Working!! 13 (Final)

Zyl on June 28, 2010 · in Working!! Season 1

There are no coincidences, only destiny (as a trap)

Summary:

How unwise...

Souta turns up for his date with Mahiru as Kotori; Aoi had, accidentally-on-purpose, spilt water on him and Hiroumi had prepared woman’s clothes for him to change into. A small consolation is that Jun prevents the gang from tailing them by bribing Poplar with food and Aoi with clothes shopping (at Hiroumi’s expense). Maya Matsumoto, and her struggle to maintain her identity as a normal person, is finally introduced. After a close call, Souta realizes that cross-dressing has its advantages; Mahiru is less likely to hit him and he can freely indulge in cute things.

Mahiru is pushed to her limits when Souta, trying to gauge her progress, asks her to hold his hand. Three attempts are successively interrupted by cute puppies, a stray frisbee and rain. Horrified that he is starting to think of Mahiru as a good girl and thus breaking his minicon mould, Souta reasons to himself that Mahiru is just a dog. Which she overhears but violence is averted when he tries to explain that she is (a) cute (but vicious dog) with Mahiru being struck dumb by the preceding unbracketed part of the aforementioned.  Back at work, everyone quickly settles back into their usual patterns; Mahiru, Souta and Poplar troop out to greet the latest customers.

Reaction:

Lower... lower... more tongue pressure...

Aoi and Hiroumi, good job! A very warm welcome back for Kotori-chan!!  A bit surprising that none of the NPCs that they met realized that Souta was a trap, especially given how he spoke with his normal voice and used the very masculine ‘ore’ pronoun. Oh, it would have been great if someone had commented about how they look like a yuri rabu rabu couple. But I suppose my only real gripe was I would have liked to have seen more extreme Kotori Fascination by Poplar. Jun was also outstanding with the way he singlehandedly foiled the plan to follow Souta x Mahiru and how the plan also involved handing out a JPY 50,000 (USD 500) fine to Hiroumi while also being able to enjoy teasing Poplar by ordering the kid’s lunch set for her.

The late introduction of Maya was also well executed and was fitting given how she refused to socialize with everyone else in an effort to maintain her sense of normalcy. But the paradox is that, in the long term, being the only relatively normal person in a group of lovably not normal people makes one feel out of place. And, of course, in the battle between DORAMAZ and normality, it’s hard to see how the docile grazers can stand a chance.

On the Souta x Mahiru front, it was lovely to see how thoughtful Mahiru was – bringing Souta to the toy shop so that he could enjoy the cute stuff that he normally wouldn’t be able to if he was unaccompanied by a girl. I also liked how Mahiru is starting to break through to Souta. Even though he realized it and tried to rationalize it away, for the first time, I felt there was a possibility – however minute – that he may, one day, be able to reciprocate her feelings. And not just as canine trainer. But given how the characters and their dynamics have been set up, I expect that any progress will be painful(ly slow). But as Mahiru has noted, she has made progress – the average number and power of her punches has dropped and she has been able to have more normal conversations with Jun and Hiroumi. I still really like the possibility of this pairing, partly because it was so surprising and how it brings out the best in the both of them and hopefully the best is still to come. Second season?

And there I was thinking that 'frisbee' was some kind of sex position...

Chain Reaction:

There’s certainly the possibility of self-selection effect here since bloggers who really disliked the series would have not lasted all the way to the end with it:

  • Aroduc observes how “unlike a lot of shows this season, this got markedly better for awhile after a very rocky and poor start. I’m placing that firmly on the shoulders of Yamada though” – interesting how Aoi, despite not having much screen-time, managed to partially cancel out his dislike of the show (mainly centred on Mahiru).
  • kluxorious lists, as a con, how Souta as Kotori x Mahiru makes them lesbian; surely that must be a pro! ;-)
  • Kurogane gives this series the high praise of having consistency and balance; earlier on, I would not have disagreed with his cry for MOAR Poplar but, post-Kotori Fascination, I find that Poplar Time for Poplar Cuteness’ sake just doesn’t cut the mustard anymore. Her perpetual cheeriness has actually threatened to make her less interesting so I would love to see more of that darker side of her which ruthlessly uses her cuteness to try to get more of what she wants (i.e. Kotori).
  • NovaJinx calls “weaksauce” on the ending but is looking forward to owning the DVDs – overall “the strong point of the show lies definitely in its male characters and the clever use of romance elements to build up a rather hilarious farce”; the latter observation is a great insight for me since I have been privileging the romance over the humour but this points out how oft-used and cliched odd couple dynamics have been brilliantly employed in the context of Working!!

