Mai Hime 02

Episode 2 opens up with Mai getting grilled by Suzushiro Haruka, executive director, about how she ended up at the school on a burning land glacier. While the girl that Mai saved is still unconscious, Mai goes about her first day at school and befriends Senou Aoi (who likes Takumi) and Harada Chie (gossip queen). As it turns out, the biker girl from before also attends the school. Her name is Kuga Natsuki, but apparently she’s quite the truant. Natsuki talks with some fat guy with an afro about the behind the scenes work she’s involved in, while Mai saves the girl from the ship from hunger and overly spicy curry bread. The girl reveals her name to be Mikoto, and after scarfing down some noodles, she bounds out the window like a stray cat. When Mai goes after her, she finds out that her wimpy brother is in trouble from that stupid DBZ reject kid, Nagi. A gigantic bug ambushes Takumi, and then Mikoto remembers her dead mom and bursts into a column of fire.

I’m not sure why, but that Nagi kid really makes me mad. As does this show. It feels absurd like Bakuretsu Tenshi, but with less mech action and more stock footage. The characters that have been introduced so far are largely forgetable, and I don’t like the lame cliche love-hate relationship between Yuuichi and Mai. Maybe because the show seems to take itself too seriously, but the plot is not lovably stupid like BakuTen, nor is the comedy funny (except for maybe Mikoto). At the moment, only Claes Natsuki and the hope for more cool melee scenes are keeping me watching this show. Also, I’m sure they’ll give Natsuki some cooler stock footage later, but why are her dinky ice pistols so weak? And her wolf is just like a rag doll for enemies. Grrrrrr…

The Naji clone irks me to no end, especially with his tendency for standing on gazebos and sprouting utter rubbish. I still can’t decide whether there’s a really good storyline behind all the pointless characters, but at this point, I simply don’t care :(

I know! He reminds me of Amelia from Slayers, except without the humor or the Visfarank. I think Mikoto is the only funny one in this entire show.
