Nagi's dragon vs Ayumu's hamster was funnier
A Fairy Tale of Love, Courage and Superior Firepower
Summary:
Otohime runs into old classmate Mimi and the latter, sparked by a tussle over Toru, challenges the former to participate in the Ms Otogi Academy beauty contest. If Otohime wins, Mimi will have to stop calling her by her old nickname Turtle. It is a reminder of her past, as a slow, clumsy and chubby girl, which she has been working to overcome for the sake of being worthy for Taro.
Otohime takes a loan-favour from Otogi Bank so that she can get first place whereuon a vicious mud-slinging campaign is waged between Otogi Bank and Mimi’s supporters; both girls’ get more exposure but the negativity also drains their support. Ringo is also entered to split the lolicon vote (the other Otogi Bank girls are also entered for fun) but a foul-mouthed confrontation during the Zero no Tsukaima cosplay photo shoot ends up disillusioning the otaku fanboys and Mimi’s hitherto loyal defence force. After the swimsuit appeal segment, the votes are tallied and neither Otohime nor Mimi are in the top ten. In fact, Otohime has garnered only one vote (one more than Mimi) but realizes that Toru’s vote is the only one that really matters. After the credits, we learn that Ryoko also received only one vote – from Ryoshi, of course, who predictably gets socked when Ringo teases Ryoko about it.
Reaction:
And I actually thought this would be *the* series of the summer season -_-
I did not and still do not care about Otohime and/or Taro so this episode was pretty meh. But it was definitely an improvement over the bad vibes from Ryoshi’s creepiness last week. (I did wonder if Ryoshi’s dog-like begging for a taste of Ryoko’s omelette would have been funnier if it had not been utterly and completely upstaged by Junichi x Haruka’s antics in Amagami SS 03.)
The parody of the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare was also not as cleverly done as the link was much more tenuous and thus the subversion was much less effective – Otohime is no longer turtle-like and we were not shown the process of her slow and steady struggle, only the result. The prideful rabbit did experience her fall but while she was confident, she certainly did not slack off in her efforts. Instead her downfall came about from her falling into the trap (pun intended) set by Liszt which resulted in MAD which was a nice twist. What did interest me was how there was no saccharine, feel good ending were both antagonists were able to reconcile and become friends. Mimi was a thoroughly unsympathetic character – she is manipulative in the present and was manipulative even in elementary school. Worst of all, she’s a sore loser who blamed the voters for her loss. As such, it was possible for me to feel Good Job, Prez even though I didn’t actively support Otohime.
With respect to the voice talent, I liked how, in a departure from their typecasts, Rie Kugimiya played a non-tsundere loli while Aki Toyosaki also got Otohime’s ojousama-style and stalker mania right. While my expectations for this series continues to trend downwards I am, like Evirus, looking forward to the episodes when Otsu (Ayako Kawasumi) and Alice (Yui Horie) get their turns in the limelight and, of course, any screen-time for the real star of this series – Ryoko’s legs and boots:
Let's see if there will be any Back of the Knee kissing...

Trope/fetish of the season?
Yeah, I also had a hard time caring about the Rabbit vs Turtle fairy tale premise, and it didn’t help that neither character really behaved much like their animal. I actually got confused as to who was who during the course of the episode, and I’m generally a pretty difficult viewer for a story to lose. But it was redeemed a bit by Ringo having more screentime to provide some laughs and expand her personality. And the Kuroko narrator continues to be used effectively.
The show has some really good components, it just needs to deploy them correctly and tighten up the writing for the fairy tale of the week. Let us hope that next week is better.
It’s one of those things that can now never be unseen.
I had such high hopes for this series because, as you said, it has some really good components but I was warned that the source material is not promising so let’s just hope JC Staff will be able to pull a (non-Mimi) rabbit out of a hat.
Ayumi’s hamster can upstage that brat’s dragon anytime.
I meant Ayumu – sorry for the typo. Sadly for the poor dear, her hamster reminded me of Ebichu.
Really? I thought this episode was the best so far. The story was touching for me, like how Otohime worked hard and got what really mattered in the end despite being bullied in elementary school.
Hai, hontou ni. I probably would have been more sympathetic if I had been shown (rather than just being told about) how Otohime worked hard (with Taro’s support).
Clearly YMMV – thanks for explaining why you enjoyed this.
Somehow I ended up feeling more amused by the Loli Chara war instead of the Rabbit vs Turtle one. Loved how Ringo pranced over and stabbed Mimi in her ego gut after the contest despite not being part of the central dispute herself lol. Oh and manual foul language censoring has never been better. ^^
Kuroko Censor Beeping was excellent! This may be the start of another AraiArai trend.
I also screencapped Ringo’s gloating and now have an excuse to post it (once I get home). Thanks Dav!
Ah, Loli Chara Battle makes me nostalgic for abq’s Loli Battle.
is there any comparative similarities to what happened in the 3rd episode of amagami ss?
anyway, it really made me wonder if people will then start kissing the back of the knee as a sign of fetish-ish type of liking?
Actually EO has already posted on how (front of) knee kissing (as well as other similarities) had already been observed in a prior instance of Kimi Kiss.
I don’t think that Kimi Kiss had as much impact though. Why not?
moral lesson of this ep: never provoke
evillolisNot unless you also have your own pet evil loli for the counter-counter-attack!
Episode is great for Kugimiya fags. Nothing is better than seeing her lose.
Somehow I’m able to stand Toyasaki in this anmie because of the flashbacks.
Anime still dumb as ever though.
Am I only the one who got Baby Bonnie Hood vibes from Ringo? If no one knows who she is you are all casuals.
Yeah Ringo definitely gave me a B. B. Hood vibe , particularly from her powered up aura form with all the guns in Zyl’s screenshot above. Saying that her creepy hooded silhouette face also reminded me of Taokaka from Blazblue, which is if anything an even better game. Go lolis!
Thanks for explicating on the reference, Shin. I have to admit I’m not a gamer so while it seemed vaguely familiar, I couldn’t put my finger on it. Also thanks to fathomlessblue, I was thinking exactly the same thing (J159 told me about Totali’s avatar) but I couldn’t remember the name of the game or the chara.
this is a great anime considering the clumsiness of morino ahaha.. really makes me laugh and excited at the same time lol.. cool anime.. been waiting for this one a long time ago
one of the best anime release summer 2010
I COMPLETELY agree with you on how Mimi was an annoying, unsympathetic character, and her sore loser aspect was probably the most annoying thing about her, aside from the fact that she was a brat -.- Nice review =)
Hey if u don’t mind, I have some similar opinion-based posts on my anime blog if you wanna check em out.
