Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 43 FMA2 43 01

Wait for it... Wait for it...

Summary:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 43 FMA2 43 02

Riza takes some 'alone time' after pleasing the Fuhrer

Proving themselves to be quite incompetent, the Dracha army doesn’t even manage to dent the Briggs Wall with giant cannons as they are completely slaughtered by the Briggs army mulling around at the top of the wall. With that the blood crest has been cast and Father’s alchemy circle complete.

Meanwhile, back at Bradley’s office, the king asks Riza what she thinks of having a Homunculus run the country. He goes on to further tell her that apparently the only thing which he ever choose for himself was his wife and that everything else was set.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 43 FMA2 43 03

Marcoh gets Evny's special full-body tongue job

Back up north, following the phone call from the end of the previous episode, Zampano leads Envy to where everyone is hiding. As Envy is surprises Dr. Marcoh, Marcoh has a surprise of his own, as the entire Zampano betrayal was actually just a rouse to kill the lovable Homunculus. With the power of eastern alchemy, Envy is pounded with ice but he is not so easily defeated. Even Scar’s alchemy is no match for Envy as he proves to be invulnerable to all attacks. As he captures Dr. Marcoh with his tongue, he reveals to Marcoh that all of his former subordinates have now been turned into Philosopher’s Stones themselves. This proves to be the final straw for Marcoh as he reveals that as the most knowledgeable Philosopher’s Stone creator in the country he also knows how to destroy the stones, and promptly goes about deconstructing Envy.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 43 FMA2 43 05

But but... how will he breathe?!

With one final emo face distortion, Evny disintegrates, leaving behind a small green multi-legged worm type creature, apparently Envy’s true and original form. Following some hijinks with Yoki, Evny is finally bottled up and Scar tells May Chang to take Evny along with her back to Xing and worry about her own people instead of the affairs of another country. As they send a 8 year old girl away alone into the deep cold, Scar and Dr. Marcoh set off on a journey of their own to create some change you can believe in. Meanwhile Al, Winry and the rest decide to head off to Lior, as Al is itching for some hot Rose action, oh and apparently the tunnel goes there too where they bump into none other than Hoenheim being a total goof.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 43 FMA2 43 07

No, we're really not trying to cash in on the recent vampire craze

The episode ends with some bickering between Olivier and Alex Louis Armstrong, which ends when one of the top brass of the conspiracy finally shows Olivier what she’s signed up for… the Eva production series the immortal army ready to do battle with Gendo Hoenheim.

Reaction:

Overall this was a great episode. The Envy battle was pretty fun, although I would have liked to see more alchemy usage (i.e. Al showing his skills) before the final defeat. There’s a few things of note in this episode that I’d like to discuss.

First of all, we get Bradley’s offhand comment to Riza about the fact that his wife is the only thing that he’s ever chose. I wonder if this will end up being an important plot point later on. We must remember that unlike say Envy, Bradley did start off as a human after all. If he actually did care about his human wife, perhaps the threat of Father disintegrating her to create more Philosopher’s Stones would be something that would change Father’s mind and make him part of the ‘resistance’ himself. Maybe not.

Secondly, we get a bit of fun bantering between Alex Louis and Olivier. One wonders how much of this was an act, and how much of it was Olivier’s true disgust at Alex Louis’ cowardice even if she now knows the TRUE reason behind that war.

Thirdly, we get to see the immortal army for the first time. One wonders whether or not this is really just a clever rouse by Father to get the generals to be complacent to his demands. I mean do the generals really know that the ENTIRE COUNTRY is going to be turned into Philosopher’s Stones? Likely not. What’s the point of having an army that is more powerful than you (i.e. could revolt against you easily) and have an empty country to boot? The generals likely think only a limited amount of people will die or that all the requisite people have already died (making the blood crests). This puts into the question, is this so called immortal army merely just a huge rouse? Are those hanging bodies really going to turn ‘alive’ at some point, or are they really just empty shells which are never meant to be anything more?

Surely if we are to actually get these bodies to be ‘alive’, then some form of human transmutation needs to take place, which sort of explains why Father needs Ed, Al, Izumi and Hoenheim to be sacrifices. But I have a feeling that the entire ‘army’ is just fake and that the generals will all be in for a rude awakening sooner or later. Still if the army is actually ‘real’, perhaps much like the Eva Production Series, they will be even more powerful than the original Homunculus, setting the stage for some even more awesome battles to come.

Finally we get to the issue of the Homunculus themselves. With Evny’s Philosopher Stone being deconstructed by Dr. Marcoh, we get to see Envy’s original form. While Lust never got such a luxury (she was just completely burnt up) and Gluttony just turned into a more tiny version of himself I wonder what of the others? We know that Greed is currently Ling who got turned to look like Greed. Similarly Evny’s worm thing was turned as well. King Bradley meanwhile looks exactly as he’s always looked even after the introduction of the stone to his human body. I wonder what Pride’s original form was and same with Sloth. I also wonder why some Homunculus change shapes and others don’t. And finally I wonder why Envy is able to survive as a worm enclosed in a jar with limited air and no food. Is this as Scar claims some immortal permanent form of a powerless Homunculus, and if so why didn’t Lust survive? The one final thing is, why is it that Envy in worm-form retains his personality, while we’d assume that if Ling ever goes back to being Ling he will be himself and NOT greed? Perhaps Envy really was completely created after all, and not originally a worm given powers?

