Angel Beats! 09

Harmonics was meant for threesomes AMRITE!?

Kabitzin has computer problems so here’s a pink mecha stand-in post.

Summary:

Yuzuru watches over an unconscious Kanade as Yuri and her core group fret over the likely likelihood of her awakening as Ranade. As an interim measure, Yuri has ordered Takeyama to seal her Angel abilities but knows that it is only a matter of time before she regains them. Yuzuru remembers, in a dream, that there’s a sequel to his SUNRISE ending trainwreck; he gave first aid to the survivors and then organized them, marshalling their resources, tempering conflict and, even in the darkest moment of despair, inspired everyone to sign their organ donor cards. Unfortunately, just as rescue was at hand, he died from an internal necrotic abdominal wound sustained during the initial impact.

He is awoken by an awakened Kanade who won over the other 100 Ranades because of Yuzuru’s earlier promise of more mapo tofu. She tells him that this is a world where the souls of troubled youths come to find peace by leading a normal school life that they never had the chance to have. But her awkwardness and stabby tendencies has led to Yuri being able to convince so many that they are here to fight against an unfair life and cruel fate. Yuzuru hatches a plan to put an end to the security dilemma and allow everyone, especially Yuri, to find peace. He secretly clears Kanade’s name, leading to her re-instatement as School Council President and gets her to pretend she has lost her good memories with the SSS.  While Kanade acts an opponent to distract Yuri, Yuzuru plans major anthropological fieldwork to find out everyone’s back story (in the remaining four episodes) but also wonders what lies beyond.

Reaction:

I wonder if Yuzuru knew that they were going to be rescued from the Sloth/Pride tunnel just before he died. Though it was probably too late for him already (necrosis of major organs is pretty much impossible to treat), he would have at least had the satisfaction of knowing most of the people he helped had survived because of him and that they had made it just in time for his organ donation pledge to be used too. This doesn’t change how he had his whole life ahead of him and all those potential “Thank you, Oniichan!”s cruelly taken away would have certainly qualified him for entry into the High School of the Afterlife though now the theory that a head impact causes memory loss in HSotA lies in ruins.

I also enjoyed the meeting where the Commanding Officer Yuri and her Principle Staff Officers were nearly shitting themselves in fear and almost praying to the God that they are rebelling against. But the cherry on the top was Yuzuru being stunned by Kanade’s Obvious Man explanation, complete with moe moe head tilt, about what the High School of the Afterlife was for and his belated realization that she had been trying to save them all from the start. Although their alliance and Ingenious Plan to Save Everyone seems to have gotten off to a good start, I find it hard to imagine how the SSS members, who have had really terrible pasts like Yuri, can change their current mindsets and do the Disappearing Act. What if Ranade is just pretending to be Kanade and has had Yuzuru completely fooled!? Reito fooled me with eye colour once before already, I won’t be so easily tricked again! Only mapo tofu can reveal the truth!

I have a penchant for Bishoujo, Oneesama and Yuri character dynamics. Genre-wise I enjoy drama and satire; tilt-wise I am terribly weak against self-consciously arty farty styles and reference humour. Sieg Lunamaria!

Sooo….necrosis of major organs causes memory loss now?

The way I interpreted it is that shifting from one plane to the other has a tendency to invoke memory loss (perhaps amplified if the person in question was majorly troubled). The memory loss is completely separate from any physical damage that might’ve occurred in the real world. . .else you’d see all sorts of crazy wounds…
Anyway, not even for a single moment did I consider the possibility that amnesia in the afterlife is the result of head trauma during life.

That sounds about right to me. Works whether one prefers a supernatural or technological explanation to the creation, entry and maintenance to this world.

this has me thinking a bit….

anyway yuri is pretty sharp so they’re plan might not be as successful as they think and from the preview it seems yui is next in line.

I wonder if the GirlDeMo lead singer position predisposes one to disappearing or the other way around.

Must see some Yui x Hinata love love before she disappears (if)!!

I’m wondering, assuming my dear Tenshi is back to her old self and not a more subtle version of her stab-first-ask-questions-later alternate, how Yuri is going to react to finding out or being told of Otonashi’s ‘betrayal.’ One by one the members of Yuri’s terrorist organization will begin disappearing, likely at a faster rate than people have before. How’s she going to react to that, and will she figure out Otonashi and feel betrayed, or will he end up telling her when she’s the last one left? That should be quite interesting.

On a personal note, that internal organ damage that Otonashi died from was a slightly uncomfortable to see. When I was 3 I was in a car crash and had a lot of internal organ damage (spleen and liver) and seeing Otonashi dying over several days from something similar was a little unsettling. Luckily for me I was taken quickly to a hospital and recovered fully except for a big scar, but it’s unusual and gave me a weird feeling to see such a similar injury in anime like that.

