She's heading up the / Reforestation effort: / Bringing wood to all.

Summary The dirty dirty truth:

Highschool of the Dead 02 hotd 02 01b

Blunt instrument kill: / Zombie bites can't compete with / Sting of rejection.

Knowing that he doesn’t stand a chance with Saya, Kohta decides to take out his pent-up frustrations by nailing some zombies behind the wood shop. Things are going well until Saya decides she wants to drill other people too, but the resulting bodily fluids get under her contacts and she’s forced to call a time out. At the same time, Rei and Takashi decide that it’s no fun beating a dead friend horse, and open themselves up to the world of water sports. Though Takashi initially has trouble handling his hose, he soon gets his spray under control and knocks the zombies down the stairs with the force of his blast. Rei tries to call her father to share her exploits, but is disappointed because Takashi’s 2G phone can’t handle talk and sexts at the same time.

Meanwhile, Saeko rescues Shizuka from the boring guy she was with (who was such a bad lay that she can’t remember his name) and takes her somewhere a little less clinical for a bit of rough undressing. As they’re trying to get into the mood, however, their activities are interrupted by the sound of Kohta’s mechanical nailing and Saya’s frustrated screams, and go to tell the two that they’re doing it wrong. All three groups meet in the hall and though they’re a little nervous at first, they have so much fun engaging multiple partners that they decide to take their show on the road.

Clean version: Saya and Kohta head to the wood shop for some improvised weapons, while Rei and Takashi use a fire hose to clear the zombies off the stairway to the observatory. At the same time Saeko rescues Shizuka, and the three groups converge at the trophy case before they head to the faculty room for Shizuka’s car keys. Realizing that they all won’t fit in her compact car, the gang opts to commandeer the school bus for a trip to go check on their families as a news broadcast has confirmed that the zombie outbreak is not confined to the area around the school.

Reaction:

I thought the last episode laid it on pretty thick with all the fanservice and sexual innuendo, but this episode definitely upped the ante with all the nailing, drilling, and spraying (the scene with Takashi and the hose reminded me of the gas station scene from Zoolander for some reason…), not to mention Shizuka using her breasts as a wrecking ball and Saeko’s obviously brilliant eye for fashion. While some may be put off by all this, I find the show terribly amusing, and hope it continues to provide a good fanservice/action mix. My favorite parts this time around were the hurt look that Ishii threw Shizuka when she couldn’t remember the name of her human shield, and the look Kohta had on his face when he realized that Saya is a meganekko: I can’t wait till he tries to put the moves on her.

Taking the show seriously for two seconds, it was interesting to see Saya’s superior front crack so soon under the pressure of dealing with the zombies on a physical level. As long as she can keep her distance and catalogue their characteristics she’s fine, but when it comes to shoving a drill (or a jackhammer, as the Foley crew would have you believe) into a zombie’s brainpan, she’s just not on the same level as the others. While it was obvious that Saya was interested in Takashi in the first episode, this episode makes her interest that much clearer, from her wishing that Takashi was there instead of Kohta, to her extremely pointed (jealous) remarks toward Rei. I’m sure this is just the edge of her insecurity and jealousy, and though she wasn’t comfortable killing the zombie, she still defended herself when backed against the wall (or, the trophy case). I’m expecting her to make a play for Takashi soon, weapon in hand (even if I don’t think much of her long-term chances).

As for the others, Takashi and Rei seem to have fallen into a decent rhythm while zombie smashing, though they still get a bit mopey every time the sound of crushing bone reminds then of Hisashi; and Kohta totally manned up once he got his hands on some power tools. Saeko’s willingness to step up and deliver a coup de grace was a nice contrast to Takashi’s failure in the last episode, though her slight smile at the destruction of the zombies looks like a hint of something darker within her. And though Shizuka is quickly becoming the fanservice focus (panty shots were down nearly 60% this episode, though boob jiggle was up 45%), she is at the very least good zombie bait, as she’s too ditzy to panic in the face of overwhelming zombie odds.

And I wouldn’t be much of a fanboy if I didn’t say that I’m enjoying Miyuki Sawashiro as Saeko, but all of the voice acting seems pretty solid (unless you count that mis-cast power tool) and Yukari Fukui’s exasperated tones over the destruction of Shizuka’s brand name dress were particularly fun this time around, as was Eri Kitamura’s voicework during Saya’s breakdown. Though we’re only two episodes in (and though there’s still several minutes of show after the credits), I’m still disappointed when the credit sequence starts. I’m looking forward to more inane fun next week, and I’m hoping that Shizuka drives better than she walks… or their bus ride is going to be a short one indeed.

