Working!! 08

Zyl on May 26, 2010 · in Working!! Season 1

Once upon a time, there was a girl called Yamada who wanted 100 casual sex partners...

Summary:

Steamy onsen fruitcakes are, indeed, so yummy

A burst water main puts Wagnaria out of action for the weekend and the girls decide to make a day trip to the hot springs. Souta is worried because of the danger to the public posed by Mahiru. Nazuna takes over sunning the dried plums, allowing him (with Hiromi tagging along to see the entertainment) to intervene just in time. The two take a walk, hand-in-magic-hand, around the hot springs town and have a nice moment on a suspension bridge with a scenic view. Because everyone dallied, there was no time for hot hot springs fanservice; the girls take Kyoko’s car back and the guys hitch a ride home with Jun.

Reaction:

But Souta likes 'em small and cute...

Surprisingly Aoi (who remembers to call herself Yamada) did not make too much of a nuisance this episode; I liked how everyone was more worried about her ransacking the restaurant in their absence than her being lonely – reminded me of the retort to the boast about how the sun never set on the British Empire because God did not trust them in the dark. It was also nice to see how Aoi and Poplar formed a Hot Springs Alliance and then a Kappa Alliance (Aoi = Maria?; Poplar = Nino?).

The series continues its The Guys Have It Tough dynamic, also featured in the ED – Jun had to give everyone a ride at great risk to his own personal safety and then when his car ran out of fuel, got abandoned on the roadside after alternative/originally indented transport in the form of awakened manju-hungry Kyoko came to the rescue. And when he finally caught up, Yachiyo had already gone home. Even Hiromi, who thought he could be an observer, got Oniichan-ed by Aoi and forced to look after her and Poplar as they ran around the town while Yachiyo accompanied Kyoko on her food sampling.

Of course, the real meat of this episode was Souta x Mahiru; latter really has been lavished with some animation budget love. Although he was correct in his initial assessment, he soon joined the (guilt) trip after realizing how badly Mahiru just wanted to have a fun day out with her friends, something that she has never been able to do at all. It was also really nice of him to tell her that he was able to see the great view from the bridge because of her and that it’s her androphobia, not her that is the Enemy. It was somewhat expected that the androphobia would reassert itself just after that nice scene but it just goes to show you, in life, even with the prettiest words and most beautiful feelings, some things are still more or less impossible.

Chain Reaction:

  • Raph also loves magic hand and makes an excellent point about its introduction, use of a recurring joke and transformation into a motif cum plot device: “I think it’s fantastic that the series has turned what was seemingly a one-time joke into a catalyst for the improvement of a key relationship, because that’s something I rarely see in any medium, and I believe it’s something that makes Working!! special.”
  • Another pretty good gauge of how much one would enjoy this series depends a lot on how much one enjoys the developments on the Souta x Mahiru front. Though Aroduc (who also loves magic hand) is still sticking it out despite how “The Claw missed its golden opportunity to throw her off the bridge in the middle of her sob spiel. I guess it’s not perfect after all.”

I have a penchant for Bishoujo, Oneesama and Yuri character dynamics. Genre-wise I enjoy drama and satire; tilt-wise I am terribly weak against self-consciously arty farty styles and reference humour. Sieg Lunamaria!

The quickest way to increase bust size on the cheap is to get pregnant. I’m just saying…

Aoi improved a little bit for me, since she was so annoying to the other characters, although she tends to turn Poplar into just-another-little-kid. I guess they are sticking Aoi and Hiromi together, but since they get the fewest good moments, maybe it is for the best. Jun really missed out this episode on sitting with Yachiyo on the way up and getting hand-fed some gum. Now he’ll probably have to hear countless jokes from Hiromi about how he couldn’t pull the trigger when the time was right (although he did go off and fap right after thinking of Yachiyo at the onsen).

This onsen episode must have had the least fanservice of any onsen episode I’ve ever seen. At least we got Magic Hand fanservice.

Bust size. But that’s not a permanent transmutation… right?

Aoi x Hiromi are just made for each other – both are rogue class.

LOL Jun fapping – it’s even funnier how his onsen image of Yachiyo isn’t pervy at all with her in her yukata, much more classic Yamato Nadeshiko.

Magic Hand fanservice > Onsen fanservice (which is covered by steam anyway)

I was a bit disappointed, and it wasn’t because of lack of onsen fanservice…ok maybe a little bit of fan service could have made up for it, but I want to see more of Souta X Mahiru. Actually I was expecting too much development in one episode, but these things take time. Mahiru’s Androphobia can’t be fixed over night, but I”m excited how Souta proclaimed that he would help Mahiru to fixing her problem. Major Kudos for him.

In the preview, omg!!! Souta is dressing up as a girl again!!! And here I thought he wouldn’t be such a cute girl when he get older.

Souta x Mahiru, in this episode, had that back-and-forth thing that I’m generally wary of but it still felt like two steps forward, one step back rather than one step forward, one step back with the way Souta felt compelled to go to the hot springs to meet Mahiru and Mahiru nearly getting her flag seriously triggered (plus only hitting him once).

is that yamada’s name on her shirt? if so she’s also knitted her (fake)name on her shirt, smart girl.

aoi goes good with poplar, both are cute together.
we also have a new pair: aoiXhiroomi

Yes, that’s Ya Ma Da on her gym shirt. That’s another amusing thing about Aoi – she tries to cover up on her lies but her execution is just so lousy e.g. her lie last ep about her house burning down and losing all her possessions but then wheeling out her suitcase. For the above-mentioned, she doesn’t even know the (very simple) kanji for her fake surname Yamada and the sewing is crooked, making it obvious that her real family name is underneath.

I FEEL SO CHEATED OUT OF THIS ONSEN EPISODE AS THERE WAS NO ONSEN SCENES

Meh I watch this series nearly exclusively for the Yachiyo – Jun interaction…
Happy there was some present in this episode…but not enough, NEVER ENOUGH.

No onsen scenes was a total tease. What’s next? Trap episode with no trap? :(

Yeah no fanservice, but I’m actually fine with that in this series. Like I always say, “If you’re not going to do an ecchi series, don’t do it. But if you’re going to do it, try to do better than the best!” Like how seikon no qwaser said, “Hmm, people who get powers from sucking on women’s bosoms… May as well go all out!”

Anyways I’m waiting for your next blog on ep.9 Zyl so I can comment on that! *Gives Kabitzen a whip with tiny nails embedded in it.*

I love watching these characters and their relationships. Ep.9 gives Mahiru x Souta some more <333 points! Really really cute!
