Angel Beats! 08

Hurry guys, I can only last 5 minutes tops!

Summary:

Don't hate the Angelplayer, hate the Angelgame

Kanade intercepts Ranade, but the clash lands Kanade in the hospital.  Ranade appears to be a byproduct of the Harmonics skill, which Kanade had developed to produce a clone optimized for aggression and offense.  Yuri has no choice but to break into Kanade’s room; unfortunately she doesn’t bring Takeyama along and can’t RTFM because it’s in English.  Rather than call for support, Yuri just adds a 10-second timewait command (even though there is already a delay command) and bundles it with Harmonics and Absorb.  Unfortunately, when they return to tell Kanade the good news, they discover she’s been kidnapped by Ranade.

Yuri calls on the SSS to venture down to the destroyed Guild to retrieve Kanade, but the way is blocked by all the Ranade clones that used Harmonics prior to Yuri’s update.  Matsushita realizes that the Japanese way to advance is to kamikaze rush little Ranade and then grope pin her for some boring lay n’ pray.  One by one the SSS members fall, but Yuri is able to neutralize the final Ranade clone with some Howling-proof earplugs.  However, when Yuzuru convinces Kanade to activate the modified Harmonics skill, Kanade ends up absorbing all the aggression of the Ranade clones.

Reaction:

Don't throw her, just shoot her in the head!

Although the journey down to Guild was funny, the plan was suspect.  The SSS could have gotten down with only a few casualties by having Ayato hypnotize the first pinned Ranade clone, convincing the Ranade clone to be friendly, and then impaling the captured Ranade clone on the next Ranade clone.  Then, rinse and repeat.  Granted, you don’t get to grope Ranade, but you do get a lot of Ranade on Ranade action and the modified Harmonics would have resulted in a really friendly Kanade, instead of a really bitchy Kanade who insists you cuddle now even though you’re tired and just want to go to sleep.

The battle scenes were very smooth and made up for the iffy normal animation, and again I loved the humor.  I also like that the side characters are kept shallow to prevent them from stealing episodes from the main plot or the main characters.  In spite of all of Kanade’s protests about not being an Angel or a script kiddy, it was telling that she coded all her powers in Angelplayer.  I liked Yuri more and more this episode, as she was quite capable in battle.  I’m sure the super-saturated Kanade will come up with some more important answers, and it sounds like Yuzuru remembers something important next episode.

Great episode just watched this last night and died laughing at the “grope” scenes, Tk had the best death or Yui not sure if she “died” or not but still very funny.

Oh yeah, where did that dog plushie come from? It’s shadow took me by surprise. And TK continues to entertain me. I love his english.

TK’s “normal” class behavior made no sense at all ~^^~

I liked how most of the later deaths were glossed over and the director skipped right to where the SSS member is dry-humping Ranade while the rest of the SSS (occasionally) screamed in distress. I kept wondering if Yui was going to wet herself, but she suffered a skiing accident so now we’ll never know.

I like the way they keep the minor characters simple as well. They give a handful of them a little bit of depth to add that little extra layer to make some of their jokes that much funnier, but at heart they’re there for the laughs and excel excellently at that. If they really spent an episode developing TK’s character it might just ruin his entertainment factor

Yeah, I get the feeling that TK’s, Noda’s, and Shiina’s would be really depressing. I wonder if they will get a flashback, since we’re running low on episodes. Maybe there will be a flashback montage…

Dang, at the end I really had a bad feeling about their plan, but I didn’t think it would be this bad. I hope Kanade doesn’t turn into Ranade. I’m not a fan of girls with red eyes, and I really like Kanade’s golden eyes. Reminds me of some kitten or something.

I wish they didn’t go over broad with the whole “taking one for the team” bit. And the last few grope attacks didn’t seem like they pinned Ranade down.

You assume that Ranade didn’t want the grope attack to succeed

there were 2 Ranade behind them so they couldnt take their sweet time with the other Ranade, though i found it weird why they didnt chase them .

It’s possible Ranade wanted Kanade to absorb all the bad juju. If Ranade knew to stop using Harmonics after the program modification (because wouldn’t that have resulted in just one really mean Ranade?), then she was probably aware of the SSS’s plan all along.

they did try to chase them, yuri held them off while the others went in the steel door.
or did you mean why they didnt break the door? well they might not have thought about it or like kabitzin said, they probably planned it cause one had a grin when the timer went out.

I saw the preview for ep 9 and it showed that yuzuru did survive the accident and that there are other survivors in the same accident.

naoi had the funniest suicide:
“hey, someone say something”-hinata
“well I dont know his name”-yui

I assume that Ayato is incapable of hypnotizing Kanade and her clones. After all, if he could I’m sure that controlling her would have made it easier to become “god”

Late, but oh well~

by having Ayato hypnotize

Why not have him hypnotize them and have them use Absorb? Much easier.

Sigh, honestly, I just want them to figure out what this world really is so we can have the big reveal and I can stop caring about anything else. All this ‘sacrificing’ people has gotten so old since they’re alive and kicking in the next episode or as few as a couple minutes. Oh no, they’ll have to wait for a rez, heaven forbid! Naoi was the most threatening villain of all because he brought in the possibility of actually making them disappear from the world… but then they go and LET’S BE FRIENDLY and yaoi him into submission.

This is why fishing sucks. You end up with a huge mess…
I actually really enjoyed this episode though. Made me chuckle here and there.

I’ve never liked Yuri’s beret but her meganekko form was surprisingly cute.

IIRC the episode preview in Ep 7 mentioned something about how the system needs the existence of Angel? Don’t think I actually heard it in this episode though. If that’s the case, absorbing the Ranade Rei Mob could be the system’s way of cancelling Yuzuru’s befriending and resetting Angel to enforcement mode.
