The trio are in the forest when Fuu spots a shooting star and wishes for safety, the sunflower samurai, and lots of food. Just like that, Mugen finds some mushrooms called matsutake, also known as the Mountain’s Jewels. Before Fuu can grab some for herself, Jin and Mugen eat all the mushrooms, leaving poor Fuu running around hungry in a sort of monkey in the middle. Then, in a crushing blow, however, Fuu reveals that the fortune-telling section of the newspaper warned against mushrooms. Suddenly, a hole in the ground opens and the gang is pulled under. They awaken to find themselves in a sort of strip mine operated by tons of zombies working under Shige, a shamisen-wielding descendant of Heike. Shige reveals that he is trying to dig out the Heike’s buried treasure, and he busts out a lineage scroll to prove his ancestry. Additionally, a flame held up to the scroll reveals a sort of hidden map. Fuu thinks it’s all just a bunch of baloney, but they get roped into staying since they need food and money. The gang works the mines, but as time passes they get suspicious. Days feel like months, and Fuu begins to suspect the other workers are wasabi-eating zombies that eat wasabi to ward off rotting. These suspicions are confirmed when Shige takes Fuu to a graveyard, and the trio is soon surrounded by angry zombies. Fuu yells that the workers have been digging for 500, and not 5, years, and then Jin points out that Shige’s family line is actually not connected to the family tree of the Heike. All the other zombies are pissed about this, but then the meteor that was shown before (and at various points throughout the episode) crashes down and destroys the mining camp, leaving behind a mushroom cloud.
Ok, this episode really made no sense at all, and it showed that shamisens are not enough to make an episode (even if the Sara arc and the time when Jin dressed up as a shamisen playing lady were really cool). I wonder if Dante and Hohenheim realized that they could have just eaten wasabi instead of looking for the Philosopher’s Stone, but other than that, not much worth mentioning happened.

Shige is personally one of my favorite characters. Mainly due to his attitude, along with his uniquity in the anime. I still haven’t decided who is cooler. Kayuri or Shige? Such a tough choice.
