I'm not blind, I was just resting my eyes...
Summary:
I like how Father saved the king's soul just so he could recreate him then vapourize him right away
We quickly flash back to the end of the previous episode where a ground-level Father decides to harvest some soldiers for Philosopher’s Stone power. In a bit of a retcon (previously Father succeeded in making a stone, although I bet now I’ll get comments that say “look closely Epi you idiot those guys are dead”), we see Hohenheim coming up to save the soldiers by attacking Father. As everyone else shows up, Hohenheim taunts Father by asking him what use is a Homunculus god if he can only destroy but not create. In response Father decides to pluck out some souls from within his stone and recreate some of the people of Xerxes including the king (who recognizes Hohenheim). As everyone reels in disgust, Father decides to throw out a mega blast to kill our heroes.
I feel the story's creators are making fun of RAN FAN by having her lob a useless grenade
The blast disables everyone and cripples Al, but hurts Hohenheim the most as had positioned himself to shield everyone from the blast. Back underground Greed rounds up more people to fight Father and leaves behind the wounded including a very proud Olivier who reluctantly stays behind. With everyone temporarily dazed, Father resumes his soul harvesting starting with Ed and Izumi. Before he can finish, a bullet to the head stops Father. It seems the Briggs soldiers have acted, and soon an entire battalion surrounds father, pumping out mortars and bullets into him. Everyone else responds as well with their own attacks (the dumbest being RAN FAN and Darius’ pointless attacks) including Roy Mustang who with Riza’s sniper eye guidance unleashes his full flame power against Father. Father repels them all with his red alchemy shield.
Izumi can't pierce Father's AT-Field
At this point Greed decides to attack and try and absorb Father’s god-knowledge but Father absorbs Greed’s stone instead. While he’s busy with Greed, Izumi, Ed and Armstrong decide to attack with melee attacks. Finally Father’s shield is whittled down and he blocks Ed’s last attack with his arm. Father starts to lose control of his own body and a huge explosion results.
"Awww man Truth didn't cut my finger nails, what the hell?"
Father has now been crippled, and on his last legs he moves to an immobilized Ed to harvest his soul. Realizing that his own blood patch is about to be destroyed in his cracked armour, Al gets May Chang to create an alchemy path to Ed as he sacrifices his own soul so that Truth would release Ed’s limbs back to him to allow him to fight Father. As Al’s soul disappears back behind the gate, Ed does not let his brother’s sacrifice go to waste as he quickly pulls himself up with his new limbs to fight Father.
We know he's crippled, but still we're just going to stand here with our guns and let you do all the hard work Ed!
Everyone cheers Ed on as he unleashes round of kick ass on Father as the episode ends.
Reaction:
Somewhere out there, Winry shed a tear
I have mixed feelings about this episode actually. On one hand, this episode had the so called epic battle that I had been looking forward to all along. With virtually every non-injured character making a contribution to fighting Father and with the predictable act of the main hero throwing the finishing punch, this really should have been the FMA battles to end all battles, but it really wasn’t. I may have expected too much of Father, but really just having everyone pummel him while he stands around looking nonplussed wasn’t really that exciting.
If you think about it though it’s sort of his own fault. Because he created the other Homunculi to do his dirty work on the surface while he sat in his chair, Father really has no idea how to fight at all. While he’s really good at verbal manipulation and trickery, he’s literally a little kid when it comes to fighting. There is also the issue of Father’s arrogance in never thinking that the humans were worthy enough for him to even try against. Therefore we see him do stupid things like waste a ton of energy on Macross Cannon beam spams, stand there and just take explosions and hits as if he had unlimited power, and not using any creative ideas whatsoever to fight back. It was kind of weird though for Father who has proved to be such an intelligent and resourceful villain so far to actually think he could stand there and take hits and that it wouldn’t matter.
While it would have made for a vastly more enjoyable final fight if Father actually did do some creative alchemy that our heroes had to overcome, it’s understandable how it turned it. I was hoping for too much I guess.
I was also weirded out by the final montage of everyone cheering on Ed to kill Father. While in the context of an anime we can be sure that Ed will prevail, in the context of common sense, we have this guy who was just seemingly invulnerable fighting a teenager with an injured arm by himself. Why doesn’t ANYONE else help out? A clean bullet to the head of Father would do wonders to help, so would anyone else helping out with Alchemy. Also, considering everyone else got up so quickly to cheer Ed on, why wasn’t anyone doing anything when Ed was crippled and about to be harvested other than Al? I understand it’s a bit of a plot point, but it was kind of a dumb plot point. I would have preferred everyone to still be on the ground and immobilized (and cheering) rather than jumping up and down holding guns and cheering for Ed.
