Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 60 FMA2 60 05

I'd have more respect for Father if he held his smiley face gun gansta stylez

Summary:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 60 FMA2 60 01

Who knew? He's Lilith

As the siege at Radio Capital continues, Denny Brosh is sent in to be the negotiator and is surprised to find Maria Ross alive and well inside the building. After a tearful reunion, we focus on Bradley’s wife who is still distraught over whether or not her husband is still alive.

Back underground, Father explains to his human sacrifices that it’s useless to struggle as they are already in his belly. Even then, May Chang decides to challenge Father to a fight using her Eastern alchemy in order to steal his secret of immortality. With her lead, Ed and Al decide to fight Pride, whom Ed realizes was weakened after forcing Roy to perform human transmutation.

I'm looking for Roscoes Chicken and Waffles...

Meanwhile we flash back to the city as the Ishbal-jin make their move and start seizing the various points where Father’s transmutation circle will focus upon.

Bradley auditions for a role in the next Twilight movie

Back in the sewers, Bradley announces his pleasure at getting to fight it out with Scar using his last bit of strength. After a pitched battle, Scar reveals his secret weapon, his ability to perform constructive (as opposed to only destructive) alchemy, made possible by his now completed tattoo based on his brother’s research.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 60 FMA2 60 06

I would have personally went for a trebuchet...

Meanwhile in Father’s lair, the battle continues as Father creates an alchemy ‘gun’ to shoot at May Chang while Al heroically jumps in front of her to stop the bullets. Izumi contributes by creating a barista ballista to shoot giant arrows at Father. Ed and Pride continue their fight as Pride taunts Ed that he’s fighting someone smaller than him for the first time, but Ed will have none of it as he tells Pride that he knows how little guys fight. Just as Pride is about to be defeated by Ed, Father interjects as he grabs each of his sacrifices with tentacle arms protruding from his body.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 60 FMA2 60 09

Red team wins!

The solar eclipse has begun, and thus it is finally time for Father to put his plan into motion. He explains that the Earth is one giant system, one vastly more complex than any human could possibly be. By opening the Gate of Truth of Earth he will be able to gain unimaginable power and thus that is his plan. Before Father can act though, Greed jumps in from nowhere demanding to be the recipient of all of that power as he smashes Father’s figure to bits. Greed is no match for his Father though, as Father recovers instantly and laughs as he states that Greed has appeared just as he had planned. One last attempt by Hohenheim to stop Father by blowing up his alchemy chair contraption is of no use. With everything in place, Father’s body expands spherically and absorbs the centre of Central while a giant alchemy circle runs through the city and then Sloth’s tunnels and eventually all of Amestris.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 60 FMA2 60 07

Look who it is... it's Miles!!! And Grumman too

As the circle works it’s power, the scene in Xerxes centuries ago is repeated again as everyone in the country falls to their deaths, including Winry who has an extra long death scene.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 60 FMA2 60 10

Nekkid Rei he is not

As the episode comes to a close, an invigorated and giant Father reaches through the Gate of the Earth. Using his powers, he pulls Truth (coming from the moon) into his own body.

Summary:

After months and months of waiting (years for you manga readers, although I guess y’all saw this scene a while ago anyway) we’ve finally seen what Father’s plan is all about. I have to admit, that this plan is even more ingenious and ambitious than I’d ever imagined. Instead of just repeating Xerxes on a larger scale, Father is actually going for something exponentially larger, namely the power to know the ‘truth’ of the entire world and grasp that power for himself. The fact that Father is so seemingly successful at this point is a bit of a surprise but not really. Without obvious conflict the eventual victory of our heroes will not be as heroic, and as such Father is required to be ‘successful’ in his plans to rule the world for at least a split second. I of course would be extremely amazed if Father actually manages to just win after all, and the entire show ends on a very dark note, but considering the shonen nature of the show, I highly doubt it. The fact that the show went as far as to kill off everyone gives me more hope that various body parts will be restored when everyone eventually turns to their bodies alive and well. I mean if you can return from the dead, surely Ed and get his limbs back?

I thought overall this episode was a bit all over the place. There was simply too much, yet not enough happening at the same time. The entire opening scene with Denny Brosh and Bradley’s wife was completely pointless. The brief flashes of everyone we’ve seen so far in this show dying to Father’s power (well except the three Armstrongs who are out of the country!) was almost an ‘end of show montage’ but not quite. The multiple battles, and the brief and completely forgettable reintroduction of Greed also seemed tacked on. Of course all of this is useful for one reason, namely to set things up for our heroes eventual victory, and as a clear reminder of what was NOT shown.

Allow me to explain. During the ‘death montage’, we specifically did not see the Ishbal guys dying en mass at their alchemy circle checkpoints. We did not see Scar die from the red transmutation (merely being absorbed into the blackness) and we certainly did not see what happened to Dr. Marcoh and gang.

