Durarara!! 16

Damn muscle memory! I knew I should have done a practice booty call!

Summary:

How can you win? I have longer hair, better eyesight, larger breasts, longer legs, and a nicer school uniform.

The van door attack is successful, and Selty returns to Shinra believing that she has beaten the Slasher.  However, a quick glance at the knife’s timestamp and the emo chat log of Saika excuses convinces Shinra that the real Saika has gone around and possessed a lot of Slashers.  Apparently Saika is capable of loving all of humanity, and bears children by slashing new bodies.  Selty grabs Shizuo (who wears the bike helmet!) and they round up a bunch of Slashers at South Ikebukuro Park for a Matrix Reloaded showdown.  Selty is worried, but Shizuo is so pleased that he has so many fans (although technically he just has one fan…), that he decides to use his famed strength to the fullest.

Unfortunately, the mother Saika blade is at Anri’s apartment, as Haruna visits Anri in a jealous fit.  Haruna loved Takashi so much, but after using her for money and abandoning her, Takashi had the gall to refuse to become a Slasher.  When Takashi conveniently appears at the door to seduce Anri, Haruna sticks some Slasher zombies on Anri and goes after Takashi.  However, Anri is mysteriously able to escape and stop Haruna just in time.  It just so happens that Haruna didn’t run the recursion all the way to the base case, as Anri is in possession of the original Saika.

Reaction:

Ohohoho~ you're not the only one with a super-slutty sword!

How come when a male sword possesses a bunch of strangers it’s an awesome pimp-daddy sword, but when a female sword does it, it’s a skank-ho-bag?  BTW, did you know that Saika’s favorite kind of story is slash fiction?  I had suspected the Anri-Saika connection, with Anri’s blackouts and the match between when Anri’s parents died and when Saika was pawned off, but it looks like we will have to wait for a flashback to see how Anri came to possess Saika.  I knew Anri was hiding her strength, but I thought she’d be a gang leader; I guess she is actually more of a clan leader.  Anri is strong enough to tame Saika, but at the same time refers to herself as a parasite of Saika.  I wonder if Anri has to resist getting emotional in order to keep Saika under control.

Everyone’s been calling Anri a pinworm or other type of parasite for a while, but it was a little surprising to hear Anri agree.  I don’t quite understand why Saika didn’t talk to her daughters, but doesn’t that make Saika kind of a deadbeat mom?  It also sounded like Saika’s daughters are gradually getting better at communicating, and it won’t be long before those chat sessions give rise to deep intellectual and existential discussions.  I kinda liked Haruna and her snide jealous comments about how loli-Anri must have seduced the robbers to survive.  It should be interesting to see how mama-Saika grounds her rebellious teenage daughter-Saika and cancels her cell phone plan.  Don’t forget, Mother’s Day is coming up!

AYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The look on Takashi’s face when he opens the door and sees Haruna is priceless.

I loved it, especially since I can just imagine him thinking “Damnit, I thought I went to Anri’s place; all these busty underage schoolgirls look so similar I keep getting them mixed up!”

Great episode and I agree his expression was very funny should have been thinking “Sweet a slumber party, oh crap they got weapons!”

From Tom’s previous comments about taking Shizuo to collect a debt from a sex-offender teacher and Haruna’s comment about how Takashi tried to pimp her out (or maybe just scam her for cash), it sounds like Takashi owes money to some dangerous people. Still, who cares about that when you gotta seduce all your female students?

Where do all these people get their knives from?

Izaya probably has a tidy little sideline selling sharp pointy things to the possessed masses

It’s interesting that the other weapons turn back into normal knives when separated from their Slashers, but the true Saika does not. I wonder what would happen if Haruna lost her blade. The true nature of the possession confuses me, since I can’t tell how the people can be connected through cuts and yet be unable to communicate with Saika.

I wonder if the only ones able to talk to the mother blade are those actually spawned by the mother blade, and everyone else is tied to whoever stabbed them (creating inferior knock-offs, kinda like that fourth clone in Multiplicity). They kept making a big deal out of the fact that the actual Saika disappeared five years ago, so I’m thinking that it’s been one of the fractured children that has been doing all the slashing in the meantime and not Anri.

I thought the many Saikas could communicate through telepathy or something like that. But it appears they communicate to each other through the internet, like the bully student girl said (or I think she said). So, there’s, apparently, no way the original Saika could have known about her ‘younger daughter’s’ plan to ‘love’ all humanity, since Anhi doesn’t access the chat room (or I think she doesn’t access it).

Ah, btw, each children could have theirs own mind, but share the same objective

This is just a theory, but I like to think how the internet is being really helpfull to everyone in this anime.

The way I understood it, Anri somehow weakened her control over Saika recently and part of it escaped and took over Haruna, convincing herself that she is the original Saika and started spreading itself.
That Saika was the one the others were calling mother. So the real Saika probably knows nothing of all the daughters
I also think there’s a good chance Anri’s personality has merged with Saika’s by this point, so now it’s more of a symbiosis rather that parasitism

Reminds me of Spiderman and Venom, only hotter.

i was originally thinking of Anri-Queen Borg but taking it a step further Anri-Queen Zerg?

DarkFox May 4, 2010 at 10:51 am

yeah, I’m missing how Saika took control (parasitated, got into symbiosis, whatever) over Haruna. I hope this gets well explained on next episode. Can’t wait for it.

@Kabitzin
It can also reminds of Luke and Darth Vader