In terms of important plot elements, we did get a bit of an unexpected but not entirely surprising plot element of Al’s soul finally leaving this world. There’s no doubt in my mind that in the last two episodes Ed will find a way to bring back Al body and all, but I wonder how it will be done. Will Hohenheim use up the last of his power, perhaps even his own soul to bring his son back? Will they use the Philosopher’s Stone that Kimblee dropped before, or the one RAN FAN is carrying (which will probably go to GreedLing)? Either way it doesn’t matter, because now that he has his arms back, I don’t think we will see Ed losing them again. It would be a bit weird to see the armour-Al recreated though with Ed back to his automail self to end off the series considering all of the other options available.
We do also get a bit of an acknowledgment that the ‘Truth’ guys are repositories for lost body parts and lost souls. I wonder if people who die ever meet Truth in this world, or if the only way is to perform human transmutation.
I do have to say that it was really nice to see Roy fighting once again. Riza has the sharpest eyes in Amestris and I think it’s great that they so compliment each other now. Roy was looking a bit like a cripple the previous two episodes, so to see him use his power at full power was a sight to see.
I expect next episode to have a bit of Father reviving a little and having a bit more fight in him before he’s finally defeated… either that or he reveals some kind of shocking ‘truth’ to everyone before he vapourizes forever.
Oh and the animation was super choppy this episode. It seems like both the A and B teams were working alternately as we would go from good to bad to good animation non-stop.
Finally I wanted to thank everyone who voted for Sea Slugs! in the AniBlog tournament, and hope you’ll be with us for round 5 as well!

Yeah, the “everybody cheering Ed” on part at the end was pretty strange given how they were helping out minutes ago. It was the one part of the story that Arakawa-sensei actually fell for those classic shounen tendencies. The episode was better than the manga though, probably because it was animated and had the music to add to the emotions.
Not that strange. It’s like isolation plays when everyone stands around and watches Kobe go 1-on-5. I wonder what the warranty is like on Ed’s arm, btw.
I was kinda disappointed that there weren’t pigment changes in the arm. I feel strongly that there should have been either a farmer’s tan or a reverse farmer’s tan.
I don’t necessarily think that everyone was standing around ignorant to the fact Ed was fighting alone, but I took it as the guy might of just lost his brother, the least we could let him do is take it out on Father, who is about to die anyway. The only thing is that would seem to go up against the anti revenge theme set up by the Mustang v Envy battle.
Good basketball analogy Kabitzin. Except Ed isn’t Kobe… there’s plenty of other guys who probably think they are stronger than he is. Ed just happens to be the main hero of this anime.
Seriously? The episode was NOT better than the manga. This episode didn’t capture the greatness of chapter 107 at all. Personally I think it was one of the worst episodes past the first season as far as adaptation goes.
I could also perceive the high quality of FMA2 anime dropping in the last 12 episodes or so, compared to what it was (MAJOR EXCELLENT -> MINOR EXCELLENT), but it still is the best we could ask for already.
The Naruto Manga is the uncontestable proof that all mangas are better than its animes, So saying any manga is better than its anime is just saying what i’m tired of hearing/knowing.
But one thing you must agree with me is that, it is a damn fucking show, it is
I dunno if ‘all mangas are better than animes’. It really depends which one you see first, because people usually like what they see first. For instance, I though the Death Note anime was more or less exactly the same as the manga… so having it animated was actually better IMO. But like Love Hina manga was vastly superior. (I don’t read that many mangas)
Ranfan-fan, I salute your name. RAN FAN!!!!
That screenshot reminds me of gaijin 4koma.
i liked this episode anyway
i would like to point out that if Father attacked everyone that was attacking him he would probably lose more power for his stone then if he just sat still and took all the damage
he was purely tiring to recharge his stone nothing else. and are you sure that the soldier’s that Hohenhime saved are the same one’s from the last episode
also GreedLing still has his stone in the manga it was a faint attack to make father leave himself open Greed’s hand was not in Father’s face long enough for him to drain the stone (if he had drained the stone he would have fought back more) he did fight back a bit he sent Mustang’s flames back at him
final thing The soldier’s did not fire because ed was fighting at close range they could hit Ed by mistake
I think the best way to think about it is… what would Ed do if he were in the same situation as Father. And the answer would be… not just stand there and take hits. Ed would go kick some ass. So would Mustang, so would Scar, so would Olivier, so would… just about anybody but Father. So yeah I think it was kind of weak.
