Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 57 FMA2 57 01

Oh noes! That thing's been on the BATHROOM FLOOR

Summary:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 57 FMA2 57 02

I wouldn't mind being interrogated by them... hohoho

After a teasing glimpse of Ran Fan and a quick recap of the end of last episode, we arrive back at the Office of the President, where Izumi and Olivier are interrogating the general whom they have captured. After admitting to the entire immortal army plan and even admitting that he knew of King Bradley’s ‘creation’, the central soldiers who are in the room finally decide to think for themselves and cast their loyalties with Olivier. Meanwhile, as word of Bradley’s return spreads, the Central forces start regaining on the Briggs soldiers, and Izumi proposes that everyone evacuate to fight another day.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 57 FMA2 57 03

From suicide bomber to human swiss cheese... poor Grandpa Fu

Back underground Ed, Roy, Riza and Scar run into the Gold Toothed Alchemist, the guy who made Bradley and had previously revived Kimblee after Scar impaled him on the train. Happy that Mustang arriving has ‘saved him time’, he uses his army of ‘failed’ King Bradleys to attack our heroes while he sets about drawing a complicated alchemy circle.

Back above the battle between GreedLing, Fu and Bradley continues. After a long fight, Fu is mortally wounded and decides to charge at Bradley as a suicide bomber, but Bradley disables his explosives with a swipe of his sword. Smug that he has defeated the old guy, Bradley is caught off guard when Buccaneer comes out of nowhere to stab him by stabbing him through Fu. With the sword previously in him taken out, Buccaneer lies down dying from blood loss while Fu is done for as well while a recently arrived RAN FAN looks on and cries out.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 57 FMA2 57 04

Chow Yun Fat would be proud

Meanwhile Al, Yoki, Dr. Marcoh and Heinkel have managed to arrive at Central within sight of HQ. Back underground, everyone has trouble with the ‘failed Bradleys’ with the exception of Riza who makes short work of them with her double pistol power. Meanwhile as the Armstrongs escape with Izumi, Olivier has a heart to heart with her and learns exactly what the sacrifice of human transmutation really is before telling her to escape with her husband as the soldiers will fight on to the end.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 57 FMA2 57 05

Oh... SNAP

Calling back some of the ‘failed Bradleys’, the Gold Toothed Alchemist starts his transmutation circle, which creates a pentagon design and quickly runs through all of the alchemy research labs across Central City. Before anyone can do anything, the power of the transmutation circle brings out some of the shadow arms from the Gate of Truth which grab and dematerialize Ed, Izumi, and Al as a horrified Roy Mustang looks on.

Reaction:

Well, well, well. It looks like it has finally started, and just the way that Father had planned it too. Before we get to that though, some notes about the rest of the episode.

I was a bit surprised to see that Buccaneer sending himself to his grave, if only because it marks the first likely character death since Hughes (whose death was an important plot point and thus wasn’t so random). Of course the fact that his sacrifice led to a mortal wound to Bradley, coupled with Olivier’s talk about soldiers never getting sad for the dead, at least show that while a huge loss, his death will be accepted by his comrades, and possibly even celebrated as an act of a true warrior. Fu’s death meanwhile was inevitable (and besides… he’s old anyway) and easily predicted once we saw him get emotional over Bradley being responsible for Ran Fan losing her arm. Grandpa Fu becoming a suicide bomber was interesting to say the least. This show has now officially made it okay to cheer for beating up little kids (Pride), thinking World War I style machine gun fire is okay (Falman), and okay to cheer for suicide bombers.

While I was of course a bit sad that Ran Fan was not able to do much this episode, I was none the less happy to see that she hasn’t been forgotten as she managed a brief cameo, speaking part included.

The ‘fake Bradley’ fight was fun to watch as well. After a few episodes where Roy Mustang seemed absolutely invincible, it’s nice to see that at least that there is a way to stop him: by moving so fast he can’t aim his fire, and attacking him before he can snap his fingers. It was cool to see everyone absolutely flustered by the Bradleys, but Riza making short work of them with her double pistol action. I like how every fight in this show is unique, and that no one character has a monopoly in being overpowered. In every fight, every character has a certain weakness and strength, and this power may be the deciding factor. Even Father and Hohenheim counter each other which makes them less invincible as well.

