B Gata H Kei 01

Hellomotto on June 13, 2010 · in B Gata H Kei

Wait--a girl's doing this too? Maybe I shouldn't be so embarrassed about it after all...

Summary:

For you [older] males out there: remember the hottest girl in your class? Remember her pretty face, those long eyelashes, those beautiful eyes? Remember how her figure was so hot that could it literally burn down the sun? To many, Yamada is the epitome of such a female. She’s cute. She’s got perfect measurements. She’s got style and enough sass to make the boys go loco. Hell, she’s even crazy about sex–much to the dismay of her rational friend Miharu Takeshita (who, by the way, is very well-endowed).

There’s just one teeny tiny problem, though…Yamada is (*gasp*) a virgin. (Cue the horror-themed music.) Alas, now she can never have a true boyfriend who will be satisfied! And so, in an effort to counter this, she does what any logical high schooler would do: she resolves to bang 100 dudes.

Another day, another 100 males to fornicate with. (Pardon the subber's French.)

Just when she’s about to get down and dirty, along comes Takashi Kosuda. Only one word is needed to describe this young man: plain. The bishoujo Yamada, in their first encounter, notes his ordinary face and ordinary personality. But no matter; she’s just the type of man she’s been looking for–a semi-muscular virgin who’ll be her first. (Just how cute is that?)

And so, for as long as it takes in her high school career, Yamada will chase after Kosuda. The entire world–most notably, the classroom, library, and Kosuda’s house–will be her stage, where millions will witness Yamada’s ascent into womanhood. All the while, she’ll be begging Kosuda to cut off her maiden head (Shakespearian reference, anyone?).

Cue the hilarious shenanigans.

You called, Yamada?

Reaction:

If anyone remembers the Spring 2010 preview, he or she will know that I completely dismissed B Gata H Kei to be a complete and utter whore-fest. (Excuse the vulgarity of the previous statement.) Let’s also not forget the other rather-busty girls that will soon partake in the anime. To say the least, I had enough of ecchi series; I didn’t want to waste my time on another show featuring 2-D scantly-dressed girls.

And then, in viewing just one episode, I realized that my approach on the series was entirely erroneous. Sure, it’s a comedy, and Yamada does show some skin consistently throughout the episode, but the very basic elements of an ecchi comedy were entirely absent. Gone were the busty babes flying all over the place. Gone was the harem aspect of the series. And, with each passing second, gone were my preview prejudices I had expressed almost three months earlier. Moreover, for the most part, we do not perceive the series from Kosuda’s point of view but rather Yamada’s. To say the least, this had been one of those times when my experience could fit the oh-so classic cliche: “Never judge a book by its cover.”

It’s safe to say, then, that B Gata H Kei cannot be categorized as “ecchi.” What can we classify B Gata H Kei as, anyways? It’s definitely got aspects of a romance: Yamada and Kosuda will inevitably become boyfriend and girlfriend. The direction of the series, even after one episode, reveals that Yamada will prevail in ensnaring Kosuda. Still, I found the romantic parts–that is, the scene in which the two walk in the rain sharing an umbrella–to be cute, albeit a bit cliche.

Step 1 to a fruitful relationship: Expose yourself in the most superficial, physical sense possible.

There’s also no question that B Gata H Kei fits under the comedy genre. In fact, it’s safe to say that creating humor is the director’s main goal of the series–and he certainly makes the series funny. Though some of the jokes are  recycled and feel like deja-vu, there are particular scenes that sent me into fits of laughter. I thought the library scene was done particularly well, and considering I rarely favor this type of humor, I believe the series does its job in the comedy department.

Although most typical anime series would characterize themselves solely as romantic comedies, B Gata H Kei manages to escape such a definition. Although romance and comedy remain an integral part of the series, they do not–and cannot–define the series alone. Yamada, whom we intimately follow in the series, does not view the world from an “E-Harmony” perspective, if you will. Rather, through her eyes, we see a world of opportunity and exploration. We see a girl who eagerly attempts to explore her sexuality yet cowers at the very sight of the outline of the male genitalia. We see a child ready to enter adulthood while still clinging on to her childlike naivete. B Gata H Kei is thus, in the most basic sense, the coming-of-age story of a high school girl.