I am not 100% sure if the soldiers are the same, but last episode we see Father rise up to the surface and ‘kill’ some soldiers. Then this episode, Father’s still in the same spot, but there’s no bodies from previous killings.
The soldiers Father drained last episode are still dead. After Al, Mei, and Izumi come up to stand with Hohenheim, the camera pans back to give us a birds-eye view of the courtyard. There are a couple of dead Briggs guys laying near Hohenheim.
Didn’t the soldiers mention they ran outta bullets?
More proof that Baka-Raptor kick ass:
Put “I’m not blind, I was just resting my eyes…” on google and guess who comes first ?
http://www.google.com/search?q=I%27m+not+blind%2C+I+was+just+resting+my+eyes…
Al went to ‘Truth’ and regained his lost body at least, but it was more like a place between ‘hell and heaven’, poiting out that Ed could find a way to get him back to the physical/material/non-ethereal world.
For me Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is the Best anime in the universe already, no other can even come close to it, so much that i’ll decrease by one the scores of all shows i’ve ever seen so far, because FMA2 must be a 10 loner.
And you won’t thank those who voted against ? tehehe, sorry gramps, although this post was very good and well written, i will never forgive you guys for beating baka-raptor
Perhaps you don’t realize, but I’ve been a regular reader/commenter of Baka-Raptor’s for about 3 years, and he reads this blog regularly too. I’ve even referenced his posts before in my FMA posts. All the jokes we made about each other blogs during the previous AniBlog tourney round were surely in jest.
Reaaaly ? then you should have been on a dilemma for whom to vote, or in fact, you must have voted for baka-raptor in secret. =P
Don’t worry, Epi, I won’t sue you.
No worries, I have better lawyers than you can ever be (OMG I WENT THERE
)
Epi that made no sense at all XD You’re great with blogging but….”I have better lawyers than you can ever be” makes no sense at all
Your convention skills need some work muahahahahaahhaaha <3 u epi
hmmm yeah i felt like the episode went for a strange turn at the end, everyone cheering with guns in thier hands. btw i really liked the hand commentary there lol OMG he didnt cut my nails almost made me fall off my chair.
My comment made perfect sense if you knew more about BR.
Made sense to me….I’m assuming this Baka-Raptor person is a lawyer/wants to be a lawyer/something of that nature.
Well there are two possible reasons why Ed was fighting alone. One was that they were running out of bullets and two was that Ed and Father look alike, meaning it would be hard to snipe one of them while two were fighting each other.
I enjoyed the episode, even if it was a shonen trope moment. All the other characters pretty much had roles earlier and were overshadowing Ed, so seeing him beat the crap out of Father was satisfying.
I dont think there are 2 philosopher’s stone left….
The one Kimblee had was used in the fight Al vs Pride and by Marcoh to heal Heinkel…
I guess there’s only 1 left which is with Ran Fan..
they can be used more then once you know
lets check all the stone’s in the series status
Marcoh’s stone was taken by Envy when he was captured by him and given to Gold tooth after that taken by Ran Fan
Cornello’s stone ran out of power after his fight with Ed
Kimblee’s stone 1 knocked out of his hand by Ed taken by Hinekel then given to Al to fight Kimblee and Pride ended up with Marcoh
Kimblee’s stone 2 adsorbed by Pride when Kimblee was eaten by him and destoryed when Ed Broke Pride’s container
I agree with Epi for the most part. I was a bit disappointed in this episode because Father was so stupid throughout.
Why didn’t he try and absorb Hohenheim after the Macross beam spam? Why, after losing control of his body, did he go for Edward? He probably should’ve gone for Greed instead for the souls.
Although, this does bring up something interesting… I wonder if Hohenheim is literally out of souls to heal himself. After blocking Father’s Macross beam, he wasn’t regenerating at all and could barely stand for the rest of the episode. I mean, yeah he had 500,000+ souls in him, but that Macross beam was pretty crazy.
