Haruka vs. Kaoru: Who’d You Rather? loading Loading ...

The team talked it over, and we thought we’d try a new feature with regular polls.  This was blatantly stolen from TMZ.

Halfadeckshort:

  • While Haruka appears to be quite the kinky one at first blush, she’s actually fairly conservative as she likes to keep her “private activities” private (in front of Hibiki doesn’t count). Kaoru, on the other hand, is the kind of girl who doesn’t mind getting a little “crab gratin” on her in public, if you know what I mean. Advantage: Kaoru
  • Haruka does have the apparel advantage in the pool (swimming) versus pool (shooting) match-up, but much like the “Santa Special” she only busts out the swim wear on certain occasions. Kaoru works the skirt and stocking combo every day. Advantage: zettai ryouiki er, Kaoru.
  • Sometimes, after a long hard day, you just want to get some sleep. Haruka seems like the kind of girl who would wake you up in the middle of the night just to talk, which could get old fast. Kaoru seems like the kind of girl who knows that it’s important to get a good night’s rest before engaging in strenuous activities, like bareback riding. Advantage: Kaoru.
  • Summary: while Haruka is undeniably cute, I just don’t think she measures up to Kaoru except possibly in terms of their three sizes in the ways that really count. Kaoru is the clear winner for me.

Hellomotto :

  • I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that, as a couple, Kaoru and Junichi are better by far. They seem much more natural and a lot closer, and the scene at the top of the building was a cute (though a tad forced). To put it one step further, they weren’t automatically married at the end; they remained a natural couple. Round goes to: Kaoru
  • However, that doesn’t count as much as what I myself actually prefer; and I have a general idea what I’m looking for. For me, I like someone who isn’t forceful, remains cute, yet doesn’t necessarily sacrifice intelligence. At the same time, I’d rather not be awkward with her. The latter criteria fits Karou perfectly, yet the former fits Haruka to the dot. In general, since the awkwardness would clear up afterwards, I’d prefer Haruka, who’s a bit more outgoing yet has her reservations. Round goes to: Haruka
  • As for the arc itself, there’s no comparison: Haruka’s arc is more consistent and develops better and at an excellent pace. Moreover, Haruka was fleshed out much, much more: she became a three-dimensional character, full of realistic doubts (for the most part) and desirable qualities. Round goes to: Haruka
  • Thus, my upshot consists of the following: 1) Kaoru and Junichi fit better as a couple, but 2) taking the arc as a whole, Haruka’s was much better, and overall I’d say that Haruka fits my type of girl more than Kaoru. Combining these, I’d say that, even though Kaoru and Junichi are a much better couple by far, Haruka wins by being “cuter,” less tsundere, and overall a better choice for me personally. Match Win goes to: Haruka

Zyl:

  • For me, Haruka wins knees down for being the channel of so many facets of Shizuka Itou awesomeness: Hinagiku pluckiness x Banjo no Carmel-san Wilhelmina wackiness x Akiha insecurity. If there was a missing spice I could add, it would be Tama-nee tsun tsun mode but Haruka has already surpassed all my expectations. Rina Satou did a great job as Kaoru but just not as excellent as Biri Biri.

Epi:

  • Haruka Positives:
    1. Wooooow!
    2. Super fun girl who likes doing fun crazy things.
    3. Public exhibitionist and not scared of it
    4. Rich (hey it never hurts!)
    5. Engrish speaker
    6. Ridiculous body and not afraid to show it off
    7. Super dedicated to her man even though she’s outta his league
    8. Lotta hot friends everywhere (and probably doesn’t care/mind when you ogle her swim club buddies)
    9. Every day is an adventure with Haruka
    10. Puts out… and how! (very important, especially since she’s a keeper!)
  • Haruka Negatives:
    1. So hot someone richer/more powerful/better looking may steal her away
  • Kaoru Positives:
    1. SEX HAIR
    2. Employable
    3. Down to Earth
    4. Liked her voice, but is no woooow!
    5. Mini-skirt buffet
  • Kaoru Negatives:
    1. Issues with her family
    2. Falls asleep instead of making out, that can’t bode well for the future…
    3. Boring, safe choice. If even the perverted best friend doesn’t lust for her in the anime world then in the “real life” version, she must be really plain and/or ugly
    4. Violent, and her punches actually hurt
  • I think it’s obvious who I’m supporting. Winner: HARUKA

