Angel Beats! 13 (Final) 13 01

I was just thinking... we have enough people here to form a basketball team...

Summary:

Angel Beats! 13 (Final) 13 02

I will call this newest discovery "Leadere"

Yuri wakes up to find that the remaining SSS members have forced Kanade to do all the work necessary to have a graduation ceremony.  There’s makeshift diplomas and even a Mapo tofu theme song, courtesy of Kanade.  Yuri is in moe-moe mode now that she’s fulfilled her dream of protecting everyone from computers and really awful dust bunnies, and she apologizes to Kanade for being such a bitch to her.  We also learn that Hinata’s first name is Hideki.  As the graduation ends, Ayato disappears first, then Yuri, and then Hinata.

Angel Beats! 13 (Final) 13 03

Haha, I bet you thought we were going to have another concert scene

Yuzuru wants to step outside and feel the wind, and the sight of NPCs running on the field makes him consider staying in the world with Kanade to guide other lost souls.  Yuzuru has always wanted a girlfriend who reminds him of his sister, but as he declares his love for Kanade, she drops a huge bombshell on him.  It turns out that her life was saved because she received his heart, and that is why Yuzuru regained his memories after sleeping on Kanade’s chest.  The only reason Kanade stumbled in was to say thanks to Yuzuru, and she recognized him immediately after she met and stabbed him in the chest.  As Yuzuru tearfully reiterates his love, Kanade hugs him tightly and finally disappears.  However, in the epilogue, we get a scene where Kanade is waiting on a corner and is spotted by Yuzuru…

Reaction:

Angel Beats! 13 (Final) 13 04

Hey baby, want another one of my organs inside you?

Although this was totally like the Lost ending (which I hated), I liked how everything worked out in Angel Beats.  I mean, even Microsoft Windings XD got to disappear in peace after hearing about Windings 7.  Extra points for how Yuri got in a little backhanded compliment about how she could have helped Kanade overcome being a computer-addicted loser.  I was a little surprised that Hinata didn’t need to catch a token fly ball to pass on, but I guess his confidence was restored after owning the hell out of Yuzuru’s sidearm heat (and bagging a loli-moe-moe-paralyzed girlfriend).

Angel Beats! 13 (Final) 13 05

I love how After-Afterlife Yuzuru wears so many buckles in case he is ever in another crash

The ending was a little mysterious, and I wasn’t sure where Yuzuru and Kanade are.  I am guessing that it’s not heaven or the party after the after-party, but rather a reincarnated Yuzuru feeling the loli attraction of a reincarnated Kanade.  Still, I suppose that this, like the AngelPlayer software will have to remain one of those unexplained mysteries.  BTW, I have to congratulate Ayato for somehow weaseling his way into the final 5, even though he didn’t even appear until episode 4.

Wow that was a really long feelgood ending. I mean considering the show was only 13 episodes long, a bit of an overkill no?

I’m kind of pissed off we didn’t get to see how TK managed to pass on. Probably involved some kickass dance moves mixed in with him reciting Beowolf in Engrish or something.

To be honest, TK started to annoy me towards the end. He’s better in extremely small doses.

His backstory wouldn’t really be interesting either, IMO. YO YO YO I CAN HEADSPIN MAN CRAZY

He’s awesome but his history’s probably not that… entertaining >_>

kagamihime June 26, 2010 at 1:21 am

wow that was…well I can’t really say I’m disappointed because frankly by episode 11 I really thought they were just going to make some trash up and hand it to the viewers. The whole Yuzuru and Kanade pairing is a little weird though but that’s maybe because I always saw him with Yuri? Well all in all it was a fun ride, awesome job on your posts.

Kabitzin June 26, 2010 at 1:23 am

Well now we know why Yuzuru had absolutely no reaction to groping Yuri in the first trip to Guild.

Also I forgot to mention! I want to bomb this friggen studio with my fangirl rage for not putting a TK backstory! He was too awesome a character to be ignored in such a way wth!

Haha, maybe a DVD special will sate your fangirl desire for TK.

Anyone know where I can get that buckle shirt Yuzuru is wearing at the end. It’s an awesome shirt.

I bet you could approximate it without much trouble.

You can probably buy it at walmart.

But, what about the cave with the light? And why can’t babies get formed on the island and what’s the real deal with the numbers, and… Oh, wrong show.

But what I want to know is how Kanade got there first, and how she got equipped with all that software. They didn’t even bother explaining why she was so aloof for the first few episodes.

Reply

Kabitzin June 26, 2010 at 2:03 am

Oh god, don’t remind me… Kanade was aloof because every time she wandered over she got sniped in the head.

Hung June 26, 2010 at 1:55 am

And why is my power level down to 1 again (2 now)?

I fixed it; you used a different email address.

Actually it’s stated in a earlier episode that Otonashi wandered around in a amnesiac state before wandering into that world Yurippe was in.

For all we know, he coulda been a npc that suddenly changed ala Stalker lover black haired dude.

Look at Riverworld.. It doesn’t matter when you die, sometimes you can appear the same time as someone who died years earlier or later.

Whose to say Otonashi isn’t the original designer who went mad? Maybe he wanted to see his sister again in this afterlife world.

In fact, I think Otonashi was the one who made that place and after going mad, just wandered around amnesiac. I think Otonashi woulda given anything to have his sister back.

Then finally he decides to pass on because nothing is left. No Kanade and thus we have the
reincarnation.

Lots of stories have love bypassing time and space.