My favorite part of this episode was when the whole Briggs army suddenly showed up and the camera panned around to reveal Father completely surrounded. Usually when that happens it’s the good guy cornered by the villains (Batman Beyond did this). This is the first time I’ve seen a villain totally surrounded on all sides like that. Plus I just love it when a modern army meets a horrible evil from the ancient world. It’s like, who will prevail, bullets and rockets or magic? lol
@Grey
I long since stopped questioning why some characters aren’t killed even though they really should have been. The Chimeras are good examples of that.
And yeah Hohenheim’s pretty weakened right now which is why he didn’t get up after being flung about by father. Last weeks scene of Ho. using his own philospher stone to shield everyone from fathers attack was far shorter than it was in the manga, where you clearly saw the prolonged attack whittle away his energy bit by bit. The Macross beam merely finished him off. Because the anime rushed through that part it does look like he runs out of juice pretty quicky.
My fave part (aside from the Ed pwnage scene at the end) was Olivier finding Wrath’s body. That quiet little scene spoke volumes to me.
Who could have been helping Ed at that point? Mustang couldn’t use his flame alchemy at that point or he would have incinerated Ed. The Briggs soldiers were out of ammo, so they had to pause while they got more. And if the Briggs men had just charged Father blindly he’d just have made them into Philosopher’s Stones. Izumi and Armstrong have already been thrown around like ragdolls at this point so they’re probably too exhausted to run up to Father and save Ed while simultaneously barraging him with alchemic attacks. They all know Ed has his own strong will anyway. I’m sure they’ll be helping Ed at the beginning of the next episode.
I find it funny that Heinkel, Yoki, and Dr. Marcoh are probably still wandering somewhere around the city obvious to everything that’s going on. Darius’s attack reminded me of Digimon.
In the manga hienkel attacked with zanpano and darus
Also, I am totally psyched for the REAL final battle.
Since it now definitely looks like Father’s gonna be down for the count real soon, we take a look at the title for the next episode: “The Other Side of the Gate.” Which can mean only one thing:
COMING UP NEXT: EDWARD ELRIC VS. GOD. HEAVEN OR HELL, LET’S ROCK!!!!!!!
I agree. The fight was… meh. Though, it was pretty cool to see Mustang fighting again. And now he’s got a heck of a defense. If he wasn’t blind right now, people would probably be debating on boards about how much more overpowered he’s become.
Ah, shounen. Plot points rule all. Aside from the not-helping-Ed-thing, there was also that little scene where Father’s shield dropped and everyone just stood around instead of getting out of the fucking way so someone could shoot him or so Mustang could incinerate him. But I guess Ed as the hero couldn’t have gotten his lick in if it’d gone down that way. Still better than most.
Btw, first time commenter but I’ve been reading your blog for a while now. Great job! Thanks!
Maybe you fail to realize that Father is trying desperately to hold onto “God”, so he really CAN’T do anything because of it.
Even if Father was doing everything he could to contain “god”, the plan of sitting there taking hit after hit makes far less sense than dropping the shield and dispatching the heroes quickly. Either way, he is going to waste power, but one plan makes a hell of a lot more sense. Also more enjoyable to watch.
Using his energy shield would drain him far more quickly than just taking a few hits.
I’m sure that’s why he opted to go with that.
After seeing this episode, it makes me wonder how much attention Epi actually pays to each episode.
Everyone standing around cheering for Ed: Did you not see the huge explosion just seconds earlier that half-killed everyone? Imagine when you’re hurt, you can’t do anything but cheer, wouldn’t you?
Especially in just a few minutes time; Ed was only able to thanks to how absolutely fueled with rage he is.
Just because it takes 5 minutes to show in the anime, doesn’t mean it’s actually 5 minutes in the show; Greed can’t talk to himself for a minute while Edward is pounding Father in? Ed’s got it under control anyway.
You really need to start paying attention, Epi. I wonder why you even bother watching if you don’t understand even the basic concepts of this show, or just writing in general.
This episode had indeed somewhat typical shounen elements.
I have to admit that it doesn’t bother me that much, it was probably kinda inevitable that the epic final fight(s) would turn out to be more or less shounenish. As long as there are no major inconsistencies with the plot, this show will stay n°1 for me
Also, did anyone else note the reference to the first manga chapter (thats episode 3 I believe) where Ed said almost exactly the same to Cornello as he says to father in the end: ‘Get up/Come down here , punk. Ill show you the diffrence between out powers’.
I’m probably skipping the next episode and watch it together with the last one. This show deserves a 40-min finale