Finally we’ll get to the end of the episode, the start of the alchemy of the promised day.

There has long been talk about who the ‘sacrifices’ actually are, and Mustang was always listed as a maybe. Considering he was not dematerialized with Ed, Al and Izumi, it looks though that he definitely is not, and that fits, considering we’ve never had any hint of him attempting human transmutation (real soldiers accept death after all). The question is of course what of Hohenheim? He was listed as one of Father’s chess pieces, but we do not know his fate, nor has there ever been any serious hint of him attempting human transmutation before as well. Also does the fact that Roy was actually not useful as a sacrifice make a real difference to Father’s plans? You would think that his plans hatched eons ago would not so rely on people who had not even been born yet who may or  may not attempt human transmutation in the future. As such, the reasons for the ‘human sacrifices’ still remain unknown at the moment, nor do we know whether they are crucial for the plan or whether they are bonuses.

And what of the Gold Toothed Alchemist? It seems almost as if this guy is immortal. He looked more or less the same the day Bradley was ‘created’ and Bradley is already about 60 years old. I wonder if the Gold Toothed guy is actually one of Father’s minions (on par with a Homunculus) or if he has some Philosopher Stone power within him. For Father to so rely on this guy to bring his plan into fruition shows how much he trusts him, and I wonder if Father would ever trust any random human no matter how twisted to do the job right. Well that is unless this isn’t even the REAL plan but just a way to get rid of our heroes (perhaps those who have previously attempted human transmutation will screw up Father becoming a perfect being).

One last thing…

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 57 FMA2 57 07

RAN FAN!!!

Next Episode looks to be a continuation of the GreedLing Bradley fight where concievably Bradley will be defeated once and for all. Interesting to note is that while Ed, Al and Izumi have been dematerialized, everyone else is still going on as if nothing’s happened yet. I fully expect a full introspection type episode where Ed, Al and Izumi will be confronted by their previous human transmutation failures within the Gate of Truth.

Haha, and guess what he said as he was being smacked away: To da loo!

Buccaneer was cool, but the problem with his plan is that you are supposed to put some mushrooms, onions, or peppers in between pieces of meat on your shishkabob. What? Too soon?

And someone needs to dematerialize Ran Fan’s ugly mask as soon as possible.

Everytime I typed dematerialize, I thought of MATERIALIZE (Mai-HiME stylez)

Your summary is entertaining as always, and your thoughts on the episode are a pleasure to read through.
Your note on how every character has certain strengths and certain flaws in combat, and how they come through (0r not) in different situations, was something I hadn’t really picked up on while watching the episode, but it’s totally accurate. As for Hohenheim as a “human sacrifice”, it may be that what is required is not to have performed human transmutation, but to have seen the Gate.

Epi May 18, 2010 at 12:43 am

Good point. Hohenheim did see the gate during the end of Xerxes. I just wonder what the significance of it all is.

If you give someone two guns, they think they’re God … but Riza has so many guns! I wonder what kind of deity she would be?

I like her guns, but Winry’s are better :x

Twas nice to see Mustang actually having to do some hand to hand fighting – usually he just has to stand back, look cool and click his fingers; this week he actually had to move and punch!

The Gold toothed guy looks the same?

You should look again. He’s got wrinkles and age spots all over. He was about 30 or so when they created Wrath, now 40 years later, he’s about 70. I wish they had left his tooth missing; they did when he healed Kimblee, and it added to his age. Ah well.

Hohenheim didn’t get sucked in because he’s already there. Father is just teleporting everyone to his spot (did you see the giant eyeball above his head last episode?) Hohenheim is a sacrifice. He’s just already there.

Well don’t ruin it. Know knew for sure where everyone was going when this happened in the manga >_>

No spoilers please!!!