Given her behaviour thus far, Yuri only seems to throw tantrums about little things but is always takes the high road wrt big things. She has earned my respect in that way. If she realizes that Yuzuru meant well and wants her to be happy, it might lessen the blow a little or a lot depending on the circumstances and how she eventually finds out.

Wow, that was one terrible accident and injury. Glad to hear that you’re fully recovered. I had necrosis in my hand a few years back and managed to avoid having it amputated, just seeing the rotting blackness still gives me the creeps…

I don’t know, I get the impression that Yuri will go down swinging even if Otonashi does his best to convince her. But we’ll see how it goes. All I know is that I want Tenshi/Kanade to be happy in the end.

Eek, how’d that happen to your hand? Being able to see something like that happen to me would freak me the hell out, and that’s not even the potential consequences of it. I’m kind of happy that the car accident I was in was while I was so young. I can’t remember too much of it or the pain of it, which had to have hurt pretty badly…unless I actually died and THIS is the Angel Beats world!!! *dun dun duuunnnnn!*

Zyl May 31, 2010 at 11:18 pm

Their happiness comes from others being able to be happy: Yuzuru and Kanade are similar in that way. But, gods know, I feel for Yuri – holding on tightly to your pain can, in a perverse sort of way, give you a lot of strength.

Probably also the healing powers of Youth too. Mine was infection from a dog bite. Damn, that was some bug. Refused to die despite hydrogen peroxide (local) and amoxicillin (oral). Had to go for debridement under GA followed by three days on IV of a head-swimming antibiotic cocktail.

If THAT is the Angel Beats world, does that make Impz Tenshi?

My all caps was because I was too lazy to hit the italics button, but your idea intrigues me. Though I imagine Impz as more of a Yuri type character.

I found the manga version of the novel of angel beats track zero, its called angel beats heavens door and can be found at mangafox, it has so far followed the novel correctly…
it has hinata as the main character and it looks like he and yuri are going to be a couple already

Track Zero is a prequel and Hinata is the main character prior to Yuzuru’s arrival?

Thanks for the heads up though I would like to reserve that (and avoid any possible spoilers) until the anime is over.

its a prequel, it cant have spoilers and it is the manga version of the novel of angel beats, technically is the actual story
I heard that because there was only 13 ep, maeda had to remake the anime to fit it so if you probably want the original read the manga:
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/angel_beats_heaven_s_door/

I posted the link here since its hard to search in mangafox
oh and its even before the SSS even started, its about hinata and yuri making the group and also has hints of the pair hinataXyuri.

Thanks for the link but I really must dispute your point that prequels, by definition, can’t have spoilers.

Stars Wars Ep III spoils Ep V (Empire Strikes Back) rotten: Luke, *I* am your father!

Hah Reito never fooled me for a second. That guy was creepy from episode 1!

As for the head injury theory, I always thought that was a bit dumb. Isn’t it convention in ‘afterlife’ animes/movies/TV shows that people always start out with amnesia? It’s just one of those things.

I’m a bit lost as to what injury Yuzuru had exactly which made him die. If he had any sort of internal bleeding, I think 7 days is too much time for him to have stayed alive, especially to have the kind of energy and strength that he did for a lot of that time. The area which was paining wasn’t his spleen either (although a ruptured spleen would have killed him much sooner as well). If I were to guess, he probably had some blunt trauma to his colon, which caused some very minor bleeding which clotted up immediately. And then this got infected and got him killed. Of course he would have showed other signs (i.e. fever) but hey this is anime after all.

I just had this feeling: Are you a doctor or work in medical services, i.e., are you living Yuzuru’s dream!?

If only you used instant messaging we’d be much better acquainted :(

Tried to set up AIM but gave up. I’ve never really had much luck with IM clients even in the ancient times of ICQ…

I think the best strategy is to take Yuri on right away. With her gone, it will be much easier to clean up the remaining SSS members.

I don’t think that Yuri will go until the rest of the SSS members are gone. Her trauma is losing her siblings to a cruel fate, so she probably won’t be healed until she loses all of her team members to happiness to balance that out. After she’s able to let them go, or helps “save” them if Otonashi proves to be persuasive enough, I think she’ll finally be able to forgive herself for not being able to save her family.

Also:

Harmonics was meant for threesomes AMRITE!?

He might want to get Yuri to revoke that 10 second time limit…. ;)

Now we know the real reason why Yuri put that hack in and why she did it herself instead of asking Takeyama!

I liked this episode. The tunnel part was actually quite touching.

What if Ranade is just pretending to be Kanade and has had Yuzuru completely fooled!?

I have faith in Kanade. ^ ^
Plus, there doesn’t seem to be enough episodes left for this type of surprise.