So many questions… so few answers.

the homunculi are pretty much as you see them. granted, most have abilitities that changes their form, i.e. greeds armour or prides shadow but they’re part of their original design. others like lust don’t seem to change an awful lot while bradley’s homuncli spirit is contained with a human vessel. the scene with gluttony growing from fathers body was supposed to represent his foetal stage of development so by the time you see him next he should be full sized and separate from daddio.

in envy’s case the worm (in the manga its looks more like a rip-off of the adam embryo from evangelion) is his true form with one soul keeping his body and personality alive so the remainder of a philosphers stone must exist within him. he can die but for whatever reason marcoh couldn’t or wouldn’t destroy the very last soul (probably just blind luck on envy’s part). it explains alot about his name and why he doesn’t like being looked down on; literally as well as figuratively. he seems to compensate for this by using the energy from multiple souls in a philiosphers stone to bolster up his mass into his big dragony form although this doesn’t seem to mesh perfectly, hence the original forms of numerous soul attempting to crawl out of his unified body. thats how i interpreted it. its interesting to note though that he tries to take over yoki in this episode by merging with his nervous system, so its possible that he actually absorb flesh to increase size or can use a combination of both body and soul. its never really explained so is left for the fans to discuss.

im curious about the whole bradley scene as his tales yet to fully play out so i wont give anything away. i heard someone suggest it could be a physcological tactic against hawkeye but i don’t think so. we’ve already seen him be mildly scolded by pride for admiring the human spirit to fight back. however; whether this is some perverse guilty pleasure thats left over from his human side or if he genuinely feels these emotions possibly won’t be ever fully explained. personally i’d like to think that he truly loves his wife. from the moment i saw his backstory explained to roy i felt bradley could well be the most tragic figure in fma. whether his human emotions are simply eclipsed by his homunculus side or whether its its a weakness of spirit to recognise the significance of his own desires over duty. bradley was born into a life seemingly without choices and im not sure he would even know how to rebel against this fact even though theres hints hes bitter about it. guess time will tell.

Wow I need to make my posts longer cause my commenters are taking over ;)

I agree with your assessment of Envy, I am just not so sure about the nature of the worm. Is the worm a pure Homunculus, or is it just the dude that got changed into a Homunculus (like Ling or Bradley). And if it’s the dude that got changed into a Homunculus, why did his personality not change? Which leads me to think that he really is a pure Homunculus whatever that means.

ha ha, yeah epi, brevity isn’t my strongest point

i think the truest defination of a homunculi is simply an aspect of fathers emotions/soul contained within a philosphers stone. even with many other souls in the stone its the homunculi soul/personality thats dominent. its the personality not the appearance thats important. father seems to be able to build a form from his own flesh or can take the stone out and inject it into a person. therefore lust/sloth/envy etc could have just as easily been injected into a human while wrath could have been given an artifical form. im not sure whether original greed was a human but i dont think so as he had that wierd black body hugging outfit with lines and circles around which envy/sloth/lust/gluttony have. such as here:

http://www.onemanga.com/Full_Metal_Alchemist/27/18/

you could argue that its a type of clothing that non-disguised homunculi wear but i doubt it as the design covers most sloths head and is a part of lusts spears.

the big question is whether father can choose the form of an homunculi or whether its a fixed form he has no control over. even though he can experiment with an homunculus such as infusing a fake gate of truth within gluttony i think its the probably latter. i mean given the choice why would you want envy as a foetus/worm? the personility/sin reflects the form i guess. i’ll shut up now!

clinton February 10, 2010 at 1:46 pm

he is just a homunculus he was made like that if you look at both of his forms they look alike the worm looks like the beast just with out all the soul making up the body and making it large and powerful. also that form is a fail safe in case his body is destroyed also Envy can still posses people meaning he is still deadly

clinton February 9, 2010 at 3:49 pm

I think its a really bad idea to send Envy to xing to give the the ruler the secret to immorality look at episode 40 little thing in flask talks to king about the secret to immortality now Envy is a little thing inside a jar going to talk the emperor about the secret to immortality we all know how turned out xerves Envy knows what father did and how he did it if he is given to the king it could be very bad

Yeah, not sure why they sent Envy away with May Chang to Xing… like what does that accomplish, aside for having her come back at the last moment with RAN FAN.

