In their search for the sunflower samurai, our trio has problems paying ferry fare and so they are forced to scrounge cash as best they can. Mugen has some success beating up ruffians for small change, but he blows the whole thing on roasted squid on a stick (and who can blame him!). Jin just sits down for some shougi, wagering his life for a chance to win some major lewt. Fuu, on the other hand, takes up a modeling job for a charming ukiyo-e artist. Too bad he’s actually working for a gang that kidnaps young women and sells them by using the ukiyo-e paintings as a catalogue!
Although the narration by that dorky undercover cop is super cheesy, the interaction between Fuu and the ukiyo-e artist is very good. I really felt bad for Fuu when she realized that she had been tricked, and even Momo-chan couldn’t get her out this time. The ukiyo-e artist was a great character, and I loved it when he made his own echo after showing off his racey Fuu fanart. Jin had some interesting dialogue as well, and I want to learn more about his dojo life (did he kill his master or something?). He seems to attract older men for some reason. On a side note, I have had those squid sticks before and they are the shiz! I’d totally take a handful of squid sticks over ferry fare any day.
Oh yes, and I felt the music was particularly good in this episode.

Ha, Jin seems to attract “older men”? This is the first time I’m noticing it, but it’s both true *and* oddly disturbing (^_^)
Maybe this is just me, but Champloo is starting to pale. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but perhaps it’ll get better by next episode :-)
I thought it was interesting how they tried to tie the Champloo world to the real world through the Van Gogh ukiyo-e connection. This kind of historical fiction slant floats my boat for some reason!
