Riza's hawkeye sees the horror of Mustang Moeblob

Summary:

Flashback to the end of the Ishbal war where Riza self-diagnoses PTSD and asks Roy to burn her father’s alchemy tattoo on her back so that no more flame alchemists will be created. In the present, Riza sees through Envy’s disguise and shoots him repeatedly but Envy quickly auditions her for a bit part in a tentacle raep anime. Roy will have none of it though and, with the power of BBQ and Attacking While Your Opponent Is Still Talking,  roasts Envy back to Green Slug state. Roy’s hate has made him powerful but, just before he can deliver the coup de grace, he brought back from the Dark Side by Edward’s (reflection of his youthful) idealism, Scarcasm D-X) and Riza guilt-trippin’ / booty call.

That's the way the Moeblob Stones go / Pop! goes the weasel

The final blow is actually dealt by Edward whose realization that Envy was jealous of humans is too much of a humiliation for the Homunculus; the already dying creature slips from Fullmetal grasp, plucks out its own Philosopher’s Stone, lays me down to take my rest, it’s just dust in the wind.

Back in Central, Sloth comes back online and more Suppository Soldiers arrive. But Olivier commandeers the troops trying to execute her death warrant by teaching them PvE survival tactics while Alex tanks Sloth. Just when the Men in Blue think that Sloth has bashed the Major into submission, he tricks Sloth into resetting his shoulder and quickly turns the tables with an upper cut, a barrage of hooks and another mouthful (right through to the back of his head) of  Armstrong Artistic Alchemy.

Talk? No, Mr Clemin, I expect you to die

Briggs’ single (non-WOW) tank distracts TACCOM long enough for Buccaneer’s team to breach the command centre with the help of Falman GPS and Izumi Tunnelling. Deep underground, Hohenheim reaches Father’s lair where the latter detaches his umbilical cables and proclaims that he will make the former’s body (part of) his.

Must smash in-btw animator who make woman general look Darlin' Darlin' FREEZE

Reaction:

I was actually pretty much with Envy (will miss him, such an arsehole!) re: how long will these pretty words last? Had initially thought that how everyone’s nagging would resonate with what Hughes had said and, thus reminded of his initial motivations, Roy would stop making his forehead prematurely wrinkled. But I was pleased as punch that, in the end, it was Riza who got him back and how he, more or less, confessed his love for her. Watch out, Black Hayate!

Alex’s Celebrity Deathmatch with Sloth was simply wonderful especially how he brilliantly aggro-ed Sloth into casting heal on him. I was also LOL with how Team Briggs had rigged up a tank in the Armstrong garage and managed to cause such chaos with just one. Which Clemins stupidly decided to counter with heavy artillery regardless of collateral damage – what’s wrong with these people? Don’t they have LAWs in this country?

What I’m not so chuffed about this episode is how bad some of the animation became (cf. Mustang Moeblob and > < Olivier examples above – click on them to enlarge). Even Sloth was embarrassed by his moeblob respawn (btw I love K-ON and Lucky Star but just not in my shounen please). Most of it was still decent to very good but, as the producers have maintained quality over this absolutely kickass arc, the bad parts simply stood out as egregious eyesores – to add insult to injury – of the two of this series’ coolest characters to boot! Hopefully we’ll see less, rather than more, of this as we enter the final approach. Or maybe it’s an incentive to get the DVD(rip).

P.S. In keeping with Epi’s SOP, no manga spoilers please.

Bit unfair, Zyls kind enough to take the time to do these writeups, you can’t have a pop because he has his own style of writing, especially if they reference a number of different animes. This is a general anime blog. And anyone who references K-on is A-ok in my book… even though that reference involves mustang and sloth. Now thats just weird

Hi clinton, thanks for your feedback. I enjoy reference humour but I also feel it should not make a post too difficult to read so will take this into account in the next post.

