Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56

by Epi on May 9, 2010 in Full Metal Alchemist 2

I don’t have much to say about the previous two episodes which have already been nicely covered by Zyl in my absence, please refer to my comments if you wish. Well I guess I do have one thing, which is that I never realized before, but Envy looks like a certain body part (well minus the teeth anyway).

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56 FMA2 56 02

Father tries some mopo tofu from the school cafeteria

Summary:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56 FMA2 56 01

All these guys are missing is a bad Chinese accent... talk about stereotypes!

We flash back a few thousand years in the aftermath of the destruction of Xerxes as Hohenheim collapses after aimlessly wandering the desert but is saved by some passing Xing merchants. As they carry him away, he mutters something to himself about being sorry to someone for ‘not being able to stop him’. We flash forward back to the present day as we return to the end of the previous episode with Hohenheim confronting Father. He explains to Father that he has spent all his time talking with each and every one of the 536,329 souls contained within him and has promised to use their souls to defeat Father. In fact, he even knows exactly which souls Father absorbed, and it is those souls which promptly work to eat up Father’s ‘flesh’ (aka the copy of Hohenheim’s body) in an attempt to destroy the container of the Homunculus and thus destroy Father.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56 FMA2 56 03

Father makes the Mission Impossible face thing look like child's play

The souls manage to destroy the body but Father manages to stay alive even with it’s destruction as he sheds his skin to reveal his true self (looking like a cross between the Truth guy at the GATE OF TRUTH and Pride). A stunned Hohenheim looks on as Father taunts him that he can not so easily destroy he who is destined to be a perfect being.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56 FMA2 56 04

Holy. Frigging. Shit.

Back on the surface, King Bradley returns and makes short work of the Briggs soldiers guarding the rear gate. Easily slicing up all of the bullets and the soldiers shooting them, Bradley runs into the gate as the tank reverses up the ramp into headquarters in retreat. After easily defeating the tank, he reaches the top of the wall where Buccaneer and his group are waiting.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56 FMA2 56 05

:( but then again, given this show's track record you know he's not going to die

Despite his best efforts Buccaneer is defeated and Bradley recognizes Falman who refuses to step aside. Before Bradley kills Falman GreedLing suddenly appears to challenge Bradley.

Back at the radio station, word has arrived that Bradley has returned, and his wife lets down tears of joy at the news. Realizing that their gambit in using their support for the missing king to legitimize their coup d’etat has failed, Mustang’s group quickly distance themselves from the Briggs soldiers and blame Olivier for the battles in the city as Fury and Maria Ross realize that their plan has backfired on them.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56 FMA2 56 07

Apparently Bradley is... THE ONE

Back at HQ, the Greedling/Bradley battle goes into full swing as Bradley unfurls his all-seeing-eye and explains that the power of his eye let him easily escape Gundam SEED: Destiny the train wreck. Buccaneer intervenes and takes Bradley’s sword in his abdomen in an attempt to disarm the Furher, but all is for naught as Bradley picks up some blades from a nearby fallen soldier.

With the return of Bradley, the Central troops which have rallied back defeat the leftover Briggs troops from the rear gate (who were not killed by Bradley earlier) and advance upstairs. Realizing this, Falman decides to go World War I on them and keeps them at bay with heavy machine guns.

As the pinned down Central soldiers radio their compatriots inside HQ to defeat the Briggs soldiers and open the front gate, they radio back that the dolls are still amuck and cannot let them out. While the garrison commander tries to make sense of what this means, he’s suddenly taken down by a mysterious warrior.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 56 FMA2 56 09

My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father... prepare to die

The mysterious warrior easily runs past Falman’s guns and attacks and disarms Bradley and is revealed to be RAN FAN’s grandfather. He is back to protect Ling’s body from being hurt. Wondering why he could not defeat this man even with the two of them, GreedLing tells him it’s King Bradley and grandfather’s eyes light up in anger at the man who took RAN FAN’S arm.

Reaction:

I was pretty impressed with this episode overall as it contained two major things: one being the revelation of Hohenheim’s inner Dr. Phil, and the other of the awesome battle. After last week’s appreciable drop in animation quality with the Sloth scenes, it was good to see that the animation A team was back once again with this episode being spectacularly animated.

First of all, with respect to Hohenheim’s talking to his Philosopher Stone, this was a pretty interesting bent. We’ve been shown how the mass of souls completely overwhelmed Ling when he accepted Greed into his body. The fact that Hohenheim was able to talk to and convince every single one of the souls in his body to help him shows the true depth and compassion of his character. I’m kind of sorry that I originally wrote off the guy as a Gendo redux way back.

