Durarara!! 12 12 01

Hey Seiji, why's this door locked? Are you fapping? You're fapping right? Hey it's cool, I've seen you do it before. Ok, I'll just let myself in and give you a hand.

Summary:

Durarara!! 12 12 02

Is there a more dangerous motorcyclist than Selty?

Selty body-blocks Seiji’s stab, but then Melty body-blocks Selty’s scythe slice.  Melty reveals that she’s really just Mika with some plastic surgery; she had gotten her head slammed against the wall repeatedly, but she had survived the attack.  Namie offered the surgery to please Seiji, and Shinra was called in to do the work.  Selty is very angry about this, but Shinra explains he did it for love.  He was always afraid that Selty would leave (either intentionally or unintentionally) if she got the head back.  Selty explains she was afraid that her mortality was linked to her head and she didn’t want her death to be in someone else’s hands.

With that done, most of the characters go back to their normal lives.  Seiji and Mika return to class, Mikado kicks Masaomi away so he can get a lunch date with Anri, and Selty feels fulfilled just going through a generic day.  However, Namie’s now hiding with Izaya and it seems he’s in possession of Selty’s head.  Izaya offers Namie membership and mentions that he was the one who picked up the Dollars recruitment effort.  Furthermore, he believes that Selty’s head is simply sleeping until there is a big battle, at which time she will awaken as a Valkyrie to guide heroes to Valhalla.

Alright, this one is going to be a strike for sure

This episode mostly just confirmed a number of theories, such as the identities of the chat room participants, the fact that Melty is really just Mika, and the origin of the Dollars name coming from “dala dala” or “lazing around.”  Although not much explicitly happened, I did find a lot of ironic and subtle humor in this episode.  I loved how Izaya taunted Seiji for being unable to differentiate between Selty and Mika, like how people can’t tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi.  Mika herself was hilariously genki-annoying, and she is definitely the perfect match for Seiji.  I love how Mika’s speedy blabbering got her head slammed into the wall and yet she was still cool with the whole situation.  The fact that Seiji was willing to settle for Mika until he finds Selty was also humorous, as is the possibility of Selty getting her head back and immediately dumping Shinra.

Underneath, however, things are clearly moving quickly.  I get the feeling that both Mikado and Anri are more sinister than they appear.  Mikado clearly wanted to stab Izaya, and I think he might know that Izaya is the subversive evil element within the Dollars.  A lot of the characters are better understood through their connections with other characters, and sweet secretive Anri is almost certainly going to be revealed as a crazy psycho-bitch killer.  I’m really not sure why Anri hung out with Mika, though, and I’m a little unsure about my theory that Anri and Mika are also gangsters.  Mika really didn’t seem like she belonged to any real gang, and she just came off as a weird annoying girl.  And just to bring up a sore subject, if Seiji was in True Tears, he totally would have slammed Noe’s head into the wall.

I’m normally not into shipping wars, but I cannot think of a recent ship I’ve wanted to see sink so badly than Shinra x Selty. Everything about Shinra pisses me off now. He’s that smooth-talking a-hole everyone knows who somehow gets the girl, even though he is a huge prick. Laaaaaaaaaaaame.

The funniest part of this episode for me is Mikado’s speech when Mika is trying to get her love on with Seiji. It’s just so lame, corny and dumb that I can’t think of it as anything but ironic, like it’s Mikado trying to play a part with which his is totally unfamiliar (which would play into your theory that Mikado is much more sinister than he initially appears).

Also, I for one am ready for psycho-bitch Anri. Bring her on, I say!

I loved Mikado getting stuck there with Seiji and Mika! I’m betting that now that Seiji has to settle for being Mika’s official boyfriend, he’s going to force Mika to get some more surgery to match Selty’s body as well. Namie’s gonna love that.

I didn’t understand the Shinra-Selty punch transaction. If Selty owed Shinra a punch, and then punched him, why does Shinra get to punch her afterwards? And have you noticed that love results in brutal violence each time so far in this show? Did the author just go through a bad breakup or something?

Be careful for what you wish for. Anri has surprises, definitely… The revelations sure surprised me, that’s for sure!

I guess the last two episodes completely disproved all my theories about this show and confirmed all of yours Kabi-tan. Well played sir, well played.

