Boss-type Bad Guys Prefer White

Unpacking Packy’s decision to go in on the basis of this key scene: White Camel’s order to kill the rabbit who attempted to run away is seriously bad news, a deliberate act of murder rather than a spontaneous outburst by an ill disciplined underling. Tired and bound and surrounded by militia, the runaway couldn’t have gotten far anyway. And the order was given with full awareness of it being recorded by the camel on the left. The prisoners were going to be killed soon, as part and parcel of the terrorists’ spectacle.

Lots of nostalgia from the good bad ole days of Full-time National Service (especially Basic Military Training and the trade courses) follows:

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 03

And it is inevitable that fujoshi will make furry yaoi doujins slashing us

I agreed with Botasky though: No f**kin’ way! A ratio of 2:15 is, not to put a too fine point on it, f**kin’ terrible especially since when the traditional force ratio for an infantry deliberate attack is 3:1. But then it helps that they are the Good Guys and oh so cute to boot. But on a more serious note, this is a hasty attack/raid, they are professional Special Forces types, have superior training and equipment as well as the element of surprise. So it is (just barely) gets a free pass.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 04

Did you hear something? No, I didn't fart!

It also helped that the enemy didn’t do itself many favours. The militia was pretty complacent given how they were spread out in the open street without any stand to positioning or prep. They were also badly trained. The first two camels who went down couldn’t really have done anything. The third camel’s first reaction was not unreasonable in braying (I presume): “Sniper!” before racking up another head shot for Botasky. But when it was under fire like that, cover and concealment should have been its first priority. You know, moving quickly towards the walls of the buildings rather than remain in the centre of the street. Or at least crouch or lay prone (and then leopard crawl) to reduce its profile. Which they did practice belatedly.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 05

Thanks for pre-gagging yourself

Movies like to show throats being slit rather than stabbed (no blood here though). But given how the camel was taller than Packy, I thought he would have gone for a kidney stab instead which is also pretty much instantaneous.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 06

I Kiss You

Packy taking down all four camels in the room without serious resistance was also believable to me; I managed something similar during a paint ball session years ago LOL.  Also helped that one was preoccupied with playing film crew and White Camel was preoccupied with posturing. The element of surprise (with Packy having sighted all his targets beforehand) is so important because, in general, human (ahem) reaction time is four seconds. *Bam* One thousand (first camel down) *Bam* Two thousand (second camel down) *Bam* (third camel down) *Bam* Four thousand (last one begins to raise weapon, aim not even acquired yet)

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 08

So do you want knee kissing or ramen first?

That one of the prisoners was a camel made the framing of the others as terrorists more plausible; otherwise it would be all too easy to think of this as some kind of genocidal rabbit vs. camel war. The designation of the prisoners as “canaries” was also interesting. The allusion to birds trapped in a cage. Or even spies who will, figuratively, sing like birds. The latter thought was triggered by the dialogue above (implying some sort of prior relationship between the canaries and CMS) and might also explain the viciousness of the camel militia towards them.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 09

V for Victory or was that two fingers up yours?

This scene was just the lulz – with Botasky’s upright bunny ears, it’s a wonder it took so long to spot him! I approved, right from the start, of how Packy reduced his profile by wearing that hat.

Kudos though to Botasky and Canary rabbit for the casualty evacuation of the Canary camel with just a two man stretcher team for one kilometre. Even a fresh four man team would have found it exhausting.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 10

Not the face! Not the face!!

Another beautiful moment, courtesy of Packy and camel grunt. Packy and grunt turn the corner, with weapons ready at standing shoulder position, and nearly crash into each other. In a moment of tragi-comedy, the grunt’s weapon was just above Packy’s head and couldn’t be brought to bear onto him from that angle.  Packy, with just a bit more forewarning and quicker reflexes, reached out with left arm while right arm continued to hold weapon and on trigger. Push comes to shove and the startled wide-eyed camel gave a cry of alarm and fell onto his back. Left arm went back to support weapon, sights levelled and trigger pulled. It’s over in a flash. So well choreographed. It also reminded me of the tunnel vision we sometimes got when advancing in that position and trying to keep the ring of the rear sight aligned with the tip of the forward sight and the added boo boo of closing one’s non-master eye while doing so.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 11

If this was Time Crisis, you could shoot this grenade

Four seconds for detonation seemed a tad short as I was expecting about seven. But I’m just basing on what we used to do yonks ago. Certainly the type we used wasn’t as round. Can’t even remember what its model/serial number was. Was Packy using an M67?