I always wanted to be the handler of a hot all-girl spy team, and joining Sea Slugs! made that dream come true. Well, the being part of a team portion of the dream, anyway. When I'm not busy trying to accomplish the rest of my goal, I enjoy watching anime from almost every genre with a focus on anything featuring sultry female voice acting or meganekko.

The sound experiment and the ease with which Saeko pushed aside the zombies made me think that this outbreak could be very easily controlled with simple video game tactics:

- Place noise maker at end of long, narrow hallway
- Place killing machine just before noise maker
- Activate both devices

Saya was pretty annoying this episode, with all her complaining, but I suppose she was freaking out and in a bad mood. The idea of a nail gun working on the zombies seems cool but not super-logical, unless it only takes a small amount of brain damage to disable the zombies.

I greatly enjoyed Shizuka’s battering ram boobs and also her rejection of Saeko’s false dichotomy with respect to fashion and survival. Better leave a tip, Saeko, ’cause you just got served!

So, clowns with squeaky shoes and giant hammers? Who says clowns aren’t scary?

Saya was pretty annoying, and kept attracting zombies with all her outbursts, but she’s got good drama potential. I’m hoping she gets stabby toward Takashi at some point (if I didn’t make that clear earlier). And you’re right about the whole nail gun thing being a bit suspect, because it’s obvious that the zombies aren’t using a good portion of their brains. While the nail gun kills rack up style points, they just wouldn’t be practical without multiple nails per zombie.

LOL @ false dichotomy. Though Shizuka could just skirt the issue by wearing brand name lingerie instead….

I always love it when overly curious and/or clueless reporters get chomped up so that last scene showing how the outbreak is not just confined to the school’s surroundings was a bonus.

Also liked how it hinted that the Self-Defence Forces may be dancing to a different tune from the police and the rest of the government. Saya and Kohta’s conversation had a little civil-military relations primer about how the SDF cannot mobilize without the orders of the full Cabinet contrasts with how, in the previous episode, we already saw their Black Hawks in action even though the outbreak seems to be at an early stage and the mass media is reporting it as mass rioting.

Hahaha… that reminds me of the first episode of Bund when one of the disguised maids was interviewing the cat. I totally thought that thing was going to take a swipe at her….

/mostly off-topic

Rereading the comments on the Summer Preview post this morning, it looks like there might be an actual political angle in the manga. It’ll be interesting to see if they play that up or if the Black Hawks were simply appropriated by survival-minded servicemen.

Reporters getting killed is way too cliche now. I mean, seriously, what’s the chance that right when you turn on the TV, a reporter dies? Same with Takashi seeing the teachers get pwnt. Honestly, what’s the chance? Sure, it gives you knowledge that “oh, zombies are here”, and “oh, zombies are AROUND THE COUNTRY!”, but using something like that and simply saying “Oh yeah, did you know, zombies are all over the place” have the same meaning >_>

I bet a reporter from a competing network was filming the eaten reporter and getting his/her big break!

Great episode, I’m really loving this show. Would be even more awesome if Shizuka used her breasts to bash some zombie heads.

I am partial to all pink haired girls, so I will give Saya the benefit of the doubt. Even more points now that it’s confirmed she’s a closet otaku (from her zombie movie knowledge) and also a megane girl as well!

Can’t happen because her breasts are too soft lol. I don’t think Shizuka will get a combat role anytime soon, although at least she keeps her composure (or is too ditsy to react) unlike Saya.

You could probably make a decent shiv out of her underwire though, as whatever is keeping those things supported has got to be some sort of materials engineering marvel.

Have to agree with everyone that thinks Saya was annoying, but guess shes in panic mode so has to do something to keep calm. But hopefully she doesn’t stay that way to long, great voice work so far makes me wonder how many screams they had to record xD

Saya is believable but she’s going to get them killed if she doesn’t get her outbursts under control. Maybe Takashi just needs to smack her around a little….

I guess that depends on your definition of “worthwhile.” I’m finding the lack of huge depth this season to be a bit refreshing as I’ve been in the mood for some summer fun and the current line-up is delivering that in spades.

It’s also the summer of the undead, apparently.

Fuck the summer ! I live in the southern hemisphere which means it is winter for me, and i want more quality anime and less K-ON anime. got it ?! ;)

Saeko is such a win, I would love to see her yandere side (a bit at least) and Kouta go crazy with the nailgun and make Ikkaku GAR sounds.
