (although Doraemon didn’t exactly fit the model). Dokuro was really cute, and unlike a lot of female leads, her annoyingness is actually justified and intentional. I’m not sure why, but somehow this makes it better. I also liked Sakura’s various classmates. Overall, I think this series is off to a fast (but bizarre) start, and I’m looking forward to more!

About Kabitzin:
One of the founders of Sea Slugs, I handle most of the blog admin tasks while wearing my I AM BOSS shirt. I like my action series well-choreographed, and my romance series extra trashy. I also have a soft spot for puns.

Never underestimate the power of stock footage. :P Notice on the news in the background that the story right after Kim Jong-Il’s glasses was Michael Jackson? Thought that was pretty funny. Not nearly as funny as the rest of this show though. :D

I’ve only had the honor to watch ep. 1&2, but this is a great anime. The animation is of an awesome quality, and if you’re looking for a little bit of funny, a little bit of gorey, and a little bit of sexy, then this is the anime you want, because as ironic as it is this anime has all three mashed together with a beautiful spiked mace weilded by a crazy and cute angel girl. ^^

When downloading, look for the “triad” version which is uncut (geysers of blood!) whereas the version I initially downloaded turned out to be censored TV episodes. Actually, Sakura getting the top of his head taken off happens so fast that you would never notice things like eyeballs flying through the air unless you paused repeatedly. The fact that Dokura-chan is supposedly a “slaughtering angel” makes this inherently absurd and hilarious, unlike the violence in, say, Girls Bravo. Lots of potty humor, too!
