Paranoia Agent 1

When I first heard about this anime, I was thinking that this is about some sort of demented detective whose mind would twist and turn all the cases that he investigates to the point where he goes mad. Well, I was way off . The first thing that struck me was the weird introduction, with the “AHHHHH III YOAAAA AAAIIIOWA!!!”, the yodeling-like singing, and the characters just standing there and laughing while mushroom clouds go off in the background. This episode is based around Sagi Tsukiko, who resembles Osaka from Azumanga Daioh. Sagi Tsukiko is the creator of Morumi, a dog-like and pink but cute animal with an oversized head that has become a raging hit in Japan as you will see Morumi products all over the anime. The main plot of this episode revolves around a mysterious bat-boy on roller blades that attacks Tsukiko in a parking lot as she’s going home. The police comes in to investigate, but they initially think that she may be making the story up since she seems reluctant to tell them details about the attack. In addition, there’s this slimy news reporter named Howard that also has interest in this story and conducts his own investigation into the bat-boy incident.

The production values of this anime are very high, with high quality animations and well drawn characters and scenes. Although this first episode may not give you the big picture of what’s going on, I think it just sets the tone for the upcoming episodes to come.