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 12

I shall call you... Clare

Initially thought that the placement of the M18 was too open and obvious but its position turned out to be perfect just before it was detonated.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 14

This does not stand for Role Playing Game

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 15

Cat yourself one

A really nice moment to show that Packy wasn’t invincible and to set up the scene for Botasky to come to the rescue. Man, everyone really really hates RPGs when you’re on the receiving end. Mostly because they’re so cheap and cheerful that there can be a whole bunch of them out there.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 16

Slice through anything easily phooey! This is the late time I believe 'em late night shopping channel claims! *Goes out with a BANG*

Surprising addition of the kukri knife into the mix though I doubt very much that if it would have been able to cut into the body of the rifle even if the scope wasn’t there. Camel was also being an idiot – after kicking Botasky and freeing his weapon, he wasted precious seconds screaming his battle cry before attempting to slash Botasky again. The reward, of course, was missing his chance and getting a few rounds put through him. Reminded me of Ibraha’s raving in Black Lagoon‘s Guerillas in the Jungle before Takenaka countermanded him.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 17

I just remembered I'm allergic to dust... and bullets

This brought back another particularly vivid memory from BMT wrt cover and concealment. Various things like uncompacted and compacted sandbags, wooden logs and even a reinforced concrete wall were subject to a few rounds of firing (M16 for most and GPMG for the last) after which we (the trainees) were brought to see the after-effects up close and to learn the relative endurance of various types of cover. One lesson was “that’s why we tell you to compact your sandbags, you compact your sandbags. And then compact them again.” The other was that nothing lasts forever against sustained fire and you need to keep moving.

By this time, Packy and Botasky have gotten themselves pinned down. But the saving grace was that, at least, they had reasonably good cover. Looks like solid masonry. But apparently even if it were mud brick wall, it would have been decent (please correct me if I’m mistaken).

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 18

Between some humps and a dry place

By this time, P&B no longer have surprise, their mobility is severely curtailed and the camel militia are finally able to use their superior numbers to lay down suppressive fire while advancing in an enveloping movement.

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 19

*Hums Airwolf theme*

Cat Shit One Impressions CSO01 21

Maybe they'll send Kanade Tachibana next time

And the air support arrives just in a nick of time to save the day as well as for P&B to turn the tables on the militia reinforcements. I was half-expecting it to be an AH-64 Apache but looks more like a MI-24 Hind which was another nice way to keep things mixed up and not associate the bunnies too closely with any particular RL military.

A thoroughly enjoyable episode with stunning visual effects, fight scenes and even hints of potential political nuance. Characters-wise, I disliked Packy’s bravado and Botasky’s whining but I really couldn’t argue with the former’s reasoning (when stripped of its macho adornments) or the latter’s initial FUD and I can see them growing on me.

Whatcha gonna do with all that hump?! I really enjoyed the battlefield choreography, even though nobody was wearing any pants.

But given how the camel was taller than Packy, I thought he would have gone for a kidney stab instead

See, you are thinking like a human. Where exactly are a camel’s kidneys, and are they protected by hump? Plus, look at the thin, long neck and the fact that rabbits are great jumpers. Seemed perfectly natural to me. I loved when Packy pushed that one camel over when there was a collision at the intersection. Damn these twig legs!

I think you have to blame the poor camel training for their loss. Running while shooting from the hip? Not using any of their RPGs at the end when they had Packy and Botansky pinned down? No tripod for the camera, for hands-free operation? N00bs!

I was surprised that Packy didn’t reveal Botansky’s punishment to be another tour of uke duty.

Strike Witches OTL I’m grateful that, at least, no one in CS1 was wearing pantsu.

Damn these twig legs!

And that high CG pear shaped upper body!

Running while shooting from the hip?

