Summary:
It’s time to fill in the Life After High School form but Akko is preoccupied with the interwebs. Specifically searching for “How two girls have sex” to make up for a lack of experience. She quickly hits the Boss key when Mari calls up; the latter is asking to bring Mayu over for a cosmetics training session. Akko agrees to prevent them from spending more time together alone but quickly gets absorbed in the task like a professional. Mayu says she will have more confidence to face her senpai at the upcoming club meeting which clears up the misunderstanding between Mari and Akko.
Mayu thanks them and leaves but not before declaring herself a fan of Akko. Alone together, Mari confesses of being jealous at how Akko was able to share personal details with Mayu and how it reminded her of how Akko had first gotten close to her. A kiss leads to increasingly steamy stuff as Akko attempts sexual intimacy but Mari’s protestation of being not (emotionally) ready makes Akko back off with the misunderstanding that they had not gotten ready (in terms of proper steps to follow). Later Akko looks up courses on hair and makeup artistry.

Well, the first misunderstanding got cleared up pretty quickly and with a minimum of emo or fuss. The second misunderstanding is completely contrived and required a whole additional page of translator’s notes. I’d dearly like to see how well this works in the original Japanese but given how it was premised on Mari and Akko’s lack of experience and much doki doki inability to think clearly in the heat of the wonder, I’m not inclined to let this bother me too much. LOL moment when Taguchi had guessed correctly wrt Akko’s NSFW surfing though it leads me on to reminisce about how teenagers found out about all the gory details of the birds and the bees in the ancient times before the internet was widely available.
I suppose it’s a question of when rather than if they will become sexually intimate so I’m looking forward to how this latest obstacle is overcome; another one that’s already been flagged is how Mari and Akko having to reconcile their very different further education and career choices. We already know from Morinaga Milk-sensei’s other works, such as the Nana x Hitomi story When The Ring Finger Is Kissed, that this does happen in her stories; however the format of Girl Friends allows things to be developed in greater detail and at a more languid pace so it might be quite a few chapters away still. Speaking of pace, the manga is going on hiatus unlike May and I hope it’s not because of another bout of ill health.

The cuteness and sweetness is lovely of course but I always like how it is interlaced with a trace of bitter… like milk chocolate with some dark.