It’s important to note that it seems that the Ishbal guys and Scar are working in concert to stop Father using Scar’s brother’s research. The fact that we didn’t see him ‘die’ shows that he may do something next episode. The fact that the fate of Dr. Marcoh, arguably the most knowledgeable alchemist in Philospher’s Stones in the country (now that Gold Tooth is dead) was not shown to die is also important. This is all speculation of course. We did not see Ran Fan’s fate either, but I doubt she knows any alchemy to save the day. Finally, Greed’s appearance merely assembles our heroes all in one position, as once Ling gains back control there will be the perfect team for the  huge battle to come.

As for everyone being inside Father, it seems the guy’s entire lair is actually part of his body. This explains neatly how Hohenheim was defeated, although that was already strongly hinted at before. Funny though that not even Greed realized this. Was Father hiding things even to his own ‘children’ or did Greed just leave and betray before he ever found out?

One final note that I want to make is on the mystery of Scar’s new arm. It seems that he is now able to perform both destructive and constructive alchemy without clapping his hands or using a circle. His tattoo in other words gives him the power of Truth itself or so it seems. We know long ago that Scar had thought that his brother’s research was the key to everything, and so I really do believe that any resolution to our current dilemma rests with Scar.

I wonder if next episode will feature some weird reunion of souls between Winry and Al inside Father’s body or not?

*As always, I’ve stopped watching next episode previews, and NO SPOILERS PLEASE!*

The episode was insane, I agree, and gave me the same sort of chills that End of Evangelion gave me more than a decade ago. Three more episodes to go!

By the way, the manga ends this month!

I was hoping Ed and crew would put up more of struggle before Father got things going, but I suppose Father already had them on the ropes. Still, it was a spectacle though. The giant transmutation is a lot more fun to look at in animated form.

As for everyone being inside Father, it seems the guy’s entire lair is actually part of his body.

This was hinted at back in episode 56… when a giant eye appeared on the ceiling after Father threw away his “human” shell.

It seems that he is now able to perform both destructive and constructive alchemy without clapping his hands or using a circle. His tattoo in other words gives him the power of Truth itself or so it seems.

Not exactly… the tattoos ARE the transmutation circles. There are other alchemists who are like this (remember the Silver Alchemist from way back when? The tattoos on his palms didn’t even remotely resemble circles, but that was how his alchemy worked).

OK, on another note, recalling my freakout in last episode’s comments, it seems things are not quite as I’d thought… I guess there kind of, sort of, is a God? Oh well, I guess Ed doesn’t have to beat up Truth now since Father’s taken care of that for him! LOL so all he really has to do is just beat Father! :-D

I’ve seen this on the My Anime List forum for this show, and it bears repeating: Father with the gun, and eating God? He ain’t no Father anymore.

He’s the Godfather.

I’m not sure if this ‘proves’ that there is a ‘god’ in FMA. It just shows that even inanimate objects like the Earth have their own Gates of Truth, and that the more complex the thing, the bigger and more powerful the truth you learn from the gate.

My God Epi. Read about Kabbalah.

Tommy Vercetti June 8, 2010 at 12:26 pm

It’s kinda funny how everytime an episode comes out, Epi doesn’t get it.

You need to pay more attention, man. Scar’s arm was pretty easy to understand.

Left=reconstruction, changing shape, what Ed and Al constantly do
Right=Deconstruction, it can only just rip things to fragments

They say it, the three stages of Alchemy: Understanding (you have to know what you’re transmuting. Same goes for Scar. He tried to destroy Ed’s northern automail thinking it was iron, but it didn’t work because it wasn’t iron). Decomposition (breaking something down so you can reform it. Scar just stops at this point with his right arm)
Reconstruction (making into something new, like a wall, dome, or fixing something)

That is why Scar didn’t consider himself going against God’s will by recreating something, he was just deconstructing it.

Get it now?

Epi June 8, 2010 at 1:04 pm

I think you’re taking my one line too literally.

When I said ‘Scar has the power of Truth’ I just mean that he’s able to do alchemy without drawing circles or anything just like Ed, Al and Izumi. Some people like the old Mustang had gloves with circles pre-drawn, but those are only able to do the one specific alchemy reaction that the drawing allows (i.e. make fire). Although we haven’t seen any evidence of Scar doing anything else but make spikes from the ground, there’s a good possibility that he can do all types of alchemy now without drawing any complex circles.

Therefore, Scar’s tattoos possibly give him the same power as those who have seen Truth who can do any type of alchemy (yes as long as they understand it, it’s implied) without drawing complex alchemy circles.