Another interesting fact is that since he has actually recruited the souls within him to help him, this does open up a way for the Elric brothers to truly reconcile with him, as they realize that he’s not using any souls in vain. It also opens up the possibility of Ling doing something similar as well with his Greed souls, although I’m sure they would be less willing to help him be a king rather than just go and kill Father.

What I do wonder is which one of the many souls volunteered to give their power for Hohenheim’s various usage of alchemy powers throughout the years. I mean fixing Izumi’s innards isn’t exactly directly getting revenge on Father. Perhaps Hohenheim is simply siphoning off a little bit of each soul instead of using them one at a time.

As for Father remaining ‘alive’ even with his flesh container destroyed, my theory goes out to the greater container’ that his Homunculus children have produced for him. Sloth dug a pretty huge circle for him, and as we could see how Pride could at the very least navigate the circle, it’s not inconceivable that Father could as well. Furthermore, the issue of using his Homunculus children as his Harry Potteresque horcruxes remains a potent possibility. It also appears that the population of ancient Xerxes is similar to that of the Early Egyptian kingdom (~550,000 x 2).

As for the fight, it was pretty incredible. Although I’m a bit leery at Bradley’s Matrixesque abilities (isn’t he just supposed to be a really skilled human with an all seeing eye?) which almost begin the breach the limits of what non-superpower characters should be able to do, it was none the less quite awesome to see just how powerful he is. Previously we’d only seen him fight peons and others who were able to somewhat match him, but considering how incredibly easy it was for him to defeat Buccaneer who is clearly better than almost everyone out there shows just how powerful he really is.

One last thing about this episode. When the grandfather guy first returns, my heart skipped a beat as I thought that RAN FAN had finally returned, but alas that is not so.

Next episode looks set up for grandfather’s death, and perhaps RAN FAN returning to defeat Bradley in revenge. At the very least RAN FAN must return!!!

P.S. Here’s a pic I took on vacation… I transmuted some humans and was thus summoned to the GATE OF TRUTH:

Nice pics, where did u go?

Theres sumthin I never understood with Father and the 7 sins. Where he creats them via the PS, it supposingly expels one of the sins out of him correct? e.g. by creating all 7, he’s basically without sin. HOwever we have seen him take back Greed (1st version-fluid philospher’s stone) and gluttony (after he died too many times), does this mean that during those moments, Father became more greedy and hungry ? HOw does this differ from when Pride consumed Gluttony.

Any theories?

The pic was taken at the Rodin museum in Paris.

As for Father, I don’t think that he is ‘without sin’ as much as ‘without that particular urge’ which each of the Homunculus represent. It is conceivable that when he reabsorbs the different Homunculus he does regain those qualities, or he can also quarantine each of those urges in a different part of his body thus they don’t really return to him.

well grandfather’s name is Fu just to tell you and he has his eye that lets him predict everything

his stone also gives him enhanced strength and speed as well

also how did you feel about the last two episode’s just some quick thoughts if you don’t mind (or just tell me how you felt about envy in his last moments will do for me)

plus because you di not reply to the first time i said this i have to post it again so Houmnculi death punishments

The Envious will have their corrupted Hearts riped out (if you view Envy’s stone as his heart it works)

The Indolent will be worked to death (Sloth’s job was to kill Oliver he was trying to do that and was killed as a result so he was technically worked to death)

Epi May 10, 2010 at 12:57 pm

How could I forget Fu’s name? Dang.

I thought the last two episodes were pretty long for not much plot. I mean the whole Envy dying thing was pretty pathetic for the little guy, and I can’t say I’m sad to see him go. While Roy wasn’t nearly as scary as Kate Blanchet’s Galadriel on being tempted by the Ring of Power, it was a decent scene. Envy really had it coming to him though.

I’m a bit confused… didn’t you say that envious would get their eyes burned out? How does the heart ripped out figure with it all?

Reply

clinton May 10, 2010 at 6:08 pm

its the death punishments for most of the sins there are two punishments a death punishment and a purgatory punishment

the riping of heart is the death one

for example gluttony’s purgatory punishment is to be force fed snakes whitch did not happen well unless you take into acount his eating of envy which was not on purpose and envy had turned his arm into a snake prior

And OMG!! The gate pic was soo like the Gate of Truth!!
You had a great time in your vacation it seems :)

Lets wait and see what happens ahead!Olivier would be pretty surprised seeing Mustang’s men putting a blame on her!
Btw where the heck is Al?? He’s totally out of the show :( Guess he and Pride will make a classic entry!

Thanks for that Kabitzin, i’ve also been quite curious on how you create a avatar but didn’t really want to just randomly ask out of nowhere.

No problem at all, thanks for reading and more importantly, thanks for commenting!

