Uta~Kata 05

Ichika and Kai are finishing up some studying when Ichika asks Kai what it means to see. With the power of the Djinns, Ichika has been granted the power of sight in many forms, and she is confused about the purpose of her seeing all that she’s been exposed to. Kai declares that while the light may hurt your eyes (and even cause you to shut them), you cannot see anything without light. Moreover, what good or bad comes out of seeing is incumbent on the observer. On his way home, Kai catches a glimpse of Saya, and he doesn’t seem too pleased about it. Meanwhile, Ichika and the gang don yukata’s to go to the fireworks festival. On their walk to the beach, they run into one of Satsuki’s friends from grade school, Nozomu (in hindsight, I realize that this name was one of those ZOMG foreshadowing kinda moments). It’s hinted that Satsuki has a bit of a crush on him, and Satsuki’s brother is happy that she seems to have found a boyfriend. When Keiko, Satsuki, and Nozomu go to buy some drinks, however, it becomes clear that something is awry. Nozomu fiendishly tells Satsuki to go wait for him (she thinks he’s going to confess T_T) while he goes off and makes out with Keiko. When Ichika tries to call Nozomu, the cell phone rings from within Keiko’s bag, and so Manatsu and Ichika go to investigate (using the Djinn of Fire’s powers). To their surprise, they see Satsuki, just as she catches Nozomu and Keiko making some fireworks of their own. Satsuki is devastated, but she tells Manatsu and Ichika not to tell anyone about her crying. They join up with their friends and everyone pretends that all is right with the world.

I’m not sure why this occured to me, but does Sei have a lisp? Anyway, this episode centered around 4 themes: seeing, hiding, and Keiko’s breasts. It was really sad watching Satsuki’s plight, but when you like a guy with a name like Nozomu, it’s bound to end in a horrific disaster. Satsuki didn’t get hit by a car, so she should just consider herself lucky and call it a day. Even knowing this, however, it was so absolutely gut-wrenching listening to Satsuki declare that she felt she was blooming, while her brother murmured that he was so happy his little sister had a boyfriend. And then for Satsuki to have to ask Ichika to fix Keiko’s touseled yukata after the Keiko-Nozomu makeout session exposed too much cleavage (you can’t stop them, you can only hope to contain them)… it was just painful. I really liked the episode’s dealings with what it means to see, as Ichika was forced to see and yet also to obscure. Even though what she sees pains her, and she is unable to help Satsuki, Ichika needs to see through the power of the Djinns, and it is up to her to determine what comes of this newfound knowledge. It’s all very deep and very mysterious.

Ichika finally came out and said she was still doing Manatsu’s homework. Way to crack that whip, Manatsu!
