Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 01

What the heck? No speaking parts for RAN FAN? I eagerly await the Ran Fan spinoff sequel

Summary:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 02

"What I would like though is a Spanish peanut... Skin?"

The final episode of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood brings us to the extended epilogue. The episode starts off with Dr. Knox showing up to visit Roy Mustang. Now in charge of the East, Mustang has made it his goal to reconciliate with the Ishbals by restoring their homeland. He figures that only by restoring their trust could he ever become the king. Knox then reveals that Dr. Marcoh has tagged along, and armed with his Philosopher’s Stone made with Ishbal souls, he uses it to restore Roy’s sight, but not before restoring Havok’s severed spinal cord. Meanwhile at the Armstrong house, we see that Scar has been saved for the purpose of cooperating with Miles and his project of putting Mustang’s plans in Ishbal into action. Scar considers himself dead yet again, and with that even his name of Scar no longer applies, as he is now nameless.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 03

I like how Al now dresses exactly like his dad... even has the same chin.

We then go to the Elric brothers who are traveling home. Sporting a new haircut and a giant chin, Al travels with a cane, weakened by his atrophied body which was previously beyond the gate. As the brothers walk, they recall their final meeting with Lin, RAN FAN and May Chang as Lin states his intention to become emperor but also to take care of all the clans including May’s. Finally they reach the Rockbell residence. Hearing her dog Den start barking, Winry realizes something is up and walks outside to find Ed and Al returned at last as they have a tearful reunion.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 06

They finally reached the same height!

Fast forward two years later. Ed has rebuilt the house that his father made and that he burnt down. After reaffirming that his alchemy powers are truly gone, he’s greeted by his younger brother, now exactly the same size as he is (although still with a girly kid voice). As the brothers look toward the horizon, they both acknowledge that there’s something more that needs to be done.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 04

Mommy why do I have a nipple on my head?

Meanwhile, Selim has now grown from a tiny fetus into a little boy under the mothering of Mrs. Bradley. Seemingly innocent, he is under constant guard just in case. We also learn that Grumman has now been elevated to the position of Fuhrer, while Olivier is still in the north and Mustang is in the east.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 07

AWWWW! Too bad we didn't see them kiss!

Al meets up with the Hughes’ once again before setting off to find Jerso and Zampano. Al has decided to visit Xing and the East to learn more of the world and of eastern alchemy and the chimeras are accompanying him in hopes of finding a method to regain their original bodies. Meanwhile Ed has decided that he will visit the west to learn more about the other half of the world. After a teary farewell, Ed finally confesses to Winry in his own way and she reciprocates her feelings as well as she watches the man she loves go on his long journey.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 09

That mustache is most unfortunate

As the credits roll, we learn about the fate of everyone else. Hohenheim has been buried next to his beloved Trisha, Den’s managed to score himself a bitch, Lin Yao is now emperor with Ran Fan looking on, Yoki’s joined the circus as a clown with Darius and Heinkel in tow, with his eyesight intact, Roy has no excuse for his new mustache, while Riza’s hair has been shortened once again, Izumi is still as crafty as ever, Fuery is an even bigger radio nerd, Havok and Breda fight for Riza’s friend’s affection and Falman’s back in the north. And finally…

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 64 [Final] FMA2 64 010

Note May Chang's massive uh... hair bun yes.

Looks like Ed’s now a father twice over with Winry, and Al has finally grew taller than his older brother.

Reaction:

From the little extra animation at the end of Gundam SEED Destiny, to the full episode treatment at the end of Infinite Ryvius, it’s always nice to have a solid epilogue whenever you have such a long series with so many characters and so so much that happened, and as such episode 64 did not disappoint. If there was one disappointment it was the completely shotty animation that was featured in this episode, although I guess they blew the entire animation budget in the past few episodes, and this was not exactly an action packed episode. Still it would have been nice to end of the series without having characters looking different every other scene.

It looks like every single loose end was tied up. We learn that Roy and Olivier are still running in contention to become the next fuhrer, while Grumman (who basically did nothing the last 10 episodes) managed to gain the seat he so coveted and plans to keep for a long while yet. We learn the Pride is truly the only Homunculus left alive, as he’s now managed to grow into a toddler, although no precautions are spared as he’s still under constant surveillance.

Meanwhile it was heartwarming to see the Elric brothers return home and to finally see Winry again, this time with most of their original bodies intact. I enjoyed the timeskip, especially seeing Ed decide to rebuild his house (or is he just fixing up Winry’s house?) and for him to reminisce about his missing powers two years down the road. In a way it was a bit sad to see what he lost, but then to see that he managed to shrug it off shows just how much of a great character he really is.

