Kaichou wa Maid-sama! 05

Zyl on May 4, 2010 · in Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

Ok, where do I get in line?

Summary:

A recent spate of incidents targeting the employees of cosplay cafes has put the staff of Maid Latte on edge and Satsuki even distributes a selection of self-defence equipment. Misaki says she doesn’t need one and demonstrates her Aikido skills during her punishment session for slacker Student Council members. Even the very strong Takumi is defeated when he plays stalker in a failed attempt to remind Misaki, who had been minding the shop alone, that she is still a girl and therefore vulnerable.

Misaki is left alone after hours again when Satsuki has to attend yet another association meeting. This time, despite remembering to lock the back door, Misaki is surprised by a pair of customers who had been staking her out. They handcuff and tape-gag her, saying that she is The One they have been searching for. Takumi is about to charge in to save her but a hugely pissed off Misaki breaks free and knocks them out on her own. Satsuki faints when she returns and sees the balcony glass door that Takumi broke. The next day the lesson that Misaki seems to have learnt is that she needs to be stronger still. But this narrative is immediately subverted by photos from last episode’s cute frilly pink dress taken by Honoka – which Aoi-chan obligingly sends to Takumi.

Reaction:

Some guys have all the luck

I was quite uncomfortable for much of this episode. First, I had assumed that the Moral of the Story would be to be Misaki to learn her lesson that she needs a man (i.e. Takumi) to protect her. Second, the way in which this was to be conveyed could have been seriously nasty given the whole setup with the threat of violence (especially the taser), the way she was restrained and the possibility of Something Really Bad happening if Takumi had not intervened. Given that Maid-sama! isn’t late night or pay TV anime, it was pretty much impossible anything really terrible would happen but still… this could have completely destroyed Misaki as a character.  I was *so* relieved that she didn’t really need Takumi’s help after all and what her two assailants really wanted was a good spanking. Ironically Misaki was indeed the perfect choice and they did get what they wanted and more, without even having to ask! That said, dere Misaki was great too.

The wider ecosystem of Maid Latte also really intrigued me. I wonder if the association is just for cosplay cafes or just a general trade association for the area. Also it seems that Satsuki is not just a hired manager but, given the depth of her involvement in the running of the business, could be the actual owner of the cafe.  Somehow the thought of her plowing through the management accounts’ trial balance sheet, profit/loss statement, income statement, equity position and detailed breakdown of operational/administrative expenses makes me even more moe for her.

You can do my account anytime, Satsuki-san

What Others Are Saying:

  • Kyokai has a wonderful set of animated gifs showcasing some of the best scenes of this episode such as Prepare to be punished I and II as well as Dere Misaki. Absolutely wonderful!!
  • Divine found Misaki “snapping handcuffs in a fit of rage is still pretty ridiculous” but I rationalize it as them using cheap plastic toy handcuffs as the real things are actually not that easy to get hold of (Don’t ask how I know~). I must also quote him for this marvellous turn of phrase about Takumi: “definitely a man out on a mission to protect the girl he loves (…to tease).”
  • SPIRAL reaps a bountiful harvest of comments for his comment on the Pearbook.

Next week Epi will return to the blogging of this series so please look forward to it!

Eclipse was brilliant with ‘Get ya guns on!’ but FFFpeeps’ choice of ‘spanking’ rather than the more literal ‘punishment’ was pretty sweet too.

And I just can’t resist Satsuki-san in general and S Meido Misaki in particular. :3

Haha, I was thinking the same thing every time Misaki mentioned handing out a few spankings. A few of those and Misaki’s popularity will dwarf that of the other maids!

And I’m also glad Misaki ultimately did not need Usui. Everyone gets a happy ending — Misaki kicks some ass, Usui gets a few lulz and the two stalkers get the spankings they desired.

I had assumed that the Moral of the Story would be to be Misaki to learn her lesson that she needs a man (i.e. Takumi) to protect her.

I thought that at first, but I think it’s more of a Misaki vs Men theme; she may be able to handle, overcome, challenge a lot of men, with the one exception being Usui… XD

ps. commenting is breaking for me

If you mean Ajax Edit Comments, I think I fixed the problem. I wish this functionality was part of the core, considering there are no plug-and-play alternatives and all updates to AEC require a paid membership now…

When I checked the right-aligned edit screen problem, I decided it looked really annoying to fix and didn’t want to pay for the newest version of the plugin. I deactivated the plugin and tried a substitute, but this would have involved making changes to the functions.php file to enable the plugin in the new (threaded) comments loop, which I am not very familiar with. I decided to just go back to AEC and fix the CSS or whatever was causing the stupid right-align problem, but when I reactivated the plugin, the bug was gone. I guess all I had to do was deactivate and then reactivate the plugin…

The edit screen is still slow, and I would switch in a heartbeat if there was a similar free alternative, but at least it seems to work now.

Thanks for the mention, I’m still in the process of getting into the groove of reviewing. :)
There were so many ways that this episode could have gone wrong but the turn of events were for the better thankfully! Enjoyed the Usui moments and it helped that most of it was outside school (damn those barf green uniforms)!

Barf green LOL – yes, Misaki’s school may charge low fees but it seriously needs a cuter uniform if it’s going to attract more bishoujos!

The uniform matches the proposed new Maid Latte mascot ;)

What I don’t understand is why Takumi broke the window. He clearly paused as Misaki broke the cuffs, and had the stones to (attempt to) interrupt her shounen speech with the window-kick The worst part was how after Misaki defeated those losers, they got off on the floor. Who is gonna clean up this mess?! Also, this episode demonstrated how having weapons is not enough without training in weapon use and weapon retention.

In this world of stalkers, counter-stalkers are the only ones keeping us safe.

They probably could have done a motion shot of Takumi already putting his foot in just before Misaki did her I Want To Break Free move.

Weapons retention – likewise for Maid Latte, providing the equipment isn’t enough, it needs training to use them effectively and safely. Maybe they should just get Misaki to teach the staff Aikido.

In the world of cosplay cafes, super regular customer already equals stalker!?

There is literally nothing about this anime that I dislike. Perfectly enjoyability rating from me. At this rate I’m giving this a top rating.

I love how she just snaps the handcuffs…..reminds me of Morpheus from The Matrix.