Kabitzin:

  • Haruka appears to be the high-maintenance, high reward girl.  However, note that in 10 years you will not be getting that much role-playing and you won’t have any kids.  I can put 2 and 2 together (the answer, BTW, is foursome).
  • You will never quite be sure what you are supposed to do to prevent Haruka from breaking down into crazy girl tears.  At least if Kaoru’s bummed, it’s probably because she just found out about her mom’s super-hot night life.
  • I just want to point out that (if you are into that kind of thing) Kaoru’s situation represents a real chance to get with both the mom and the daughter for Jerry Springer-esque results.
  • While Haruka’s arc was definitely better than Kaoru’s, I think Haruka would annoy me pretty quickly.  Kaoru, I choose you!

Initial thought would be Kaoru, but then I thought that Haruka would give access to the real prize of Hibiki. Main characters are overrated anyway.

^ best reason I’ve ever heard to pick Haruka.

Kaoru’s arc felt a bit disappointing, but I still liked her character a lot more. It’s that hair, man~

Tough choice, but as superior as Haruka’s arc was I have to go with Kaoru. Haruka is just too much of an airhead sometimes. Though Kabitzin’s point about ’10 years later and no kids’ would be a plus in my book :P

Kaoru is just a lot more reasonable and not dependent on games or gimmicks. Plus it’s always a good rule of thumb to avoid The Crazy (or the potential Crazy anyway.)

Haruka’s the better hook-up, Kaoru is the better long-term choice.

It seemed to me that Haruka is easier summarize (air head, kinky, school idol, etc) while Kaoru is more of an enigma (playful, helpful, casual, family-oriented). I voted for Kaoru.

Are you going to do this for the next arcs too?

I don;’t even know who these girls are but I trust my first impression. Drill hair versus sex hair? Duh. Kaoru wins.

I think it’s funny how people make their choices, but I shan’t comment.

Team Kaoru all the way. And as a sidenote, let’s not use the term ‘ Team’ to describe our favourites. It makes it sound like fucking twilight.

No harem option ? boo.
If I need to choose who would live and die, I would choose Kaoru to live.

Haruka. She has a wider interest in different types of… you know, games, and that is always fun! I mean, Kaoru lost many points when she fell asleep as she was about to raep Junichi. But well, I guess I could choose either, but Morishima-sempai suits my tastes better

Aye I totally agree. That was a HUGE black mark for her. Chilling view of things to come… or not ha ha ha.

I’d Haruka…

Failing that, from what has been shown so far, Miya…

Haruka. She was adorably fleshed out throughout her arc and you can feel she’s a breathing person. On the other hand, the only thing about Kaoru I know is that she is Junichi’s hot-blooded friend. It can be different from Junichi’s perspective but what I saw didn’t make her more appealing to me.

Are we doing this kind of poll after every arc? You know, there’s four girls still waiting to be judged ;)

SirusRiddler August 26, 2010 at 4:01 pm

As much as I find Haruka absolutely adorable and refreshingly outgoing, I would find the potential clinginess really stressful. It’d be nice to have some room, yo.

Kaoru is a great mix of go-getter and enigma. Plus DAT HAIR. And it makes me wonder how things would be if I stayed more in touch with my own osananajimi. :/

So now we know why divorce rates are so high! A majority of people would rather go for the more exciting but less secure choice, which only works out about a third of the time… XP

BTW: There should totally be one of these polls at the end of the season involving all the heroines!

Reply

Shinmaru August 26, 2010 at 6:33 pm

And there should be an all of the above option.

I do like Haruka’s eyes, but I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up with her especially the role playing. And…I would like to have kids when I’m older, so I don’t want to sacrifice that. Kaoru is hard working, cute, and is pretty independent. A strong girl, that will probably give you that kick you need to get your spirit back. DefinitelyKaoru please!!!!!