I am not exactly sure if it was a translation error in the sub or if I’m misunderstanding something but I’m not totally sure why the brothers said that they were both “wondering about something for a long time” while they were on the roof. I took it to mean that they wanted to see more of the world and learn of it’s secrets instead of staying still at home, but I wonder if there’s something else I’m missing here. It was interesting to see Al grow to be his brother’s height and in the end look even taller than his brother who remains a shorty to the end (note Ed’s height difference with Winry does not change much). One wonders if Al will end up looking exactly like Hohenheim when he grows up.

It was really nice to see Ed finally confess to Winry in his own way, and to see Winry respond with such a sure declaration of love. With the brothers now deciding to traverse the wider world by themselves, one wonders if this opens up FMA to many more sequels and side stories, although I would wonder if Arakawa would really want to keep writing more after 10 years.

Finally, as a full episode wasn’t long enough to fully encompass what happened to everyone, it was good to see the montage of photos at the end. The second to last photo of Ed and Winry as parents, with Al taller than his brother and with new grown up babe May Chang really managed to tie everything up nicely. Of course the episode doesn’t end there as the last and final image of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is that of Ed going on his travels. Will his kids grow up to hate him as much as he hated his own father for leaving? Will they grow up to do even greater things?

It was a great way to end the series, and I for one enjoyed it immensely.

P.S. Please note, I will be making a final series review in a day or two, so this episode review will end here.

As a huge fan of all things mecha, high school and tsundere, I've been writing for SSAB! since the summer of 2009, although my love of anime spreads through all genres. I'm not as witty as some, but I aim to bring comprehensive and well-written anime reviews out there for you all out there to enjoy!

Loved the review as always  The Hero reference was awesome -saw it coming – but still awesome. I think Al does look more like his dad than Ed even (but the anime made it seem more so than the manga) and I think Ran Fan had no lines cause her VA wasn’t there :( she did have lines in the manga chapter.

The Rez trio glomp was way better in the manga

Ed was fixing the Rockbell house

Hey, hey that was a proposal not a confession! Okay, so I have no real grounds to base this on except that it seems pretty obvious to me (and Winry’s wearing Ed’s jacket)

The tache is indeed unfortunate, wasn’t in the manga

And as you can see some things are different preferable in the manga about that last family photo >_>

That’s Hayate’s bitch and puppies, not Den’s :D (also, I think Den’s a girl…)

I don’t know if the wording here makes it any clearer

And while we’re at, linking you to the manga 50 times over, why don’t you go ahead and read the whole chapter? ;)

And did you not hear?!? There’s going to be an FMA:B movie! What about I have no idea.

Argh, why the hell did they add the mustangche?!?!?!

Reply

Ranfan-fan July 5, 2010 at 5:58 pm

No, why the hell is this movie going to be live action!?!?!

The horror of Mustang’s mustache pales in comparison!

rei July 5, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Why don’t we all just pretend that Ed drew the ‘stache on Roy’s pic for lolz? Because that’s what I’m doing and I’m sticking to it! It’s the only way to stave off the nightmares. XD

Keith July 18, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I think the reason why they added the mustache to Mustang was because all he was doing the entire series was ultimately find Maes Hughes’ murderer. Maes had his mustache and was there at the beginning during the Ishvalin War of Extermination. And by the time he achieved his goal of leading the country, he couldn’t forget Hughes. I guess this way, after all was said and done, Maes would still be with Mustang even in death. Best explanation I could come up with.

Ahhh maybe I’ll read the manga now that the show is finished. I remember I spent two super boring days reading the Death Note manga a while back and that was about 100 chapters.

Ran fan did have some lines in the final Manga chapter and there were some minor changes you should read the final chapter also

 :( its over but they are apparently making a movie to fallow it up

Apparently it’s going to be a live-action movie. It hasn’t been officially announced but someone said at some convention in France that it was? I’m a bit foggy with the details. But the source seems to have been pretty legit.

Still holding my breath hoping it will turn out to just be a rumor.

It’s a pity Nana Mizuki (Lan Fan’s VA) wasn’t around, since she’s the one who asks Ling in the manga to treat the other clans fairly after he becomes Emperor, though I suppose since the part where Dr. Knox (after his own Ishval flashback) tells her and May that he doesn’t want to see kids killing each other was cut out, Bones couldn’t find another way to make that scene work. Plus she has a pretty touching scene where she tells her grandfather’s body that they’re finally going home.

And my god the Mustangche! I figure it was an early storyboard that Arakawa sent to the animators before she had finalized chapter 108, but still, you think they could have removed that after the issue came out. Then again, it looks like a mustache is a requirement for being Fuhrer (Bradley, Grumman, yeah).

Paninya’s a :3! Get in the car!

So Scar is Jet Li. That’s awesome.

ROFL at Roy Mustache. If it gets longer, it’s gonna look just like Yoki.