And that is why, whenever we see Yamada desperately trying to seduce Kosuda in order to understand sex, we feel a sense of nostalgia. We have already experienced or are currently experiencing our metamorphosis from childhood to adulthood; and, similar to the longing of innocence I talked about in Hanamaru Kindergarten, each one of Yamada’s actions remind us of our personal experiences, no matter how sad, exciting, or embarrassing they may be.

I rest my case.

Will do, mein Fuhrer.

Note: Due to RL reasons/time constraints, I’ve dropped Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy) and started blogging B Gata H Kei. I’ll be posting about the series periodically. However, I’ll still be commenting on other blogs about the former series, and if you’d like to discuss the series, I’d be more than happy to do so.

EDIT: The courteous and courageous Zyl has offered to take up Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei. He’s awesome! Please do read his posts!

I like slice-of-life and centralized romantic series, though it's nice to have some focused action.

remember the hottest girl in your class?

Yep. Stalked the bitch for a month in high school. Best grades, face, body, etc. Now she’s a world-class model (i.e. pretty much a slut) who poses for pictures topless, so now i can see everything she has to offer without resorting to binoculars and hiding in the shadows.

I think you did a good job of getting me interested in this show. The premise indeed drove me away, as I am not interested in indulging in a primarily fanservice-driven show this season. If this turns out to be as funny as it is interesting, I’ll have you to thank again.

Same here; although Shuffle! was the second anime I’ve ever watched (and, admittedly, enjoyed), I soon lost interest altogether.

For me, at least, there were many funny moments. Be warned, however, that some of the jokes to feel a bit cliched in the beginning (ie, attempts by Yamada to get closer to Kosuda). However, as I mentioned earlier, the library scene makes up for it. If you do continue the series, enjoy it! I’m glad I’ve got you interested. =D

I never expected high levels of fanservice. If the girl isn’t having sex, she’s probably not serving too much.

Sure, sex means fanservice, but I’m not sure if the opposite is true. You see Shuffle! and other series that do not involve sex, and the fanservice (well, according to me at least) is still a big part of the series.

Then again, I might just be a pubescent teenager, so I expect sex in everything I see. o.O

I’ve been really enjoying B Gata H Kei. Like you, I was extremely turned off by the summary (I believe I described it in our season preview as ‘Ew.’), but gave the first episode a go because I’d heard good things about it around the ‘sphere. I laughed and cringed so, so hard! The humour is raunchy and pretty sharp, and less strictly random than what I’ve come to expect from anime comedies. I’m not so much of a fan of Yamada herself, but her antics leave me in stitches all the time. It’s so much fun to watch her because because I know people who act/ed the way she does. (They’re guys, though, so it wasn’t by any means charming.) Anyway, it’s kind of a hyper-real series – everything is so amped up and it’s a very crazy ride, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Now, I won’t go on and say more about my impressions because I essentially agree with every single thing you’ve said here. xD (Fantastic post, by the way! I really enjoy your writing style and the way you do episodics.)

I’m watching it with a friend over Skype (she’s in England), and we have so much fun. It helps that she’s female because I don’t feel guilty when watching it, as I inevitably would if I were doing it alone. Unfortunately, we’re still at episode five because of time zone differences and other RL conspiracies things. But we’re working on making a time to catch up, and I can’t wait. Hope you continue to have fun with it too!

The humor is rather raunchy, but I guess that’s why I like it. The “prudence” of Kosuda (more like his shyness and inexperience) mixed with the desperation of Yamada is quite hilarious.

Wow, you seem to have friends in every timezone! O_O But she sounds awesome; I’d like to hear those conspiracies thoughts. ;D

Enjoy the series!

B Gata H Kei is certainly the best comedy to come up in years (maybe since Minami-ke season 1). Anyone who isn’t watching this show is missing out.

I forgot to say this in my post, but I usually dislike anime comedies. (Yes, be shocked–I don’t find the humor presented very funny.) Example: Fanime Con 2010 marathoned One-Piece. The whole audience was erupting in laughter, and I could barely force out a chuckle (and I really mean force out). This is one of the very few times, then, where I’ve actually laughed at an anime comedy.

I’m glad that you enjoy it, and really–anyone who isn’t watching this really is missing out.

Just you wait! Episode 11 was probably the single funniest episode of anime I’ve seen in two or three seasons.

Episode 11 was beyond epic.
