Summary:
No amount of botox is going to erase her frown lines by the time she's 18
For unknown reasons, the IS school has an onsen class trip. With all the girls vying for a spot next to Ichika, Charlotte and Cecilia end up winning. Realizing that sitting Japanese-style is too much for her legs to bear, Cecilia is unable to feed herself, thus requiring Ichika to do it for her while Houki looks on. Near the end of dinner Ichika asks Charlotte to go to his room after dinner because he has something to tell her.
"Now which one of you girls wants to see me open my legs further?"
Cecilia makes it to the room Ichika and Chifuyu are sharing only to see the other four girls all listening in to the events inside. It seems Ichika is giving his onee-san plenty of mysterious pleasure, which is soon revealed as a back massage when the girls fall through the door by listening too closely. After getting Ichika out of the way, Chifuyu confronts the girls and asks which one will step up and be a real woman and really go after her little brother.

The next morning, Ichika is walking outside when he sees Houki staring at some bunny ears in the ground which annoys her and she leaves. Undaunted, Ichika pulls them out to be greeted by a giant carrot falling out of the sky out of which steps out Houki’s missing older sister Tabane. Using her dowsing techniques Tabane quickly tracks down Houki who’s with the rest of the girls. After an awkward family reunion and some attempted Chifuyu breast grope the wacky Tabane introduces herself to the other girls and brings out Houki’s new IS, the Akatsubaki. The world’s first ever fourth generation IS designed by Tabane herself, the new machine has significantly improved specs compared to all the other machines in existence.
"Uh sensei, why are you letting us kids do the dangerous part?"
All of a sudden an emergency breaks out. Apparently a joint Israeli/American unmanned IS has gone berserk and is heading directly towards the onsen. Chifuyu quickly hatches a plan whereby the teachers will stay far back in relative safety while the kids are in charge of a one in a million shot at destroying it. Because they only have one shot, Ichika with his IS is chosen, and Houki and her new IS will go with him.
As they ready for the operation, Tanabe explains that it reminds her of the White Knight incident 10 years ago. Back when Tanabe first announced the creation of the IS, someone decided to send 2000+ missles at Japan, but a mysterious white IS destroyed them all only to never be seen again.
Reaction:
This was by far the absolute most random episode of Infinite Stratos yet. I guess the creators decided that they had done the beach episode, it wasn’t time for a festival episode yet, so they might as well inexplicably do an onsen episode, but without any onsen perverted goodness.Then they decide to throw in a completely random emergency and for some inexplicable reason make the kids deal with it, while the greatest IS driver in history (Chifuyu) stands around.
Even weirder was the scene where Chifuyu decides to confront the girls about liking Ichika. In the beginning of the episode we see Ichika asking Cecilia to come to his room. Was this planned by Chifuyu (who incidentally decides to ask for a very loud massage just to tease the girls?) or did Ichika actually want to talk to Cecilia? And since when does the older sister ever confront the harem and tell the girls to get more serious about chasing her little brother?
In the beginning of the show, we got the sense that there was some alienation between Chifuyu and Ichika, but it seems with every passing episode that they are actually super close. While I don’t mind this turn of events, it just seems kind of forced.
Either way +1 for Chifuyu consuming beer and making the ‘beer squeal’.
As for plot, it seems that while Tanabe was ‘officially’ missing, Houki knew how to get her all along, and now that she’s reappeared, Chifuyu’s already reported her to the authorities.
The upcoming battle looks like it may actually be the battle we saw in the little ‘preview’ during the beginning of the first episode, in which case all of the girls will be involved. Regardless, with her new suit Houki is well positioned to be the ‘end girl’ as evidenced by the new order of the girls in the ED.
P.S. I’d feed Charlotte wasabi any day ^_^

They are still at the same location as the previous episode’s beach, a seaside training facility. They came here to train, not (only) for the beach and the hot spring.
The feeling of randomness is caused by the anime staff, like, totally know the true priority of this show, and cut nearly everything inbetween moe and mecha, i.e. anything that could actually establish some coherent sense of time, space or causality. Since I’ve long decided that both the original novels and this anime should be enjoyed for their “so bad it’s good” quality, I’m not complaining

You are the only one I’ve seen who makes this observation, and you’re absolutely correct.
This is a result of the author being unable to make up his mind about what kind of relationship they have (or even what kind of person Ichika is) when he wrote Vol 1 of the novel (corresponding to Ep 1 – 4) .
Vol 1′s characterization of Ichika is highly inconsistent. On a few occasions we’re told Ichika’s very close to Chifuyu, yet for the most part their relationship is shown to be generic alienation. Ichika’s personality became better defined in later volumes.
And by removing most instances of Chifuyu showing her softer side, the anime isn’t helping.
I totally agree that the direction of the show is completely off. Events just seem to randomly happen because they’ve cut the actual plot to the absolute minimum in favour of more tsundere/fanservice adventures.
Thanks for detailing how the novel was inconsistent too as I have never read the novels! Makes sense. I always had the feeling that Chifuyu/Ichika == Tanabe/Houki but it increasingly feels less so.
Sounds like a great Oneesan to me. (And she’s right, got to take the initiative if you want Dense-kun (Ichika) to actually make a choice.) Taking a stab in harem anime, oh boy.

Well finally things are getting fun with a possible battle next week! Guess its the fight, from the first episode?
Justice transformed though, this doesn’t! Justice is actually one of my favorite suits, so much so I even bought a Justice toy from Japan.
I think the fight next week is the one from the first episode, and as that fight had everyone involved, I think it’s only natural that everyone will end up joining in. So perhaps Houki’s ‘end girl’ position is not for sure yet.
The older girls (e.g. Yamada-sensei and, now, Tabane) seem to have a thing for Chifuyu. Yuri FTW!
And when Tabane called out: Chi-chan! I couldn’t help but think of Wandering Son lol
I wished that they had animated the scene with the White Knight taking down the international missile massacre but hopefully the budget that was saved will be well deployed for the concluding episodes.
It’s a pity how Charuru seems to have reached her high point and is now being surpassed but, personally, I’m growing to like Cecilia more and more. I’m also glad that they didn’t show us her black undies – it’s even sexier when it’s left to the imagination rather than obscured by DVD/BD-pushing mist or reflected light.
You know, its totally possible that Tabane was behind both the White Knight incident and this incident. She wants to show off her new toy, and make someone she likes (Chifuyu, Houki) look good.
This would, of course, mean she’s totally batshit insane, but…isn’t that fairly obvious?

I think it’s more or less implied that the white knight was actually Chifuyu who was given an experimental suit by Tabane. I forgot to mention that in my original post.

I was kinda happy that Ichika was givin’ his Chifu-nee a massage since it finally solidifies how well they do get along instead of her being a straight-laced maniac. It was nice to see her relaxed and actually hanging out with her lil bro bro xD. Aside from the obvious the haremettes are being wasted but something will happen in the end, either now or in a 2nd or maybe even 3rd season.
