Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 61 FMA2 61 01

As Father is set to rule the world, RAN FAN comes to save the day. YES RAN FAN!

Summary:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 61 FMA2 61 02

Now that I'm a perfect being, I have master the power of... the Hadouken

After a brief flashback of Ed and Al as little kids discussing the creation of a “Perfect Being”, we flash back to the present with a montage of everyone dead in Amestris. It appears that the only ones left alive are those at the centre of it all, which include our five human sacrifices (who weren’t really sacrificed at all). Father meanwhile has changed into a younger and more evil looking Hohenheim, now able to generate a mini sun in the palm of his hand. Before a furious Ed is able to fight him Father turns off alchemy once again.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 61 FMA2 61 03

"She's gone from suck to blow!"

At that moment, Hohenheim finally decides to reveal his trump card. After years of careful calculation, he had scattered the souls in his own Philosopher’s Stone around the countryside which now activate of their own volition to form giant alchemy circle using shadow from the solar eclipse shadow to reverse Father’s previous transmutation to take the souls of the 50 million people of Amestris. With the souls returned, everyone is back alive, and Father is unable to hold in his new found powers with just the remaining souls of Xerxes.

Macross Frontier deflects the Macross cannon of Galaxy

Still extremely power, Father decides to fire pure energy at our heroes, but May Chang and Hohenheim manage to deflect this energy while they await to Scar to complete his part of the plan.

Upstairs, the Bradley/Scar fight continues as Bradley taunts Scar on his usage of constructive Alchemy being against his religion. Scar is no match for Bradley even with alchemy though. As Bradley’s about to deal the finishing blow, the glare from the reappearing sun provides Scar with some last minute luck as he finally connects with his arm of destruction and takes down Bradley, but not before Bradley manages to stab him in the abdomen. At that moment, an unmasked RAN FAN appears to avenge his grandfather, but she has talked too much and Bradley perishes before she is able to do more. Scar asks RAN FAN to move him over to an alchemy circle, as he performs his brother’s alchemy.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 61 FMA2 61 07

Take that T-1000!

Scar’s alchemy is actually aimed at nullifying various Philosopher’s Stones that Father had installed around Amestris, allowing him to turn off Western alchemy at will, the oddity in the west that Scar’s brother had discovered years ago. With those stones nullified, our heroes in Father’s lair are once again able to perform alchemy. With Hohenheim’s urging, they start to fight Father to force him to use up his Philosopher’s stone. After pouring some molten lava on Father, he survives and escapes up the hole in the roof to the surface where he starts harvesting more souls from the people he encounters. Hohenheim, Greed, Al and Izumi set off to fight Father, while Al stays behind to finish off Pride.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 61 FMA2 61 08

Obi Wan Kimblee? Maybe not.

Although weakened, Pride still manages to pin Ed down, but before he can kill him, Kimblee suddenly appears in Pride’s head to interrupt the little guy. Surprised that Kimblee could retain his own consciousness inside his Philosopher’s Stone, Kimblee explains that despair is like home for him. With Pride momentarily distracted, Ed moves in and manages to defeat Pride, reducing him to his basic form, a small fetus crying for it’s mother.

Reaction:

This was a pretty amazing episode. The chilling scene at the beginning of the episode of all the dead bodies was perfectly executed and haunting to say the least.

As was easily predicted, while the previous episode showed Father’s greatest moment, this showed the beginning of his defeat. We had been led to believe that Hohenheim’s entire plan rested on him trying to take over Father’s body with his soul power which failed a few episodes back but we were wrong. It seems like his abandoning his kids and wandering the countryside for all of those years really did serve a purpose with his alchemy circle which restored the souls of the people of Amestris. I had a feeling that he had an extra card up his sleeve as he had promised a lot of episodes back that he could neutralize Father, but was still a bit surprised that it was this epic. So Hohenheim, I applaud you.

As for Scar, it’s interesting to note that his battle with Bradley ended up with him severing both of Bradley’s arms. It was a bit of poetic justice that his greatest victory would be to end someone else’s life the way his own was almost ended. While Bradley taunted Scar about using constructive alchemy and Scar said nothing, we can imply that this was one of those “the greater good outweighs these sins” kind of moments. As predicted, Scar had some awesome alchemy up his sleeve when he completed his brother’s research by reactivating tectonic alchemy in Amestris. We have all wondered all along what those pipes coming out of Father were actually doing, and instead of actually powering alchemy in Amestris as I had believed, it seems like the tectonic plate thing was actually not a lie after all, and in fact Father was actively blocking alchemy all along. I do wonder, if some of this blocking was actually used to siphon off extra energy for Father himself to increase his power, or if the act of blocking actually took power to perform.

I was quite happy with the fact that after episodes of standing around doing nothing and crying, RAN FAN was finally unmasked and doing something after all. Although she didn’t kick any ass, she at least had the pivotal job of moving Scar to the right place so that he could save the world. Kind of a letdown considering how totally awesome RAN FAN is (I would have liked for her to have taken out Bradley before he could kill Scar instead of having the the glare be his downfall, but I guess scar needed his duo amputation moment) but at least she’s still in the story unlike say how Dr. Marcoh and crew haven’t been seen for a long time now.