I seem to remember that running and then shooting from the hip (though stopping before) was the very last station of the 300m Advanced Trainfire Programme. The targets were less than 10m away by then but it wasn’t unusual for whole parties not to score a single hit. Shooting from the hip is so much less reliable than standing shoulder!

Packy didn’t reveal Botansky’s punishment to be another tour of uke duty

Probably just had to tango with him after that beer at Joe’s to the tune of the Blue Oyster theme…

With the way the camels were shooting, I’m surprised they even hit that first hostage.

Mushyrulez July 20, 2010 at 4:34 pm

I was watching this with my friend, and he kept on commenting on how there’s no blood at all.

Rewatching it closely, it’s true – there’s NO BLOOD AT ALL. Normally there shouldn’t be that much blood (cough cough HotD), but when you shoot multiple bullets straight at an enemy’s gut you have to expect that some blood comes out…

ETA on episode 2? There’s been a lot of weird rumours spreading around.

Viva bloodless violence! Apparently CS1 can overcome terrorists but not the terror of Japanese TV censorship conventions. This is a mission for WOWOW!

The trailer made it clear that the bunnies are PMCs, so it made sense for the air support to be a Hind. You can actually buy a Hind, but the US military choppers are not for sale.

But at the rate the US national debt is going and if those crafty bunny rabbits continue to save up, who knows? No point if it doesn’t come with Longbow though. :p

The surviving hostage rabbit’s name was Bowen (and BTW, Packi’s full name is Perkins).

Russian hand grenades are fused for 3s. BTW, a number of people got into a dangerous habbit of throwing grenades for GP-25, because they explode on impact and there is no danger that a quick-thinking enemy kicks them away or whatnot. You can easily cock (fuse) them by hitting them correctly upon your boot’s heel.

Did you notice that Packy was carrying a “battlefield pickup”-compatible 7.62 gun? An unusual choice, although may be sensible for a privateer. US SOCOM people used to get by with M-16s, but have their own rifle now.

Zyl July 21, 2010 at 2:17 am

Thanks!

A longer fuse certainly comes in handy in case a butter-fingered trainee drops his grenade in the throwing bay – there was quite a prominent case about two years back.

I had no idea about Packy’s weapon so thanks for the info. Also not sure about Botasky’s especially if Packy’s criticism about dead weight was really valid.

Also forgot to comment that it was pretty convenient that the camels didn’t have any SAMs to use against Angel One. And if their RPGs would have been useful against the air support.

I never had a chance to throw a live grenade. The training grenade had a standard fuse and holes in the case in order to prevent fuse blasting the case and creating shrapnel. It can be dropped almost safely. Fuse going off is a sizeable explosion and hearing is likely to be damaged. It’s not like the command babied us, more like not trusted, haha.

Bota’s gun is an M-1A or M-14 with a ton of accessories. It’s heavy to begin with, but it fires the big NATO 7.62 so can be used for sharpshooting.

DrmChsr0 July 21, 2010 at 10:57 am

Both rabbits are probably using FN-SCARs. Packy uses a CQC SCAR whereas Bota’s probably using a Long Barrel SCAR. (And how far was he from the city? About 500 metres?) The tacticool stuff and the scope marks it as a sniper weapon, though Bota’s probably the tacticool kind of rabbit.

Of course, the whole battle seems good and well until you realize… … …

They’re using Hollywood magazines. Unlimited bullets all the way.

Gene July 21, 2010 at 11:51 am

rofl, SCARs? Not even close… just look at Packy’s, the gun is completely and utterly M4 profile from quad-railed fore-end down to the Vltor stock, except for the MGI Hydra-style 7.62 receiver and AK mags.

Strider July 22, 2010 at 12:30 am

Just nitpicking… :]

But that’s an LMT Crane Stock and a Knight’s SR-47 receiver. Strange, seeing as to how only 7 were ever made, 6 going to USSOCOM and the last going to the KAC museum. But whatever. Perky is awesome, I don’t care.

I am an airsofter/gun/special forces nut and have been waiting for this since the first trailers dropped almost 1.5 years ago, and in all honesty, since the manga.