Heh thanks for missing me Clinton, but I won’t be writing another review for this as my good buddy Zyl has already! Sorry I was on vacation but thanks Zyl for continuing the reviews! =)

If only the Flame Alchemist class guide had been a tramp stamp on Riza… such a missed opportunity!

After watching Durarara, I keep expecting Sloth’s buddies to burst into bright colors.

Yeah you would have thought this being the centre of a military based country, a few LAWs would be the minimal amount of AT weaponry at their disposal.

Also I know what you mean about the moeblob style at times. The sloth jaw scene was the same in the manga (I didn’t like it then, I don’t like it now) so I can get past that plus I actually liked the mustang attack scene. I guess i’m happy if the animation moves at a frantic pace. I totally agree that the Olivier scene sucked though, that was just plain sloppy.

That last screencap makes it look like Sloth is playing with a bunch of dolls and holding two in his hand, lol.

Oh god, when I look at it now I see Sloth re-enacting the plot of resident evil with sock puppets. I’m gonna take a break from gaming now…

Zyl April 26, 2010 at 8:37 pm

CANNOT UNSEE

Sloth definitely needs to stop buying his figures from Sega/Bandai and stick to Kotobukiya, GSC and Alter!

Zyl April 26, 2010 at 8:35 pm

I just couldn’t resist the moeblob reference – even though the scenes with drops in quality had much more angular lines. It’s to the production team’s credit that the dips were so obvious only because the overall quality has been good and relatively consistent. Even in this episode, some of the in-between animation has been absolutely terrific e.g. Roy’s finger snappin’ for Cripsy Kentucky Fried Envy.

Gah, also realized I forgot to work in the Don’t Say (Sloth is) Lazy reference but I guess it’s already been too much of it. -_-);;

I lol’d at the shortcuts taken, too, but they didn’t bother me too much. Like fathomlessblue, I actually liked the Mustang scene, if only because of the frantic way he attacks Envy. It’s like if Chiaki from Nodame Cantabile were an alchemist, haha.

“just before he can deliver the coup de grace, he brought back from the Dark Side by Edward’s (reflection of his youthful) idealism, Scarcasm D-X) and Riza guilt-trippin’ / booty call.”

No, the truth is, I’m a mini-con.

Some of that in-between animation is… wow xD W-what happened to Olivier in that last screencap? ;w;

Not going to happen. Lust, Hawkeye, etc….what do they all have in common? That’s right, they’re all older than 12.

No, the only one for me is the person in the big metal suit. I’m convinced there’s a loli tsundere in there somewhere….

Don’t be deceived by the KugiRie alchemy! And what about May Fang? =_=);;

Ben April 27, 2010 at 4:24 pm

I don’t understand… Envy is the one who started the Ishbal war, killed Hughes, insults humanity daily, and on top of that is just plain creepy and no one wants Mustang to kill him. WTF? If they didn’t want Mustang to kill Envy, then why did they let him burn the guy for twenty minutes straight?

Narkins April 27, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Silly ben, if they did that we’d miss Mustang doing what Mustang does best. Flamespam and feck loads of it.

On other notes Armstrong is one of my favourite characters in any media period hes such a prime piece of LARGE HAM you just can’t dislike him. When I first read the manga years ago his fight against scar had me hooked and I loved the fact the mangaka brought him back here to give us the brilliance of the fight against Sloth. Many would have just left him as a side character.

Cornwiggle April 29, 2010 at 3:59 pm

They let him burn him because they didn’t know at the time how absolutely consumed he really was with vengeance. Notice how when he started Ed remains weary that he’ll go to far, and eventually as it keeps up Hawkeye does too.

And if Mustang would have been consumed by his wrath to kill Envy, he would be just ruled be his vengeance, a man who can be overcome if someone pushes his buttons too far. His goal is to become leader of the country; there’s no way he can be so easily angered if it’s to be strong.

Besides, Hawkeye said it best “What you’re doing now is not for the good of your comrades or your country. It’s just to satisfy your own vengeance.”