Reply

clinton February 10, 2010 at 1:42 pm

easy he was immortal and he knows how to make people immortal my main point was how he could turn xing in to a repeat of xerves if he did he would be more powerful then father

Epi February 11, 2010 at 3:10 am

You took me too literally. I mean I agree that sending Envy is a mistake because now he’s going to screw up Xing… but in the context of this story, what it likely really means is that Envy is proof that Marcoh has a way to defeat the Homunculus and leave behind the ‘original’ piece, meaning RAN FAN will return to free Ling.

clinton February 9, 2010 at 4:02 pm

also i really think that Ed should have fought Envy there they always seemed like rivals to me (plus Envy kick his ass the last time they fought so Ed deserves revenge)

also its a good thing that Marcoh knows how to 1 hit Homunculi if he did not their group would have been dead. and last thing when the Drachma beard dude was killed he talked to Kimblee who mocked him saying that he was a idiot for believing him about the people in the base but also said he was lucky and that the world has chosen them because no mortars hit them. Beard guy then trys to attack kimblee he is rewarded by getting hit by a mortar. while Kimblee stands their looking badass and laughs

Interesting point about the homunculi and their forms. Some of them have hidden “true” forms while others don’t. I think they are just all different and they are not really that similar to one another.

Oh man! The anime series is catching up to the manga really fast!! Will it be this time too (like Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 series) that they will give an ending different from the manga?? Or is the manga gonna end soon!! Well anyways overall pretty good episode this was…I had a doubt….that as Father created Gluttony again..why didnt he create Lust?? If he has powers of reincarnating as many homunculus as he desires..then he must be virtually unstoppable!! Anyways, now we’ll surely get to see Ling in a few episodes..he disappeared for long enough!!! lol

I don’t think that Gluttony was ever dead. Father took out his mini-form from the big body and then he used more of his own Philosopher’s Stone power to recharge Gluttony.

Reply

clinton February 10, 2010 at 1:40 pm

no he never took out the mini form he just took out his stone gluttony just came out of his body in a mini form

aenima February 9, 2010 at 10:30 pm

umm homunculi do not have weakened states, the little gluttony had been consumed by father and “rechraged” and the reason envy is son small is that he is parasite-like because well-he represents envy. wrath and greed 2 are homunculi-ed human bodies that in theory should had lose their personalities and do not regenerate but they can age unlike the orher homunculi so even though your theory is interesting it isnt anything like that each homunculi is liek a totally different life form and noo sorry but homunculi only seem to come back when father absorbs them so we will never see lust again :(

Jack February 10, 2010 at 8:37 pm

As far as my understanding goes…Homumculi die if their stone is completely destroyed, but they can “die” and their stone not be destroyed yet, it just doesn’t have any regenerative power left in it. So like with Gluttony, he was dead, but his stone was still there, just out of energy. So Father recharged him. Why on the other hand Lust’s stone was completely destroyed. And the personality is in that specific part of energy and collection of souls that Father takes from his body, so he could never make a whole new stone for a new homunculi whose stone was destroyed. But he can melt it down and reabsorb the stone, and then reuse it to make a new humonculi when he sees fit, like he did with Ling turning into Greed (I’ll never understand why he felt the need to bring Greed back though)

And with the homunculi forms. I think certain ones made from Fathers body (Lust, Gluttony, Greed.1, and Envy) can have different powers and properties to them somewhat according to their personality (gluttony eats everything, lust pierces through men’s hearts, envy changes form because he’s envious of others) and they all have a concealed form, but their true form is either just sort of something to do with Father’s experimentation of them or it’s representative of something about them. Envy is a parasite, who doesn’t want to be looked down on, and all these others things that have to do with his envious nature.
And I’m not sure if Lust and Greed would have ‘true forms’ or not. I think maybe only some homunculi do, and others don’t, and it’s kinda random with a reason. As for Greedling and Wrath, they were humans injected with stones, so they could age (in Wrath’s case to play his part) and with Pride, he’s sort of a special case, and being the first homunculi took the form of Father as he originally was.

Reply

fathomlessblue February 10, 2010 at 11:38 pm

im mostly in agreement with you but i think there are differences between wrath and greedling. wrath has specifically one soul in his stone which acts pretty much like a human soul (physically speaking) so that he ages, can only die once and has no particular powers beyond sheer skill. greeds stone had multiple souls within like the rest of the homunculi so even when injected within a human (ling) can make them invincible till the souls all are destroyed, unaging and granted the homunculi’s special powers (such as greedling being able to use his carbon claws against ed within fathers lair). its the multiple souls in the stone that seems to give even humans homunculi powers and immortality. otherwise ling wouldnt have so readily merged with greed if he wasnt getting what he desired in return.

as for father bringing greed back, as more people where rebelling against him more help was needed to contain them. greed was under fathers command for years before he deserted so by wiping his memories, so said father wouldnt expect him do the same before his big plans came into fruition, which is pretty soon.

Epi February 11, 2010 at 3:11 am

Wrath has a lot of souls, in the episode where he thinks back to when he was ‘created’ he does mention that there are lots of souls within him.

clinton February 11, 2010 at 8:21 pm

but he said that after the constent struggle for his soul all that was left was one soul and wrath still has the eye that allows him to see everything

Hohenheim= Gendo?!

What the fuck?

Are you crazy? Hohenheim isn’t a complete dick and a cliche right off the stamp machine.

If you really know Hohenheim’s personality, he is not Gendo whatsoever. The anime did make him a bit cold in episode 20, but that was resolved with his personal conflict in episode 27. He was uptight. Read that chapter of manga at the grave. He’s very softspoken and mild, just like how he is every other time.
