This episode seems to start in media res, as we get a glimpse of wanderer Okuru covered in flames and then dropping off a cliff into water. Skipping back a little, we see Mugen berating Fuu for details about the Sunflower Samurai. She has none, and after a brief argument, the three split ways again. Each one meets with a little bit of danger as Okuru shoots some arrows at Mugen (mistaken identity), and Fuu follows Momo-chan off a cliff. Meanwhile, Jin is confronted by an old lival from his dojo, Yukimaru. Unlike the other students of the dojo, Yukimaru is not after revenge; rather, he wants to become famous by killing Jin. He’s still no match for Jin, but Jin graciously offers to let Yukimaru say he killed him before jumping off the cliff into the water. Elsewhere, a bunch of men mistake Mugen for Okuru and ambush him. We’ll have to wait for episode 17 to find out what happens to Mugen.
Holy plot development Batman! Although there was some unnecessary wooden boombox rapping (wtf…), overall this episode was full of plot development. Not only do we get a few more clues into Jin’s past, we finally get to see a glimpse of the sunflower samurai being pursued by chibi-Fuu. I must say that I really like the art style of these drowning/flashback scenes, although Fuu’s drowning didn’t have cool music like in Mugen’s drowning did. On a separate note, Momo-chan hasn’t been pulling his weight lately.
