Avatar Impressions

by Epi on December 29, 2009 in Other Series,Reviews

Well not anime related, but thought I’d talk about it anyway just cause I feel like it. Just saw Avatar in IMAX 3D tonight, and I have to say, it was pretty amazing. The special effects were out of this world. The showing of mecha in every which awesome way (totally kicked the Matrix sequels ass) only makes me wish for live action Gundam all that more. The story was of course:

One thing to note is that the special effects were created by WETA (Peter Jackson’s company that he used to make LOTR) and of course, WETA was SUPPOSED to be doing that rumoured live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion. Considering the incredible effects in this movie, I have no doubt that they can do it and that brain syncing scene in the movie really made me think… damn Eva. But hey I”d settle for some Gundam as well! One can only dream…

I’d give it a 10/10 for awesome groundbreakingness but drops down to a 9-9.5 for generic plot.

P.S. FMA 38 coming up tomorrow… it’s late I need sleep.

As a huge fan of all things mecha, high school and tsundere, I've been writing for SSAB! since the summer of 2009, although my love of anime spreads through all genres. I'm not as witty as some, but I aim to bring comprehensive and well-written anime reviews out there for you all out there to enjoy!

You forgot the “planetary neural network”/Planetmind schtik lifted straight out of Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri
And mindworms are a much coaler macroscale immune system, too. =3=

Fair enough, I guess.
Masses of brain-munching psychic invertebrates still beat angry forest wildlife though.

The story was super generic and typical. Basically Dances with Wolves/The Last Samurai meets space commandos. The special effects are worth the price of admission alone though.

Did the IMAX 3D enhance the movie?

I didn’t see the non-IMAX, but generally anytime you have a screen 6-stories high it’s just awesome :)

Pocahontas.

3D glasses were annoying. – A gimmick that only worked in some parts of the movie IMHO.

Otherwise, awesome~.

I actually saw regular and then IMAX, and I can’t say IMAX was much better. I only noticed the 3D in a couple scenes. Basically any scene with heavy cg (which is about 95% of the film) highly muted the 3D effects.

I’d have to disagree with you here… I kept taking off my glasses to check and it was extremely noticeable that there was a lack of 3d without the glasses on… it was easy to just ‘get used to’ the 3d so that you didn’t really notice it.

Movie gets points for sheer visual spectacle, but the plot is a ghastly hodgepodge of the most tired Mighty Whitey/Noble Savage clichés ever and not particularly helped by several pretty conspicious brain farts in the script. Paper-thin characters are another demerit.

It occurs to me that somehow turning off the voice track would probably have approximately doubled the movie’s entertainment factor…