I have a penchant for Bishoujo, Oneesama and Yuri character dynamics. Genre-wise I enjoy drama and satire; tilt-wise I am terribly weak against self-consciously arty farty styles and reference humour. Sieg Lunamaria!

The show was great, until the last episode. Seems like they hyped everyone up with the date, and then threw in an open ending which solved absolutely nothing. Hopefully the open end was to set up for season 2.

The problem is, according to both Vexx and Karice67, that’s exactly how the date happened in the manga. Except with less Souta over-reacting about the crack in his mini-con facade, and a more subtle realization that Inami CAN be cute.

Like fathomlessblue, I had no problems with how the date turned out – in fact, I was very pleased and surprised that Souta didn’t even get hit once. The close calls and the remaining difficulties were reasonable since it’s not likely that neither could change their personalities so quickly. As Myssa Rei has pointed out, the movements and realizations have been subtle and faithful to the manga – which I think is promising should there be a second season.

I never expected the Souta x Mahiro relationship to be resolved in any way so I had no problems with the end. The comedy was gold as usual, one of those rare shows that gets funnier as it settles into its set formula. Souma and Yamada stole this ep with their cross dressing scheme. I love how clever they think they are when in reality they’re about as subtle as a snake. The scene at the beginning with Mahiro excitedly running round her room was also executed and animated extremely well.

This series definitely needs a second series. Its been a weird season with shows like this and Angel Beats given too few episodes while K-on!! and Maid-sama! too many. Ah well Arakawa has (thankfully) been green lit for a second season so hopefully there’ll be hope here too.

The production committee normally has the final say on episode allocation though, and as a 4koma adaptation half a cour was probably a safe decision.

That said… Working has still four more volumes worth of material, and we’ve been made aware over at Asuki by people who actually BOUGHT the tankobons that the anime deliberately skipped more than a few chapters to focus on Inami and Takanashi. Chapters, I might add, that focus on Jun x Yachiyo x Kyouko, as well as Yamada (YAMAKING!).

Quoted for TRUTH

one of those rare shows that gets funnier as it settles into its set formula

One of those reasons why Working!! has been the sleeper hit of the season. Also helped that my expectations were so low to start with.

Great to know that (thanks Myssa Rei!) that there is still plenty more material from the manga available for more anime. Will be interesting to see how things will progress from here – wonder if the mangaka was surprised by the positive fan reaction to Mahiru?

I went from hating Working to loving it. So long as I get a few laughs and some memorable characters I’m pretty pleased with a comedy series – Working delivered on both fronts. As suspected nothing was resolved, but that wasnt really the point of the show – would definately watch a 2nd series.

I liked it from the get go but had serious reservations about Mahiru but ended up loving her too. This series has been a real surprise!

The real measure of its success has been how you and I and others are looking forward to a second cour.

By the way Zyl, another sign of progress for Inami: at the end, she joined Souta in greeting the customers, standing very close to him without any kind of violence.

The safety distance has certainly come down a lot – and no magic hand! Especially when she is preoccupied with something else. It was really nice how she sought a defensive position with Kotori-chan instead of going offensive against the hapless salaryman (who probably had no idea how much danger he was in!).

   Its over  I love working, I hope a second season is coming soon, or at least volume releases in the united states.

I had a feeling things were going to turn out this way, with less development…for the most part at least. I”m pretty satisfied with the last episode, especially the small details left behind like how Myssa Rei pointed out with Mahiru greeting the customers with everyone. To anyone who isn’t familiar with the situation would overlook this as just a normal thing done in a restaurant. I’m happy to see that Mahiru is slowly becoming just a regular girl thanks to Souta, and that 17 years of bad parenting can be adverted with love (and taking one for the team.)

I was complex by the special effects done in the beginning of the episode when Mahiru’s looking at her mirror, but since I got to see Mahiru act a bit more girly I overlooked it. And I”m lovin the small Mahiru details they added in this episode. Like when she feels concerned for Souta, or when she was shaking to Souta’s dog comparison. Though the part when she was called cute by Souta felt a bit over the top. (It felt kinda of suggestive, maybe I”m just been corrupted by all the ecchi I’m seen this season. B Gata Hei Kei )

Wow Jun is a really nice guy, I never knew he cared so much. Despite teasing poplar, dealing with Souma and Aoi (with violence), and evil glares (@ Kyouko) he’s a pretty…nice guy right?

Maya gave me the same feeling I got when Aoi was introduced, why is she here? But now Aoi turned out to be a lovable character in the end so I’m sure (I hope) that Maya will be able to add more flavor to this wonderful show!!