I was really impressed by the gunfight choreography, like Perky’s transitions and cross shoulder weapons manipulation.

Being that I’m a gear nut as well, I was especially pleased to see the realism in their tac gear and weapons accessories too… especially how Bota had a red dot piggybacked on top of his long range optics for the close-in stuff. Stuff like that makes my day… and I have to say, this single episode was loads better than what I’ve seen come out of Hollywood in the recent years. I really hope the next episode doesn’t come out in 2011 as some have claimed…

drmchsr0 July 22, 2010 at 9:39 am

Originally, I thought Perkins was using a HK416, but the buttstock threw me off.

Gene July 21, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Movies like to show throats being slit rather than stabbed (no blood here though). But given how the camel was taller than Packy, I thought he would have gone for a kidney stab instead which is also pretty much instantaneous.

A knife wound, instantaneous? And a knife wound to an organ that does not produce particularly immense bleeding or trauma to heart, brain or lungs, all of which are critical life-support organs? There’s a myth if there ever was one.

I can not think of a single case I have ever read about, seen, or even heard of where anyone was killed “instantaneously” with a knife, even after 10+ stab wounds in much more lethal places than the kidneys.

Just nitpicking sir.

Reply

Zyl July 21, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Yeah, careless wording on my part. Not so much instant death but getting the opponent to go into instant shock and thus incapable of combat or raising the alarm. It’s part of the whole head, groin, kidney drill.

Reply

Grey July 23, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Kidney stab was how Daniel Craig’s Bond instantly killed the Greek bombmaker in Casino Royale at Miami airport.

I don’t know how realistic that would be. Probably not very.

I also recall reading from Star Wars Republic Commando: Hard Contact (Karen Traviss’s only good book, IMO) that indeed, stabbing is a very slow and inefficient way of killing someone, particularly if you’re just swinging wildly in center mass.

They dropped hip shooting from the marksmanship test, but back then there was a technique involved which I got pretty good at…

Firing from a high alert position is a lot easier now with the new rifle (we don’t do weakside transitions though, thanks to the TSR) and various different sights (the EOTech is quite common now). The two USAGIs tactical movement were very good based on what little I know about current UO practices…

Weapons-wise, Packy is using a SR-47 and an STI M1911 type pistol (I thought it was a Kimber MEU(SOC) at first), while Bota has a “tacti-fool” Mk 14 EBR (an Aimpoint Comp M3 on top of a scope AND a AN/PEQ-2 laser?)…

BTW, Hinds are awesome when modernised with Western electronics (like Angel One was)…

Reply

Strider July 22, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Haha, never seen RDO piggybacked on top of magnified optics before? It’s a passable “oh crap, bad guy right in front of me” solution for people who choose to run magnified optics.

No PEQs anywhere, man, I do think that was a DBAL… Granted that was a bit overkill considering the timing of the op, but lessons learned from the Battle of the Black Sea seem to hold otherwise…

Well, I did my service in the same army Zyl spent his time in, and back in the day we ran around with vanilla M16A1s and if you were lucky maybe a 3x scope.

I’m a bit of a gear nut myself but I’m not too familiar with laser sights. Even with the new service rifles not everyone gets an EOTech or ITL MARS. Besides isn’t a Docter sight a better option than a Comp M3 if you have to put it on a scope?

How long before this is re-titled and shown in America on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim? Heck, they can even leave the title alone and show it after 1 AM.

I’m not into Japanese anime. I discovered this on a blog. The awesomeness is immeasurable.

I thought the injured hostage is a Kangaroo (Australian)? In the original manga, the nationality are:

Rabbit: American
Rats: English
Kangaroo: Australian
Chinese: Panda
Vietnamese: Cat
Middle Eastern: Camel

I haven’t seen the manga so thanks for the note. I’m not sure the English would be too pleased with their assigned animal race!

I’m pretty sure that the injured hostage in the movie was a camel. Or at the very least bovine and not marsupial (note the hooved feet):

Nah, the British 7th Armoured Division which fought in North Africa in WW2 and the Desert Storm are known as “Desert Rats”…

Anyways, thanks for sharing your impressions :D