Epi May 10, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Aww thanks Fai! :)

I wonder whether the Olivier blame will be a contentious plot point, or if it will just be resolved in a split second kind of thing. I could see it go both ways. This series has had a way of letting cliffhanger type things be resolved very easily, but at the same time it tends to never drop important plot points. I just can’t see a ‘post-father-destruction’ battle between Olivier and Mustang eating up an episode though, so I figure it will be resolved rather easily.

While Al has been out of action, at least we saw a glimpse of him last episode. It’s RAN FAN who’s really missing!!

(As Rodin’s Gates of Hell is considered a masterpiece, I wouldn’t be surprised if the GATE OF TRUTH was based on it. The thing is even more awesome in real life though. Everything from the various babies trying to ‘escape’ from the door, to the fact that it’s 2-3x the height of a human, to all the other things going on in it… gotta see it to believe it)

Nice pictures, both gave me a good chuckle. If the building in the second pic sold mobile/cell phones it would be the icing on the cake, haha.

Pretty happy with this ep, the Xing flashback and radio-station scenes were padded out a bit but that actually suited the animes pace better. Also showing images of the various Xerxes people Hohenheim talks about was new to the anime and a great touch, made them feel more human and relates back to the ED.

Rather oddly the layout of central HQ was really altered in this ep. In the manga Wrath destroys the tank on an outside drawbridge while in the anime its a internal tunnel/lift entrance.

http://www.onemanga.com/Full_Metal_Alchemist/97/27/

Again, not complaining. Allowing the tank to retreat was a great move and showing him chase it up the passageway was a flat-out amazing sequence.

If I had any mild disappointment it was that the animation wasn’t as flat out intense as i’d hoped. I guess the last (very brief) encounter between Wrath and Greed set the bar a bit too high. However, the fights still ongoing and now we have fma’s greatest underused character Fu stepping up to the plate. Its about time he was given a chance to show his moves.

Reading the manga from your link, it looks like the anime was vastly better drawn and exciting. I’m glad that they spaced out the soldiers getting killed and the tunnel battle. Just made it that much more epic.

I also have a pic of the Paris Conservatoire which was extremely disappointing (it was like 1 house) but I later realized that Nodame’s school was actually on the other side of the city, this must have been a branch office or a similarly named institution or something.

Haha, I did something very similar a few years when I went to visit the Minoan ruins of the town of Palaikastro in Crete. I found ruins but only later realised I missed the main location by about half a mile – whoops! Of course my example has nothing to do with anime so its not particularly relevant to anything.

Speaking of which I haven’t got round to watching Nodame Cantabile. Would you recommend it?

zoon May 10, 2010 at 4:04 pm

given this show’s track record you know he’s not going to die

what about heuges :\?
I think 2 characters -atleast- will die in this arc, and one of them will be Hohenheim (i remember him saying “I will fellow Trisha” or something like that).
Good review as usual :)

Bradley shows off what enhanced speed and strength do for a dude that can every thing comming its funny all of the homunculi get the enhanced speed and strength too yet none are as good as Wrath’s (not including sloth who gets those powers too good) guess its because he was already really fast and strong due to his child hood training

The old man is named Fuu, not Ran Fan’s grandfather. He’s a great character too, and by focusing solely on Ran Fan, you’re not giving any other good character a chance.

I loved this episode. Everything they added just made it so much better. The fighting was awesome too. Great stuff. I wish we could have seen Father’s true form a bit more, but we’ll see it later.

Clinton May 10, 2010 at 7:36 pm

his name is Fu but he is ran fan’s grandfather then again you probbley already know that

Reply

Epi May 10, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Aye, Clinton already pointed out his name in comments further up. I usually try and look up people’s names (like Denny Brosh who returned a few episodes ago) but this time I just got lazy cause everyone calls him jii-san anyway.

Reply

Cornwiggle May 10, 2010 at 7:41 pm

… What was the point of that reply?

I know he’s Ran Fan’s grandfather, but that’s not his name. Epi is so obsessed about Ran Fan that he doesn’t care about anyone else’s name. My point was that he’s got a lot more going on that just being related to Ran Fan.

E-hem, Epi, the Gate in the first 2003 anime was indeed based on Rodin’s Gates of Hell. You can look it up.

The gates in the manga/brotherhood weren’t however. If you look at them closely you’ll also see that everyone’s gate has a different design and if you nose around some sites about alchemy you can easily find those designs.

But for all intents and purposes you were actually at the Gate of Truth from the first anime

Clinton May 10, 2010 at 8:49 pm

the first anime even had the evil black babies coming out of it that you talked about eariler

Reply

Epi May 10, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Ahh interesting. I don’t know too much about alchemy outside of FMA so I can’t comment, but I’ve always thought (since the first anime) that the gate looked like Rodin’s.