I guess the gold toothed guy did age some, but I always thought he looked a bit old even in the Bradley making scene.

i just watched the 14 episode of the english dub and just looking at pride acting so cutesy is horrible

on topic i remember how you thought buccaneer was not going to die funny how two just died

and Greedling got a good hit he took out Bradley’s super eye

i dislike the line that greed said when Ling took over the real line was “Ling tell me before you take over” its amazeing how well they get along

Epi May 18, 2010 at 12:46 am

Yeah, yeah I guess he’s gunna die. At least SOMEONE’S going to die. Was getting tired of everyone living within an inch of their life.

Cornwiggle May 17, 2010 at 7:55 pm

The entire dub was poorly acting. Greed trying to scream was a riot.

It’s very low quality english dubbing.

what no i loved it i really liked it its just that i know that he is evil creepy 300 year old monster and its creepy if look back on the series and look at him

Of course you’d like the terrible dub…

fathomlessblue May 18, 2010 at 12:56 pm

@Cornwiggle

Of course you’d make a sarcastic comment to anyone who thinks anything contrary to you’re own opinion… Its called personal taste mate. The quality of the dubs is a matter of opinion and nothing more. None of us are more right or wrong than anyone else in those regards.

@Clinton

I also quite like the dubs. Saying that there are quite a few VA’s that just don’t sound anything the Japanese actors (Ed and King Bradley immediately spring to mind). Its not that think they’re bad its just weird listening to the same characters with such different voices. Thats why i’m not gonna bother seeing the rest of the dubs till the series is over.

Tavor TAR-21 May 21, 2010 at 7:40 pm

I’ve never liked Mignogna as Edward, ever. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to him. And I think Patton absolutely fails as Greed (CHRIS Patton, not George, lol).

That said, though, there were some pretty strong performances in the dub. After watching 14, I really feel like Whitehead has slipped into the role of Al perfectly; there was nothing in there that made me raise an eyebrow unlike some of the very early episodes.

And Blaylock, hooo boy, this guy sounds nothing like Shibata as Bradley but damn does he make it work. My friends and I joke that he’s like a more hardcore version of Mayor Haggar from Final Fight, so it was pretty awesome to hear a tough Texan dude go from asskicking badass to doting dad at the drop of a hat.

Father sucks, though. I didn’t like that Father and Triple H have different voices in the Japanese (c’mon, he’s supposed to be something like a clone for crying out loud), I was hoping the English would be different, but I don’t want to hear Kent Williams as Triple H…

I’ve been wondering..if I’m not wrong,May Chang and the other chimeras were with Ed and Scar right? When did they separate from them??

And Epi,I feel Riza’s better than Ran Fan :) Especially with her hair open! I’m glad that she grew her hair after seeing Winry :)
[This is shown in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood OVA...there are 2 OVAs..how about you blog about them too!!]

Clinton May 17, 2010 at 11:29 pm

the chimeras were with them but Ed and Scar left them to check on mustang

Reply

Epi May 18, 2010 at 12:46 am

What Clinton said. They separated in the sewers when Ed and Scar decide to fall back to look for Roy. For whatever reason I never watched the OVAs… I have them on my computer, just never watched them. Will get around to them eventually!

Oh yeah,now I remember :P
You know what, the manga is getting way too interesting!
You’ll love to see how the story goes in the end :)

Amy Pond May 18, 2010 at 12:07 am

Yes! Blog about the two OVAs! (if your allowed to or whatever)

And yeah, maybe you just need to see the Gate to be a human sacrifice. And he needs FIVE sacrifices total. Hasn’t been made clear why yet, but that’s what he needs. And his plans rely on having those five, it’s not like Mustang is special, there’s not some fate thing going on here. His plan just relies on needing five sacrifices and finding people who have seen the Gate (seen it and survived even) isn’t the easiest thing to do

Oh yeah, I thought you’d be more concerned about your girl, Epi ;) Her grandpa just died and she was all sad. What, no offering of comfort from you?

Reply

Epi May 18, 2010 at 12:49 am

What can I say… megane Misa-chan has won me over this week. If Ran Fan would just take her mask off and cry then you betcha there would be comforting!

Hey thanks Clinton :)
Earlier I thought there were only 2 OVAs…I saw the 3rd one today. It was quite funny :)

Amy Pond May 18, 2010 at 6:29 pm

Oh yeah. I’ve seen that one. Just forgot about it momentarily. >_< I guess that might be because I sorta wish they hadn't of done it. I'd rather them have done any of the other omakes by Arakawa over that one.