With the death of two homunculi this episode, we get to see the “basic forms’ of both Wrath and Pride. Wrath being of course Bradley, an old man without the invigorating powers of his Philosopher’s Stone, and Pride literally a little baby. I was a bit surprised to see Kimblee reappear, but if anyone could “live” in a Philsopher’s Stone, I guess ole pimpin’ would be the one to do it. Nice to see though him somewhat asserting his respect for Ed and Ed’s ability to fight for his beliefs.

With three episodes left, we’re left with a number of major loose ends to tie up. Firstly there’s the defeat of Father. While weakened, he’s still the most powerful guy around, and I predict that Hohenheim will use up all his own power to defeat him. Secondly, there’s the fact that both RAN FAN and Al are now holding Philosopher’s Stones. I do wonder what will happen with them, and whether they will tie into the third point that Ed and Al need to regain their bodies (and perhaps Mustang and Izumi as well).

Then of course we have all the more ‘minor’ plot points about Grumman vs Olivier vs Mustang to rule Amestris, WinryXEd, what happens to GreedLing now, and the end of the Scar, Ling, RAN FAN and May Chang stories. And of course whether or not the RAN FAN spinoff will ever be a reality.

One last thing though. For the last 40 episodes we’ve been made aware that Ed and Al (and later Izumi, Mustang and Hohenheim) had been marked off as “human sacrifices”. With Father completing his part of the plan, how exactly were these guys sacrificed? From what I saw, they were the only ones left alive after Father becomes a perfect being, so I’d say that’s pretty much the OPPOSITE of being a sacrifice. Seems like this was all a convenient moniker for our heroes to misdirect viewers/readers on purpose which personally I think is kind of crappy.

P.S. With the manga over, and with me not being a manga reader, I ask PLEASE NO SPOILERS.

When you open the Gate, you sacrifice part of yourself. The sacrifice has already occurred, he just needs all of them to open the Gate himself.. He specifically needed 5 because he needs one on each point of the transmutation. That’s my understanding, anyway.

Never heard of a catalyst before? “Human sacrifice” could just be a simplification or mistranslation, so it doesn’t have to be purely a deus ex machina.

i belive that the proper one was human piller

Greedling June 14, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Yeah, it’s human pillar. The correct translation.

Which actually….human pillars were people buried alive in the foundations of buildings in Japan (long time ago of course) so that means Ed, Al, Izumi, Roy, Hohenheim were more literally “foundations” for Father carrying out his plan.

Mei June 14, 2010 at 6:11 pm

The Chinese translation for the five “sacrifices” has always been “human pillars”. So yeah, it might be a translation thing.

@ Greedling wow that bit about people buried alive is gruesome, but very interesting :D where did you find that info?

Ah so it was a translation problem after all. That kind of sucks that a faulty translation had screwed up my entire interpretation of this show for so long :(

Huh. Who would’ve thought, Bradley was really OLD SNAKE.

Or is that, old Big Boss? Whatever, they both work.

Does anyone else find it ironic that Scar died losing both his arms in the ’03 anime, but who’s laughing now, bitches?

Or the fact that Bradley’s defeat was foreshadowed by Ling way back in episode 22? “You rely on your eyes too much” anyone? DUDE…

Plus, there’s the whole Kimblee thing. You got that shot of “Obi Wan Kimblee” walking away. Compare with this

That’s how we got introduced to him in episode 31. Pretty awesome that he ended up leaving the series the exact same way he entered it.

Haha, well, like most video game PCs, Bradley can take unholy amounts of damage.

Kimblee could only be cooler had he moonwalked out of the scene.

LOL good catch, Bradley really is Old Snake!

Grey June 15, 2010 at 3:14 am

Watch, I bet Ed will get rid of his automail and take Bradley’s right arm as a replacement.

Then after everything’s over, when he talks to Roy he’ll start convulsing and all of a sudden…

“Hello again, Colonel Mustang. Nice sunglasses you have there. Hope losing your vision wasn’t too painful.”
“What… how?! You were killed by Scar!”
“So I was. But I live on… THROUGH THIS ARM!”

XD

clinton June 14, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Well here it is the final two sin punishments

Wrath death by dismemberment (means getting your limbs chopped off)

Pride to be broken on wheel (no wheel but he was broken both body and mind)

Kimblee was badass calling out Pride for having no pride was great that kid was a dumb hypocite

this episode was diffrent then the manga in the manga Father fired the enrgey blasts first with May and hohenhime blocking them he got tried of this. so then he brought out the mini son (in the manga he said he did not want to destroy his home so he did not want to use the mini son But”whatever i can always retransmute it later) he also showed off more of his godley powers like the fact he can control the weather with a thought) actually just read the chapter

OOOhhh cool thanks for sharing all these punishments Clinton!

did you read the chapter

zoon June 15, 2010 at 3:34 am

I think they did that because there was a mistake, scar and others were alive even before Hohenheim activate his circle.

