Popotan 01

I’d read a little about Popotan, and I liked the colorful art style so I finally decided to check it out. Needless to say, its H-game roots show through pretty prominently. It’s pretty light fare so far, with some familiar concepts, but I’d say it’s fairly entertaining.

The show follows three sisters: Ai (the gentle, absurdly-endowed, oldest sister), Mai (the traditional active, athletic middle sister), and Mii (the ultra-genki little sister who will glomp anything squishy, e.g. frogs, cheeks, cow udders, etc.) in their house that sorta teleports between various locations every few days. Also in the house are their maid Mare and their cleavage-loving ferret Unagi that can change into a girl. To add to the craziness, it seems that they love dandelions (which they call “popotan” instead of the correct pronunciation “tanpopo”), and Ai can even talk with the weeds.

Underlying the comedy, there seems to be the sadness of always having to move, and the mystery of what/who the sisters are. There is also plenty of fanservice; fortunately, the story does not completely rely on these devices just yet. Interesting, the dubious encoding job by Triad resulted in large blocks of pixels that effectively censored much of the episode. I’m pretty interested in seeing how the story plays out, and Popotan is a fairly short series (12 episodes), so I think I’ll try to make it through.
