Although Naruto gives his best shot, he still has a ways to go to master the rasengan as Tsunade realtively avoids it by breaking the ground in front of her and causing Naruto to trip and fall. Although, Tsunade is quite surprised to see Naruto capable of starting the tough Jutsu, she calls Naruto out and says that he won’t be able to master it. Not to be denied, Naruto shouts back saying that he would only need 3 more days to master the rasengan, and Tsunade proposes a bet. If Naruto is able to master the rasengan in a week, she will give him her necklace; otherwise, she’ll keep Naruto’s wallet.
Back in his hotel room, Naruto is encountered by Shizune, who fills Naruto in on Tsunade’s history and the tragedies that have scarred her life, from the loss of her brother Nawaki to the death of her boyfriend Dan while she attemped to heal him. Also, as a result of Dan dying in her attempt to save him, she develops a phobia of blood as she had Dan’s blood spilled all over her hands to heal him. In both cases, Tsunade had given her necklace to Nawaki and Dan, so it seems as if the necklace has some “curse” attached to it. At the end, Shizune pleads Naruto to not take Tsunade’s bet; however, based on Naruto’s reaction, it seems to make him even more intent to win the bet.
Although this episode was rather slow-paced, it does a good job of filling in the viewer of Tsunade’s past and how she had been affected and scarred by it. At this point, she seems willing to throw away her commitment to Konoha to see the people closest to her. Jiraiya also realizes the magnitude of the situation and takes a rather serious stand on Tsunade’s decision to the point of threatening to kill her if she sides with Orochimaru.