Not that I don't like that one, but they have a limited number of OVAs they can do and that one may have been the last. I would have loved to see one of the more serious ones animated. Like Long Night. Alphonse <3

well he trusted the generals and told them the plan and everything (that one that brought the doll soliders out said “if we don’t use them now when will we ever” meaning that they knew everything)

they planed on becoming like father and it looks like he was going to let them

Reply

Mei May 18, 2010 at 1:40 am

actually there are 3 OVAs: The Blind Alchemist, Simple People, and Tales of the Master.

Epi’s powers of prediction sure has some major ups and downs. Before you totally called the way to defeat Pride, now you’re totally wrong about Buccaneer not dying. *sings Dr. Cox’s “You’re Wrong” song from Scrubs* lol, kidding.

Watching the fight with the “failed Bradleys”, I can’t help but think of Mustang as one of the Glass Cannon/Mage type characters of RPGs/MMORPGs. He can nuke stuff like crazy from a distance, but once you close in on him, his melee skills suck, and melee attacks cuts through him like a hot knive through butter and totally floors him…if you know what I mean ;D

I guess that makes Riza the Ranger/long-range physical attack type, Scar the Warrior/short-range physical attack, and Ed…the Tank? He does have higher defence due to his metal limbs and the ability to transmute insta-walls, and he does have a way with aggro-ing people, but then again, he can be aggro’ed very easily himself.

I’m such a nerd XD

Fu might just be the most badass person I’ve ever met. He’s like 50 and still manages to fight Bradley, and even sacrifices himself to takes some lives off of Wrath.

Reply

Epi May 18, 2010 at 12:13 pm

I think Fu is older than that! Bradley acknowledged his age, and Bradley’s going onto 60.

Reply

fathomlessblue May 18, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Great ep, if you’re going to go down fighting in battle you’d be hard pushed to find something more awesome than Fu and Buccaneers sacrifice. It was quite touching how even indirectly Fu’s death helped hurt Wrath, especially after thinking he’d failed in his attack and lost his honour. Plus the look on Wrath’s face after getting stabbed and then having his ultimate-eye gouged out by Ling was priceless.

Seriously though, wtf was up with the animation of Mustung fighting the rejects? He looked like some kind of Muppet. Seems a staple of this series that for every scene thats excellently animated theres another that leaves you shakin your head. Guess Bones is a little too into the concept of equivalent exhange…

Question: As I recall, Mei-chan was last seen in the company of Ed, Scar, Mustang, Hawkeye, and Dr. Marco. Yet she was absent from the last episode, in which all of them fought the Wrath rejects. Where was she? Did I miss something? I kinda liked the kid :(

Reply

fathomlessblue May 22, 2010 at 10:51 am

This question was already kinda answered in a earlier post but what the heck.

For a start Dr Marcoh hasn’t been with Mei for a while, he’s currently with Heinkel, Yoki and until the end of the last episode Al (who got transmuted away along with Ed and Izumi).

Basically when Roy and Hawkeye went after Envy, the group conisting of Ed, Scar, Mei, Jerso, Zampano and Darius went to confront Father. However, Ed and Scar decided to turn back and help Roy who had gone a little nuts. Mei and the chimeras didn’t go with them and carried on trying to find fathers lair.

So essentially the current group order is

*Ed, Al, Izumi = Missing
*Greedlin, Falman, Ran-Fan, Fu (dead) and Buccaneer (dead?) = Central HQ entance
*Sig plus Alex and Oliver Armstrong= Cental HQ secret stairway
*Roy, Hawkeye and Scar = Sewers/Father Lair
*Marcoh, Heinkel and Yoki = Outside cental HQ
*Mei and the chimeras = Sewers/Fathers Lair
*Roys subordiates = Central radio station
*Miles and Grumann = Blind drunk on mojitos somewhere in the east… probably

Hope that helps

Reply

Wolf May 22, 2010 at 11:01 am

Indeed it does, thanks. I’d confused the two sets of chimeras — those with Mei and those who had been with Al.