PS Girls with hair reaching just to their shoulders is a plus for me!

I voted for Haruka, in that photo her skin has that delicious pink tint that I just melt all over. If I had it my way I’d pick both, but polygamy is illegal and women tend to get angry if you’re two-timing them.

Ha ha ha ^_^

As fling and dating material, Haruka is very hard to top. Bring her along on a vacation – at once! She’s got so much to offer and then some! But I wouldn’t have the confidence to be able to manage this bundle of joy for a lifetime. In that aspect, Kaoru is much more down to earth and “fitting”.

So, the answer is “depends on what you’re looking for” ;)

Aux armes, citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons!
Marchons, marchons!

Tanamachi loyalist here. I hold that she is the better character and hers is the better arc – both by virtue of substance – so I’d infinitely prefer someone like her as a friend, let alone as a partner.

With prior knowledge of some game info, I only planned to get into her episodes. (So to be honest, I’m judging the previous girl and her arc by hearsay, but then they just don’t appeal to me for reasons I’ll go into later.) More than anything, this was because of its close friends-becoming-lovers angle combined with her character/personality.

Her story appeals so much to me because of its permeating theme of support. Two very close friends being there for each other in good times and in bad is great. Realizing they’re in love with each other, only becoming even closer, is even greater. I only watched the first few minutes of the first arc and then watched her opening scene, and the contrast between the prologues is just uplifting. Likewise, episode 7 was, though my opinion be unpopular. I really felt for the two of them throughout, and she certainly felt fleshed out to me.

I find her personality stronger than that of the other friend character, who is cute on her own terms but is a little too airheaded and passive to make a good partner, for my taste. I like her the best of all because she’s aggressive yet grounded and tender, playful and supportive, etc. etc. A crisis brings out her vulnerability, but she has a friend to support her and help set her right. Who could not like that?

Attaining the unattainable girl appeals to a lot evidently, but not to me. The other romance options don’t do it for me either. I’m most moved by the prospect of falling in love with the close friend at one’s side and at one’s back, and I’ve already gone into why I like her better than the other friend. I believe these themes and her character lend her arc (more) substance and a stronger foundation than the previous one, and I dare say all the ones to come. Or at least, her story will (and already does) hold a special place in my heart like no others in the franchise can.

I’ve commented at length (too much) about issues people have with her arc (levels of fun, tone, pacing, etc.) under this name and others, on other sites (hi, Valence) and I find these are mostly just subjective. I find her arc is great at best and very good at worst once you accept it on its own terms, including the drama element that brings them closer than ever before.

Prior knowledge of game info was both good and bad because unlike some I knew what to expect, but then the show didn’t do things as cleanly as the game, including its ending sequence being truncated and censored. Too bad for that, but as Sean Connery says in First Knight:

“I take the good with the bad, together. I can’t love [...] in slices.”

And I do love this story, and this bro. Would that everyone had such… friends, at least.

Sorry for the length of my comment, but my studies involve a lot of writing. :-P

Valence and I have been having a fun discussion about the arc here:Amagami SS -was- demeaning to women; Kaoru renewed my faith in Amagami SS Just excuse my even longer posts and awkward formatting there. What can I do, I have an itch… You can also read my review of Kaoru’s arc on TV Tropes: Romantic love as a deeper friendship

Kaoru 200% I fell for her at first glance (During the title)
My reasons are:

1. Her hair OMG
2. She is outgoing
3. She is down to Earth
4. Marrying her is marrying your best friend.

She reminds me of my girl friend.

Kaoru. Sure Haruka is awesome and i liked her arc but kaoru’s arc was kind of interesting too, except the one that was all about her mom and stuff… She is good at teasing junichi, and its cute how shes always cuddling him as a joke. Shes also more outgoing when it comes to love, I cant really imagine haruka doing what kaoru did when she was pretending to be asleep then attacked him like that…
Bad friends rule :D
