Samurai Champloo 08

Our trio is once again penniless and hungry, and so they pawn off Jin’s glasses for a bit of cash. In town, they encounter some serious nanpa, as an absurd yakuza-hip-hop-samurai named Nagamichi tries to win Fuu’s affection, and Jin & Mugen are seduced by an alcohol-loving temptress. In between rants about how he is so “big” (ugh…), Nagamichi declares that he is searching for a man wearing glasses who killed the master of his dojo. The shishou-killer’s name? Jin. Of course it turns out that one of the big fraud’s toadies is actually a disciple of the dojo seeking revenge, and as soon as Jin gets his glasses back from the pawn shop, they identify him and attack. Jin quickly delivers the beatdown, and we find out that the fraud and the floozy were actually a married couple.

If not for the information about Jin’s past, this episode would have been a bit of a waste, as it’s not particularly funny or action-packed. Maybe if I got all the inside jokes about live samurai TV shows I would have been more entertained, but Nagamichi really had nothing to do with helping Fuu find the sunflower samurai. Mugen is also displaying an alarming weakness to women and alcohol, as he completely owned by the floozy. As for Jin, he seems to be pretty weak when it comes to holding his liquor.