Tommy Vercetti June 8, 2010 at 3:51 pm

But they don’t. Scar’s tattoos are the circles. There’s different kinds of transmuation circles than just literal circles.

The guy above me brought up Giolio Comanche. The tattoos are the what enable him to do the alchemy, they are the circles.

The right is only for decomposition, and the left is only for reconstruction. By clapping his hands, he combines them both (full alchemy) thus enabling him to pretty much be a standard alchemist.

He has no Truth power or anything, he’s just doing full alchemy now.

Wrath may be auditioning for Twilight, but he’ll never win the big part over Armstrong. He’s got built-in sparkles! Anything that will save the crew a bit of money is worthwhile.

here is a manga links so you can see the differences

the preview for this episode was not as spoilerish as the last 2 but i don’t recomend seeing it but here is one image i think you should see from it

Ps was it just me or did Bradley actully live up to his name of Wrath during his fight with Scar

clinton June 7, 2010 at 2:58 am

also how do you really see the good guys winning Father is now God ommipotant can do anything with a thought ( he was already like that but even more so now)

Reply

Epi June 7, 2010 at 11:38 am

One way I think the good guys can win is if they have some sort of introspection episode. Basically, all the souls now absorbed into Father are able to communicate with eachother, perhaps spurned on by the souls which Hohenheim controls, and they all decide to fight Father together. If everyone’s up for it I think that Father will be ripped apart and then the souls may return to their original bodies. On the way Ed and Al regain their bodies back (dunno about Izumi and Roy).

Another possible way I think is if the souls within Father somehow manage to trick Father into leaving his even bigger container, and Father evaporates.

And the last possibility and the one that is strongly hinted at is that Scar has found a way to stop father. Since he was absorbed into the blackness and not seen dying, he’s still alive and he’ll do SOMETHING which neutralizes Father.

one of the best episodes i guess.
BTW Epi, look at what the black general/officer said.
he said something about not dying if he’s at the center, and pride said “we will kill you later” or something like that to ed. so we can assume that few characters are still alive.

Reply

Epi June 7, 2010 at 11:35 am

I’m still doubtful that everyone else is actually fully ‘dead’. I mean they wouldn’t just kill Winry like that would they? But I guess the guys at the centre are ‘less dead’ than the guys who we’ve seen slumped over on the streets.

Apparently (and don’t quote me on this in case it turns out to me BS) theres a lot of talk on other blogs/forums that FMAb will be 64 episodes and not 63.

Mostly it comes from this article that states the last episode (64) will be aired on 04/07/10, a month from now. Wikipedia, ANN etc all have episode titles for 61-63 with 63 airing on 27/06/10.

Again, if this is true theres no guarantee that this 64th episode will actually be canon but with the 108th manga apparently being 150 page it could be possible as a concluding episode.

Does anyone know anything else to confirm/disprove this article

fathomlessblue June 7, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Much of the info/speculation can be found on the following forum. Its probably best that non-manga readers don’t check it out in case of spoilers

Apparently the page from my previous post is from Gangan magazine which is supposed to be quite reputable. Again, before people get excited i’m still not 100% convinced this isn’t a mistake or clever trolling but it seems very plausible at this stage.

Heres hoping.

Greedling June 7, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Okay, Epi, let me clear something up for you. And no, I’m not posting spoilers, why have you suspected me of such sacrilege?

If you need an alchemy array to perform a transmutation then you do not have any sort of “god-given” power. What makes Ed, Al, Izumi, Hoho, and possibly Mustang now so special is that they don’t need an array. Them clapping their hands becomes the array, that’s the circle, they are like the runes. But Scar has alchemy symbols and circles tattooed all over himself.

OK, I just want to know then… is the final chapter really 150 pages long? That’s all I wanna know…

Reply

Greedling June 8, 2010 at 11:43 am

I have no idea. I’m not reading it! But I lurk around the forums that usually get all this info pretty fast and has always been credible. Not going beyond the first page, and not clicking any of the links, I know that they have 69 pages now but they don’t have the full raw yet. So it very well could be that long.

Greedling June 8, 2010 at 12:45 pm

Okay, update. They have an almost full raw that is 69 pages but there are parts missing. I don’t think too much is missing though so it probably doesn’t reach the 150 mark.

Grey June 9, 2010 at 2:44 am

Huh… OK, sounds like it would be at most 75 – 80 pages. Good to know. I guess we can chalk this up to the one time Amber was wrong >.<

Greedling June 9, 2010 at 11:49 am

Ha, but Amber was wrong the last time too. Amber said 107 would be 80 pages and it was only 69.

I wasn’t putting too much stock in the 150 thing I was just hoping really hard >.< lol

Greedling June 9, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Okay, FULL RAW is out now.

113 pages :D DD That’s as good as 150 for me ^^

Grey June 10, 2010 at 1:27 am