Kabitzin June 26, 2010 at 2:05 am

I get the feeling that this is just a world that has been around for a while, and people just constantly pass through. I don’t think Otonashi is the original designer, just a fellow amnesiac. Remember, people with no memories are pretty common in anime; the real puzzle is why this (love) bug hasn’t been patched yet!

Joojoobees June 26, 2010 at 7:14 am

I think that world is on a loop, and Otonashi set up the Angel Player AFTER the events of episode 13. He doesn’t really get reborn, that epilogue is just the pleasant dream he programmed himself to believe until the next time Kanade is sucked into the world.

All hail Leadere!!

Somehow I just got this weird feeling that the whole thing was a game and now that the players have maxed out their character class levels and completed all their quests, they’ve gotten access to a new and different MMORPG – this time it’s a dating sim and we see Yuzuru starting on the gamepath of his destined raising heart.

For some reason this made me think that your favorite RPG class would definitely be Oneesamurai…

Just watch, he’ll greet her in the after-afert life and she’ll be like “Eeek! Chikan! Get your hands off me!” and not remember him at all. They really should have exchanged email addresses or something…

She’ll probably just stab him when he tries to grab her.

I heard that there is going to be 14th ep in the DVD…
and since angel beats is finished, you can read the manga here: http://www.mangafox.com/manga/angel_beats_heaven_s_door/
and novel chapters here: http://www.mediafire.com/angelbeatstrackzero

both talk about the past of the SSS before otonashi showed up

Kabitzin June 26, 2010 at 11:11 am

Interesting to see how the fledgling SSS screwed around and tried to piece together the story of what is going on. I liked learning the origin of Yurippe’s nickname, and the Oyama-NPC part is kinda funny knowing what I know now (although can’t believe he would later try to confess to Yuzuru’s love!) about him.

It also makes sense why Yuri decided Kanade was an angel, and it seems that Yuri wasn’t the first person to act a fool and force Kanade to regulate.

I love you man, was just looking for the manga and more Angel Beats! stuff. This show deserved more than 13 eps. I cried like a little baby when it ended :(

jetbird1126 June 26, 2010 at 9:27 am

OMG, seriously I wanted to cry, and not just because of the ending but the fact that this is how it ends. This is the same feeling I got when I watched AIR. Feeling a sense of hopelessness, that this is their fate. I’m glad that Yuzuru has another chance to get Kanade. I couldn’t believe the whole development with his heart. I had a feeling Yuzuru was able to save someone by being a donor, but I didn’t expect it to be Kanade.

I was pretty worried about Yuzuru confessing, the way Kanade was reacting was scaring me. (I’m like oh no!!! She’s going to reject him!!! NO!!!!!) But things ended ok, right! They both passed on, even though I don’t get how Kanade got the angel player, nor her back story. I’m glad I watched the series from beginning to end. But I”m not sure how to rate the show though. Its so out there.

I will call this newest discovery “Leadere”

 I did enjoy that scene very much.

Kabitzin June 26, 2010 at 11:15 am

Hahaha, I wasn’t sure if Kanade was going to accept his love. Maybe it was one of those ambiguous rejections that can be confirmed by a text from beyond the afterlife. Who knows if Kanade originally wandered in as an amnesiac too, since aside from not thanking her donor, there is no talk of her having a hard-knock life.

I find it very intriguing that even if you help everyone in life, death, and afterlife, God will not let you get with your lolicious girlfriend.

BTW, awesomest rejection line from Kanade would have been, “Sorry Yuzuru, but my heart will never be yours… again.” Finders keepers!

Shinmaru June 26, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I thought this was terrible. None of the emotion feels earned at all (mostly because the other episodes did such a poor job of making me care about the remaining characters), save for the Kanade x Otonashi scene, and even then the emotional twist makes no sense at all since Kanade kind of, uh, died and came to this world before Otonashi.

Reply

arigatou June 26, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Otonashi mentioned he lost all his memories and ended up wandering for a very long time before stumbling upon that area. Having his head on Kanade’s chest makes him recover his memories. So the heart has its own brain.

This is the type of ending I wanted in the certain popular series in 2006.

And I conclude 2010 as the “Year of the Moe Silent and Stubborn Characters”.

I want an OVA where Yuzura and Kanade ended up as lovers after being reborned.
She might slap Otonaashi for touching her shoulders, which he himself doesn’t know why he did it.

Oh my god at the organ caption, haha. This series ripped of the illusion of gaia (super nintendo) ending. Not that I’m too upset but I think IoG pulled it off better.

But this was pretty entertaining. Not a favourite but well worth a watch.

This was 10 episodes too short and I was facepalming when they had time to sing anthems and hand out certificates rather than giving some backstory explanation. Not the best Key for sure.

Great series! a few boring episodes but all and all not to bad, more back story would have been nice on some of the other characters thou ah well. This last episode was very nice not to sad as some of the other episodes but explains a lot on Kanade and Otonashi’s connection which I don’t think anyone would have guessed the whole heart thing well maybe. The final scene of them somewhat meeting in the real world was a bit of a .Hack//sign moment for me lol..

Great artwork and lovely music! but not sure if its worth buying or re-watching who knows!

A very anticlimatic finale. This made me rewatch the series.

It must be “purgatory” if the datatech is Windings/ows!

More than likely the scene after the end credits had to do with reincarnation. Japan is heavily Bhuddist after all. If one wants, one could also look at it from a “new heavens/new earth” kind of thing. I don’t think
fashion/style & commerce will be gone during the “millenium”.

My “take” on the series here