I also liked how Mahiru is starting to break through to Souta. Even though he realized it and tried to rationalize it away, for the first time, I felt there was a possibility

 OH YES!!! I’m super excited, ha ha the trainer is being trained/learn that cute things aren’t the only thing that’s great!! THERE”S HOPE!! Come on Mahiru, your so close (to touching his hand) that its driving me insane!!

17 years of bad parenting can be adverted with love (and taking one for the team.)

And the power of the magic hand and burning sense of grievance at one’s own childhood crossdressing! LOL

I was actually a bit put out by the effects in the opening – don’t think it was CG but it felt strange. But, like you said, it was sweet nonetheless. Mahiru’s over-reaction to the cute comment seems in keeping with previous experiences like Nazuna asking her if she liked (to hit) Souta and when he first praised her hairpin. Poor Mahiru just isn’t used to receiving compliments from guys.

And yes, Jun is a Man Among Men. Souta’s initial assessment from him in the first episode is absolutely spot-on: he looks scary but is actually a nice guy. For comedy, I like his continued longing for Yachiyo though, for him as a guy, I hope he can (eventually) move on.

Working!! has a good track record of introducing characters, like Mahiru, Aoi and then Maya, that made me go: Eeeeh??? but win me over on their own ‘merits’ and then how well they fit into the rest of the crew.

Not sure if you’re a Diana Ross fan but I was humming: Reach out and touch / somebody’s hand~~ while I was blogging this ahaha~♥

Well I watched this all the way to the very very end and apparantly they hope to make a 2nd season as it said, “Thank you for watching, hope to see you again!”

Anyways I’m glad to see that tiny opening from Souta about Inami’s true nature. It made me all squishy inside

Great props to Jun for totally messing up Souma & the clans spy mission! Oh I’m gonna wait for those DVD torrents to come out with bonuses I hope. I loved this show!

Like what jetbird1126 said, the ending looks low key and ordinary but is loaded with lots of meaning. I also had the same hunch as you about the hope for a second season when it said thanks and see ya!

Haha, squishy – don’t tell me you’ve been getting hit on and pounded by Mahiru too! :D

Again, mad props for Jun’s multi-tasking, out-sourcing, counter-espionage skills.

Mahiru just needs a huggy wuggy  which would cost about a good couple of months in a full body cast afterwards?

Great since its first episode (I don’t agree with who was saying “poor start”), it seems to me that there were not any fillers; every episode is worth watching again. I bet it would be hard to make a second season on the same level of this.

There’s a school of thought that non-plot-driven, slice of life shows are all ‘filler’ but Working!! is a great example of how it can be fun. That said, one can’t get the most out of the later episodes if one didn’t watch the earlier ones first. Which, to me, shows the amount of information and development that builds up as the series progresses.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Also fair enough, re: ABT – I can’t resist being a vote whore for SS!AB (esp since now we are up against the World Domination might of Aroduc) but offering yaoi service is waaaay beyond my means and ways. OTL

I was really not impressed with this show at all from the original description and probably would not have watched it were not for people urging me on. I’m glad I did, as it’s the second best show of the season (behind B Gata H Kei).

What’s with introducing a new character in the last episode though (or has she been introduced before and I just totally forgot?!?)

Reply

darknile June 29, 2010 at 1:18 am

She’s not really “new” just not introduced until the last episode. Nobody knew her name we just saw her randomly doing her job at Wagnaria.

Reply

Zyl June 29, 2010 at 2:14 am

Yeah Maya has been in the OP since it first aired but has had no lines until this ep. She’s appeared in the background a few times to show us that the usual gang aren’t the only employees at Wagnaria.

I dunno, I am conflicted. On the one hand, Yamada hussle was so freaking awesome, but on the other hand, ordering natto-katsu is like the height of evil. To disguise that disgusting concoction as a delicious fried cutlet is just unforgivable… except in Aoi’s case. Bolstered by Aoi’s Operation Cozy Family and her declaration that Life is Dorama, I found myself thinking “Well at least they never actually showed the natto *hangs head in shame*.

Too bad Mahiru doesn’t have a Magic Hand pin.

And I remember how you hated Aoi when she first turned up LOL! But at least you’re not stuttering so I know you’ve skipped the tsun stage and moved straight to dere. ;-)

Hopefully Souta remembers not to get Mahiru hairpins that look like bones or spiked collars!

They don’t affect our stats at all, negatively or positively. I guess the only negative is that they get ad-money, but at least they link back to the site.