Jokes aside, I love how Scar has truly completed his character development. We see now that he has come full circle and that the last shot of him is back in Ishvalan traditional clothes, which I assume means he’s gone back to being a monk like he originally was. I also see he’s taking after Miles when it comes to hairstyling, haha.

Seriously Selim, what’s with the bulls-eye on your head. Is that to give Grumman’s men a convenient target if you flip out and become shadow demon again?

Speaking of which, I thought it was both funny and awesome that Grumman got to become Fuhrer after all. This guy has the highest potential, even more than Roy, for a presidential sex scandal in the works when he’s caught slapping an intern’s ass…

I’m gonna assume RAN FAN’s lines were cut because Nana Mizuki was not available to record. Her eighth album Impact Exciter comes out on Wednesday (OMG CAN’T WAIT), and I imagine that’s keeping her occupied.

A great end to an incredible series. I’ll keep my ears open for news of DAT MOVIE, but I’ve already heard that neither Irie nor Mizushima will be in charge of it, so we’re gonna see a new staff.

I think Grumman being fuhrer was just logical. I mean Olivier and Mustang would have fought eachother forever for that place, but they are still mid-level guys in the army. Grumman’s been there forever and is a mentor to Mustang so perfectly acceptable to all. Besides, he’s old so that gives Roy and Olivier some time to gain more notoriety before they become fuhrer.

Aside from that, has anyone noticed winry bitching about ed’s automail when they were waiting for the train ? This didn’t became clear, as i thought ed chooses everything back when he traded his portal in exchange for his brother’s body, so his leg should have came out in the surplus.

They also don’t explicity shows if his leg is an automail or a real leg, that’s why i’m on doubt about it.

Reply

Karla July 5, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Eh… no, he never got his leg back. Remember he sacrificed his arm to get Al’s soul attached to the armour. When Al transmutes his own soul the initial payment was given back to Ed. That means, his arm, but the leg, that was the payment for the human transmutation was never gotten back from the door.

Reply

Captain Guest July 5, 2010 at 10:37 pm

Yeah, in the manga, Al pretty much tells Gracia that Ed has no intention of getting his leg back.

Reply

Ranfan-fan July 5, 2010 at 11:31 pm

Oh no, you’re right. Winry was just delusional thinking Ed still had automail and that’s why he was pretty much ignoring her.

Truth did say Ed could “take it all” and Al said that Ed chose to keep his leg. As a reminder of the wrong he’d done…and because Winry would be upset if she didn’t get to work on it *cue the awwwws*

Mommy why do I have a nipple on my head?

ROTF LOL :)

Yeah this was an awesome series!
Is it me or the ending in the anime was slightly different from the manga…
I dont recollect Havoc using Marcoh’s stone to cure his legs….
Plus as Ranfan-fan said it was “Hayate’s bitches” ;)
And Mustang’s fans are seriously gonna get pissed after seeing the mustache I bet!!

And WTH? They played Hologram for the ending theme!!
That song really sucks…thats my least favorite of the OP/ED of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood…
I was expecting something like Let it Out or Tsunaida Te….even Ray of Light would have been fine….some disappointments in the end -_-

Epi July 6, 2010 at 2:14 am

I agree. Using male j-pop is just a bad idea altogether. Let it Out was great!

Reply

Ranfan-fan July 6, 2010 at 3:02 am

I agree as well. Hologram was always my least favorite. I would have loved Let it All Out or Again (my favorite OP and ED).

But really, now that I’ve thought about it. Hologram does fit the best, in the sound and how upbeat it is, as well as the lyrics.

How naive of me to consider myself an anime fan. You guys are the real fans. Every bit of details I failed to take note of.

Great review!

I grew up with older anime, Gundam 0080, 0083, Slayers, RoLW, etc. And I can’t keep up with the new stream of anime.

I watched the last two episodes this morning (I skipped last weeks episode). I guess this is my new favorite anime. (Death Note was before FMA:B) It kind of feels awkward that there’ll be no FMA anymore, after over a year of eagerly awaiting the next monday (sometimes even watching it streaming on sunday). On the other hand, I’m glad it ended, dragging it on for much further without a decrease in quality would be rather hard. It was a superb ending, like a superb anime deserves. 10/10

There is one plot thread the epilogue leaves hanging: Does Al ever go through puberty? Can’t keep Rie Kugimiya’s voice forever!

Maybe they’ll bring back Aaron Dismuke for grown-up Al in the English Dub?

By the way, I totally called that Aaron will be cast for young Hohenheim way back when Brotherhood was still in the single-digit episodes  /shameless gloating ;P

Tommy Vercetti July 7, 2010 at 1:06 am

Ed is the one who looks more like Hohenheim. Al looks more like Trisha.

Good job but I have one small correction. It was Black Hayate that scored the girlfriend, not Din.
