Bakuretsu Tenshi 13

The final episode in the Osaka mutant brain arc ends with a spectacular bang, and justifies the wait. After their last defeat, the good guys are forced to regroup and re-plan. Jo tells Leo to outfit Jango with some wings, and Takane has her gang of biker chicks search for the hideout of Iriki and the Giantbot Gigantis. The Giantbot Gigantis is powered by the mutant brain from the Ultrabeast actor, and Sei wants it as a souvenir of their visit to Osaka. Fortunately for them, Iriki isn’t really an evil genius… quite frankly he’s just a jerk. All he does with the Giantbot Gigantis is break up a parade and shoot a few buildings. With help from Takane and a giant mechanical mustached robot crab, Jo is able to save Osaka (what’s left of it) and go home.

This episode brought up even more intellectual questions about the BakuTen universe. I am in suspense over whether or not Jo actually saved the mutant brain or not, since she had to jump to save Takane. A small part of me cheered when it looked like Jo would finally get Sei the mutant brain (the perfect gift for the crime syndicate princess who has everything), but then I was left with that cliffhanger. The other question I had was regarding the choice for mutant hosts. If the bad guys are so smart, why didn’t they pick up on this sooner? They’ve tried cultivating cooks and schoolgirls, when clearly Sentai show villians are the best hosts for mutant brains. Also, is Jo wearing a leg brace or does she have a mechanical leg? The final topic of note regards Takane’s new crush on Leo. Leo’s definitely got the mojo that comes with being able to build a cybot and shoot down a platoon of soldiers before Meg can even get a shot off, so I’m looking forward to Takane stalking him in Tokyo. Now Gonzo is even adding mystery and romance to the mix!

The action and plot were so over the top, that it just brought a smile back to my face to watch this episode. Until this afternoon, I didn’t realize how much I missed Bakuretsu Tenshi. Everything from the cross-dressing gay defenders of Osaka to the inexplicable Tetsuzo-Giantbot Gigantis headbutt fit in wonderfully with BakuTen. The classical elements of Meg getting captured, tied up, and rescued, and Sei’s quest for mutant brains for robots were present as well. Even the story was advanced. It was perfect.