I was totally waiting for Izaya to make out with Selty’s head there at the end.

Also need to see Anri psycho with a bat. That would be rad.

I’m assuming that Anri has a kitchen knife, like in that puppet show in Mikado’s mind. It’d be funny if she tried to stab him and then accidentally set his house on fire, but I’m not sure how that would work, considering that Mikado barely owns anything.

Izaya was treating Selty’s head more like a ball than anything else. Besides, every fangirl knows that Izaya’s lips are reserved for Shizuo.

The funny thing is, SELTY sometimes thinks of Izaya x Shizuo manlove… then promptly gets sick of the thought.

Melty is a pretty accurate name, Mika’s constant jabbering in the flashback was destroying my brain!

Also that scene with Celty on the bike, outstreching her arms with the celtic-ish music in the background probably would have been much far more effective if i could get the similar scene from Titannic out of my head… just replace the bike for DiCapprio

You didn’t like Mika’s jibber-jabber? I loved it since it felt like the perfect punishment for Seiji.

Her voice is perfect, its just what I imagine it would be!! Enough to drive you insane, yet natural.

Darknile March 29, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Yep, Mika & Seiji make the perfect psycho freaks couple. And I agree with Shinmaru on that relationship should shipwreck… I mean Shinra dude, wtf shouldn’t you have at least told Celty you saw her freakin’ head? Well, when is the scene gonna happen where we see Shinra & Celty waking up in the same bed together? Although its kinda crappy not being able to kiss and make out with Celty without her head around.

Ah, I don’t want Celty to stop searching for her other 1/4 just cos she’s happy with her current lifestyle. At least Mikado has 1 supernatural member in his online gangbanger club.

Lol, I’m glad you found humor in Izaya’s awsome observation of Seiji and his “LUV”for Celty’s fake head.

It’s gonna be hilarious when Selty gets her head back and finds that the neko-mimi helmet is too small.

I just couldn’t believe the device she used just to open the door. That’s pretty scary.

Darknile March 29, 2010 at 11:45 pm

Mika’s got locksmith skills. I mean where did she get a lock picking kit from in the first place? Do they like sell these at the local convenience stores late at night just in case some poor Joe or Jenny locks themselves out of their house?

I like that part where she says, “I looked at you (Seiji) and you smiled at me…” when all he did was look at her with his dead fish eyes and lipless mouth.

Rakuen March 29, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Um, I think I actually have seen a more dangerous cyclist than Celty. I’ve seen a guy ride with no handlebars on the Interstate. He passed us going about 70 MPH.

Naturally we all started singing the Flobots song, rather than worry about how this guy could hit us with a motorcycle.

Darknile March 29, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Well I’ll go with Kabi’s official name of Horsecycle by Harley Davidson. Since its a horse in motorcycle skin I was worried Celty would accidently end up like Christopher Reeds riding accident. That would have been pretty messed up but Shinra would be able to be Celty’s own personal doctor for life.

since its revealed in this ep who is in the chatroom, I can now say that the chatroom trio is part of dollars
interesting to note that the manipulator, the leader and the fairy of dollars are the chatroom trio and they dont know each other(except for izaya).
for those who want to SPOIL themselves

remember I said SPOIL so its obviously spoilers but may now happen in the anime since it seems to cover vol 1-3 for now.

I really enjoyed Mika and her total disregard for private space, her happy chatter as she forced her way into his apartment cracked me up. I also found Mikado’s assessment of the situation hilarious; as much as he wants a connection with others, his own connection to reality seems rather tenuous. And though it was fun seeing everyone in class, I would think that Mika and Seiji probably already exceeded the acceptable number of absences per school year, so I’m not sure what they’re gaining in going back.

Also, though Selty makes a good effort, I think Titanic ruined that pose forever. Tell me you didn’t hear “I’m the king of the world!” just then.

Mika was definitely fun to see in this even if she was hyper obsessed ! nice informative episode but I dunno who’s more creepy Mika? or Seiji lol

Reply

Darknile April 2, 2010 at 7:22 pm

I’d say Seiji is probably more dangerous and creepy since he would actually hurt others. Mika may be a nut for carrying around a lockpicking kit in but I doubt she’ll pull a hand to strike someone. I’ll take hyper-obsessive over a violent psycho any day.