Reply

clinton June 15, 2010 at 4:30 am

scar was in the middle of the circle and it does not give reason for skipping out on showing gods powers

Greedling June 14, 2010 at 5:22 pm

This has got to be my least favorite episode in the last 3 seasons. Very disappointed…. Which is a shame since episode 60 and 58 are probably my top two of the whole series and they have to be followed by this shit…

And I’m, god, I’m worried after seeing the next episode preview. I won’t spoil anything Epi but if that last scene is the moment from the manga I think it is…then…just damn it all.

Grey June 15, 2010 at 3:05 am

I guess this episode is really splitting the manga fanbase. On one hand , you have the folks at fullmetal-alchemist.com that share your opinion. On the other hand, I also see manga fans over at the Animesuki forums saying that they’re glad Bro’hood toned down the “God mode” and the beam spam “barrage from heaven” that Father unleashed (then again, the general consensus at Animesuki already had a low opinion of Chapter 105 in the first place…)

Reply

Greedling June 15, 2010 at 9:22 pm

It’s not even an issue with Father’s “god-mode” that made me dislike this episode. I just think they altogether executed the manga material poorly.

And like I said, that next episode preview worries me.

As I’ve already read the manga..I dont think there’s any suspense and a topic for discussion..
But I was really expecting some of your comments and caption when I saw Mustang and Izumi holding each other ;) (Also Riza and Donkey Kong!!)
And I dunno about others…but for me when I suddenly see the Ran Fan pic…it seems the male version of Mustang!

Reply

Epi June 15, 2010 at 1:47 am

I hope you mean female Mustang! Don’t be calling my RAN FAN a guy now :(

The Izumi/Mustang pic was just too easy. Mustang looks so much like a crippled old man without his vision it’s almost sad. You would think the guy would fight back some instead of being totally useless and depressed.

Fai D Fluorite June 15, 2010 at 3:07 am

Whoops..ya I meant female version of Mustang :)
Hahaha Epi gets so mad if said anything about Ran Fan!
He’s gonna have a broken heart!

Good episode, the best part was the twist about wraths relationship with his wife, i thought he loved her.
The best character in fullmetal.

Forgot to comment about Epi’s “loose ends.”

Well, I’m going to take a shot at this and say, Roy’s definitely out of the running for Fuhrer. Unless his eyesight is restored (I doubt this is going to happen) the contest is going to come down to Grumman vs. Olivier.

Hey Epi, what do you mean “Al has a Philosopher’s Stone?” I thought he gave the Stone to Marcoh way back in episode 52. I don’t think it’ll be very important, since as you noted, Marcoh and co. have been MIA for a while now.

Finally, I also share in your fervent wish for a RAN FAN spinoff. Actually make that more of a Xing spinoff saga, where Ling, Ran Fan and Mei go back to Xing after the series is over and take part in the succession war that is sure to be raging a la Romance of the Three Kingdoms ROFL. I hope Arakawa does like a 5-6 chapter spinoff volume.

(Unless Chapter 108 resolves the Xing political situation. No spoilers please, I too do not read the manga).

By the way, Pride is so clearly not dead. You don’t call out “mama” when you’re dead.

That’s what Kimblee was meaning when he said “You don’t understand Edward Elric”. It’s a bit more clear, because he adds one more line.

Pride: I’m… I’m going to be killed!
Kimblee: Killed? You don’t understand Edward Elric”

Without the “Killed?” line, it’s hard to get what he’s meaning, but Ed told Kimblee before that he has the resolve NOT to Kimblee, so Kimblee was basically telling Pride he was not going to be killed, because Ed never kills anyone.

Tommy Vercetti June 15, 2010 at 9:30 am

God, what is wrong with my keyboard?

“Resolve not to kill” and the “Killed?” line was in the manga? I hate how I leave off words.

Reply

Grey June 15, 2010 at 2:58 pm

I understood perfectly what Kimblee meant, even without the extra lines. It also helped that I rewatched episode 41 the other day, so all his talk about “the resolve not to kill” was still fresh in my mind.

It’s pretty clear what happened: there really once was a boy named “Selim” that apparently was corrupted centuries ago by Father into Pride. That’s what I got from the last scene because Edward is screaming “SELIM” not “PRIDE.” He managed to save the original Selim and destroyed the Homunculus’s corruption on his soul (witness the black shadow vanishing from Selim’s soul).

Which was awesome.

Reply

Tommy Vercetti June 15, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Uh… no.

Selim Bradley is just an act; not a real persona. Selim was created for the sole purpose of being a fake human persona for Pride.

There’s a hint you’ll see in the last episode that’ll make you think otherwise, but I’ll tell you this, it’s still Pride.

Pride is Selim, and Selim is Pride. You could think of “Selim” as a persona IF Pride wasn’t evil, but it wasn’t a little boy that got taken over or anything like that. Selim has always been Pride and was created AS Pride.

They didn’t follow the Chapter as too well this episode. And they didn’t make father’s god form as hot as it was in the manga… :’(. But in the manga, Pride try’s to make Ed into a new container because the Selim one is disintegrating. BTdubes, I just have to say I LOVE what happens to Pride in the end.
